The Roof of the Opera House

(Scene 10)

A statue of 'La Victorie Ailee' stands center stage-the same as that which tops the proscenium. It is twilight. Christine and Raoul rush on.

Harry sang, "Why have you brought us here?"

Hermione answered, "Don't take me back there!"

Harry sang, "We must return!"

Hermione sang, growing more and more hysterical as she sings each line. "He'll kill me!"

Harry sang, "Be still now…"

Hermione sang, "His eyes will find me there!"

Harry sang, comforting, "Christine don't say that…"

Hermione sang, "Those eyes that burn!"

Harry sang, "Don't even think it…"

Hermione sang, "And if he has to kill a thousand men…"

Harry sang, "Forget this waking nightmare…"

Hermione sang, "The Phantom of the Opera will kill…"

Harry sang, "The Phantom is a fable…Believe me…"

Hermione sang, "…and kill again!"

Harry sang, "There is no Phantom of the Opera…"

Hermione sang, "My God, who is this man…"

Harry sang in answer, "My God, who is this man…"

Hermione finished, "…who hunts to kill…?"

Harry finished soon after. "…this mask of death…?"

Hermione sang, "I can't escape from him…

Harry sang, "Whose is this voice you hear…"

Hermione sang, "…I never will!"

Harry sang, "…with every breath…?"

Both of them sang, "And in this labyrinth, where night is blind! The Phantom of the Opera is here: inside your/my mind…"

Harry sang, grasping Hermione's shoulders and looking her in the eye. "There is no Phantom of the Opera…"

Hermione sang frightened and turned away, "Raoul, I've been there- to his world of unending night…To a world where the daylight dissolves into darkness…darkness…Raoul, I've seen him! Can I ever forget that sight? Can I ever escape form that face? So distorted, deformed, it was hardly a face, in that darkness…darkness…" Her voice became trancelike then grew more ecstatic. "But his voice filled my spirit with a strange sweet sound…In that night there was music in my mind…And through music my soul began to soar! And I heard as I'd never heard before…"

Harry sang, "What you heard was a dream and nothing more…"

Hermione continued, "Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world…Those pleading eyes which both threaten and adore…"

Harry sang, putting a comforting arm around Hermione. "Christine…Christine…"

Draco who is unseen by Raoul and Christine sang in a ghostly echo of Harry's words. "Christine…"

Hermione whispered, "What was that?"

A moment, as Harry and Hermione's eyes meet. The mood changes.

Harry sang, "No more talk of darkness. Forget these wide-eyed fears. I'm here, nothing can harm you- my words will warm and calm you. Let me be you freedom, let daylight dry your tears. I'm here with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you…"

Hermione answered, "Say you love me every waking moment, turn my head with talk of summertime…Say you need me with you now and always…promise me that all you say is true-that's all I ask of you…"

Harry sang, "Let me be your shelter, let me be your light. You're safe: No one will find you. Your fears are far behind you…"

Hermione sang, "All I want is freedom, a world with no more night…and you always beside to hold me and to hide me…"

Harry sang, "Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime…let me lead you from your solitude…Say you need me with you here, beside you…anywhere you go, let me go too- Christine that's all I ask of you…"

Hermione sang, "Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime…say the owrd and I will follow you…"

Both sang looking at each other lovingly. "Share each day with me, each night, each morning…"

Hermione sang, "Say you love me…"

Harry answered, "You know I do…"

Both sang, "Love me-that's all I ask of you…"

The music swells into its climax and Harry and Hermione kiss.

Both sang, "Anywhere you go let me go too…Love me- that's all I ask of you…"

Christine starts from her reverie.

Hermione sang, "I must go! They'll wonder where I am…wait for Raoul!

Harry sang back, "Christine, I love you!"

Hermione sang on, "Order your fine horses! Be with them at the door!"

Harry sang, "And soon you'll be beside me!"

Hermione sang, "You'll guard me and you'll guide me…"

The hurry off. The Phantom emerges from behind the statue.

Draco sang, "I gave you my music…made you song take wing…and now, how you've repaid me: denied me and betrayed me…He was bound to love you when he heard you sing…Christine…Christine…"

Harry and Hermione sing from offstage. "Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime…say the word and I will follow you…Share each day with me, each night, each morning…"

Draco sang, outraged. "You will curse the day you did not do all that the Phantom asked of you…!"

As the roof of the opera house disappears, the opera curtain closes and the PRICIPALS in 'Il Muto' appear through it for their bows, Christine conspicuously dressed in Carlotta's costume. Simultaneously, we hear maniacal laughter of the Phantom and see him high above the stage, where he is perilously rocking the chandelier. The lights of the chandelier begin flickering and, at a great cry form him, it descends, swinging madly over the orchestra pit.

Draco yelled, "GO!"

The chandelier falls to the stage at Christine's feet.
