Chapter 8: Mo Isatsu no Kogeki: Another Attack
3rd Person's POV
"Hiei!" Mizuko cried out in surprise, but relief filled her every bone. Hiei, calm as always, let go of the rolling pin. Mizuko placed it on the kitchen counter and sighed in relief. "Thank Kami-sama it was you." Hiei asked, with a good amount of irritation, "Would you care explaining why you were attempting to crack my skull?" "Oh, that. Ahehehe…" Mizuko laughed sheepishly. "I, uh, thought you were a robber." "If you had paid more attention, you probably could've identified the different energy signature." Hiei was clearly unhappy about the whole issue. "Gomene." Mizuko said, bowing her head down. Hiei observed her for a while before asking her, "What are you doing here?" "Just wanted to get a drink. What were you doing here, in the dark and everything?" "Hn. None of your business, on-Mizuko." Mizuko grinned, happy that he remembered to call her by name.
Mizuko headed to the fridge and opened the door. "You want anything Hiei?" "Hn." Mizuko shrugged and filled a glass with milk. After she finished, she rinsed the glass and placed it back in the cupboard. Hiei just stood next to it, not saying anything. [Why is he watching me?] "So, um, I'll be heading back to bed." She began to walk towards the door. Just then, the clouds decided that the moon had come out long enough and moved over it. The kitchen plunged into the dark again. Suddenly, Mizuko tripped and fell. She reflexively reached out to grab hold of anything to stop her fall. The nearest object happened to be Hiei's cloak. Without warning, Hiei was pulled down and CRASH!!. Both of them crashed onto the kitchen floor. Amazingly, the racket they made didn't wake the others.
Hiei's POV
I felt my lips pressed onto something. It was soft and warm, and it has a sort of milky taste. In a split second I drew up, extremely surprised by the strange feeling. The clouds left the moon then and light flooded in. The first thing that registered in my mind was that I was on top of Mizuko. Staring into her wide eyes, I observed that we were not injured. I was kind of relieved that everything was okay. [Wait! I'm on top of her! That is NOT okay!] We instantly jumped apart. I saw Mizuko turned so red, she might've looked like a red light bulb. But I was trying to resist a blush myself, which surprised me. I had never blushed in any occasion. At most I was surprised, like now. I felt my ears burn.
Mizuko's POV
It lasted for just a split second, but it still stunned me. And it was still my first kiss. I couldn't stop blushing. I tried to think straight but my brain didn't seem to be working properly right now. Then I saw his ears turned red and realized Hiei must be pretty embarrassed. Although, I couldn't stop myself from thinking, [He's blushing?! Kawaii!] I could swear I turned even redder at this thought. "O-Oyasumi!" I quickly left the kitchen. Once in my room, I tried to sort out my thoughts. [Oh my god! I can't believe Hiei just kissed me! But it was just an accident! I'm sure he wouldn't even think about this. It was just a brush and a total accident!] [But, he's still your first, girl.] [I know!] [Ooh someone's blushing again.] [Shut up!]
Kurama's POV
The moment Hiei and Mizuko-san walked in, I knew something was up. They were avoiding each other's eyes and I noticed Mizuko blush as soon as she saw Hiei. Even Hiei seemed a little awkward. Very little goes unnoticed for me. It must be my fox nature. As Hiei took his window seat, I made my way towards my best friend. "Something seems to be bothering you Hiei." "Hn." I smiled lightly. Hiei's response could be translated in many ways and I take it that something is occupying his mind. "Is it about Mizuko-san?" "…" [I take that as a yes. I wonder what happened between them. It could only have been last night, since they were totally fine that day before.] "Yusuke," Mizuko addressed him quietly. "Hm? Yeah?" "I need to see Koenma." All eyes fell upon her as she made her request. "You want to see the toddler, now?" Mizuko nodded. "There is no need." Koenma suddenly appeared behind Yusuke, surprising the latter.
Mizuko's POV
I turned expectantly, knowing that the little prince probably had some information. "I have managed to get some information about your mother." Everyone in the room perked up while I waited for him to continue. "Her name is Miwa. Where she's from remains unknown. Very little information is available about her. And one more thing, she was murdered, by-" "Tai." I finished for him. While the others were simply stunned, Koenma was surprised. "How did you…" "My mother told me, last night." "Is that possible?" asked a puzzled Kurama. Yusuke rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "I only know that a spirit can do that. When I was a spirit I went into Keiko's dream to tell her not to cremate my body." "That brings me to another thing. When she died, her spirit should've reported to Reikai. But she didn't." "So she's a lingering spirit?" Yusuke inquired. Koenma shook his head, "No, it seems more like she just disappeared. There's no trace of her spirit at all." "That's so weird." Kuwabara wondered aloud. "Yeah." Yusuke agreed. [No trace of her spirit? How can a spirit just disappear like that?] "Arigatou, Koenma." I thanked him. He just waved it off, a small smile o his face. "But it still doesn't clear up what they want with Mizuko." Yusuke looked at me, as though I might provide him with an answer. "Sa na." I turned away. [They don't need to know, not yet.] I walked out of the room, "I'm going to train."
