SOMETHING STRANGE
CHAPTER ONE: the begining
Jareth sighed heavy as he gazed into his sphere, delicately dancing it along his nimble hands. This was all that was left of him - an outcast with nothing more to do than gaze at moments passed through a cystal screen. Moments of his glory, of his brilliance, and of the girl that brought him to nothing. Where was she now? Where was Toby? Did he remember when he was but a baby, stolen away to another world? Jareth cocked his head as a silvery image of Sarah appeared. Her hair was done up with silver accents and her shimmering gown glistened next to a tall, handsom man with blonde hair. "And you, Sarah...do you remember?" His voice was but a whisper.
In the chill of the night, Jereth leaned back against a lonely wall. This was one of the walls that bound the labyrinth. He drew his head back and, with a sigh, the steam of his breath floated away into the air. Stars speckled the sky and he couldn't help but wonder why everything he wished for was taken away - so far away. A breeze pushed and pulled at the strands of hair that lay in front of his eyes and the calm of the evening was no match for the war that was brewing inside of him. It was a war that was slowly picking apart his heart.
Far off in the distance came a strange noise. It was high pitched and happy, and sounded like small feet bouncing on pavement. It drew nearer and a small, skinny girl came into view. Her frame was sleek and she seemed to glide with every movement she made. Her white night gown was practically glowing through the darkness. She was running after a few biting faeries and what seemed to be a disgruntled pixie. She was grabbing at their feet and tugging on their wings as if she expected them to not feel a thing.
And suddenly she stopped.
She turned her gaze towards the slumped over man across from her. Her gaze was blank but somehow intreagued. Almost mechanically she moved with an odd grace and approached him. Jareth only stared at her in awe. Never before had he seen such a child as this.
"What are you doing here?" She asked quietly.
"..." Jareth drew a breath, pulling himself back into his normal persona. "I do believe that the better question is...what are you doing here?" He grinned with a touch of arrogance.
The little girl looked around. "Why..." Her voice sounded empty. "I am not sure." Jareth stood up as she spoke. She only watched him wide-eyed as he moved.
"Well, if you don't know, then neither do I." With that, Jereth began to stalk off.
"Waaait!" The girl whinned from behind him.
Stiffly, Jareth paused. "What is it?"
"I don't want to be left alone. I don't want to be left behind." The little girl's words sounded so empty but strangely struck needles through Jareth's heart nonetheless.
For a moment he couldn't move. A million fleeting thoughts raced through his mind and suddenly he missed the way it used to be desparately. Before now, he would have been able to turn his back on this little girl and never think twice about it. But now...now - what had happened to him?
"Alright." He said smoothly, comforting himself in knowing that he could still keep up his act. "But if you bother me one bit, I'll let my goblins carry you off." He laughed with arrogance and filled himself with a warm despair and a cold remembrance of his once magnificent reign as The Goblin King.