Pulling the shurikens out of a tree, I sighed in boredom. [I wished I could really spar with someone.] Just then Kuwabara walked pass. From the way he was skipping, he must've just talked to Yuki or something. Grinning, I called out his name, "Kuwabara!" He turned, on his face an idiotic smile. "You mind training with me? Trees and wooden blocks can't move." "But I can't hit women!" "Come on, it's just training. You're not really hitting me. Onegai shimasu." "Okay." He agreed hesitatingly. We faced each other and he produced his Reiken. I drew out my daggers and slid into fighting stance. Kuwabara let out a battle cry as he charged forward. While I evaded his attacks, my mind wandered off like always when I'm training. [My father is after for my powers, but why?] I easily sidestepped a slash to the right. [If by transferring her powers to me she can break the bond that must mean he's after me to get that bond back.] I jumped and evade another slash across the chest. [What about kaasan? If her spirit can't be traced…] A leisurely thrown kunai was deflected. I dashed forward and sword clashed with daggers. [Could it be that my father is keeping kaasan's spirit imprisoned?] Kuwabara managed to push me back and began slashing away. I easily jumped, sidestepped and blocked all the attacks. I swept my leg under him, knocking him off balance. I was quick to engage him in a combo of slashes. [Or did she hide in fear that Tai might find her?] Grabbing a handful of shurikens, I flung them towards him. He quickly jumped aside. I cursed under my breath and wished my shurikens would turn around and attack him again.
[Heh?] I watched in surprise as the shurikens did a U-turn and headed straight for Kuwabara. He too was surprised as he raised his sword to defend himself, although he was grazed by a few. "What was that?" asked a stunned Kuwabara. "I don't know." Suddenly I had an idea and concentrated. In my mind I directed the fallen shurikens to once again attack Kuwabara. To my greatest excitement, they floated into the air and hovered a while before shooting themselves at Kuwabara. His eyes widened and he waved his sword around. I quickly imagined my shurikens swerving out of the way and spinning around. It happened. Seeing that the shurikens seemed to have minds of their own, Kuwabara began to run in the opposite direction, yelling curses along the way. His yells attract the attention of Kurama-niisan, Yusuke and Genkai-sensei. Yusuke was shocked to see shurikens flying after Kuwabara. "Nanda kore wa?" A cheeky smile broke out on my face as I commanded a few kunais towards him. Kuwabara was also running towards him, shurikens whizzing behind him. Seeing this, Yusuke did the first thing that came to mind. He ran, with Kuwabara, shurikens and kunais hot on his heels. At this amusing scene, I couldn't hold back my laughter and burst out. Kurama-niisan politely tried to suppress his own laughter and failed incredibly. He too burst out in fits of laughter. My concentration faded, the weapons fell harmlessly to the ground. Yusuke and Kuwabara sat on the ground, panting. Yusuke jumped up and yelled at me, "Are you trying to kill us?!" "How did you do that anyway?" I struggled to curb the laughter and ended up grinning from ear to ear. Again I concentrated and my weapons flew towards me. I made them circle me. "Sugoi! Telekinesis!" Yusuke exclaimed. I nodded, still too excited to speak. I collected them back into my holster. I'm ecstatic that my abilities had another breakthrough! "This is so cool!"
As I continued to train with the supervision of Kurama-niisan and Genkai-sensei, I discovered more about my newfound ability. For one, I could only move light or small objects. And there was a limit as to how far my range of control would go. Past this limit and I'll lose my control over the object. Also, I couldn't control multiple groups of objects yet. With all this information in my head, I skipped all the way back to the temple, much like the manner Kuwabara did when he first passed my training spot.
Meanwhile, 3rd Person's POV
In the dimly lit hall, Kou could be seen kneeling on one knee. Some distance in front of him, a man was seated on a large seat. His face was hidden in the shadows. Kou never did like reporting to his superior, be it good or bad news. "You're back soon. And?" "I failed to bring the princess back but I have tested her abilities as you ordered." "I did expect her to refuse. What level of power has she?" "She managed a scratch on me." Kou however, didn't reveal that he had pulled back at the last second and opted to do something else. Namely, to kiss her. "Ho? She must be quite capable then." Kou kept his silence, trying to suppress the distaste he felt whenever the man used this tone to speak. "You have done well enough. Dismissed." "Ha." Kou got up and walked out. Outside the hall, he caught sight of a heavily built demon standing in the middle of the way with two other demons. He frowned. "So the great Kage no Kou has failed his mission."
Kou's POV
I remained expressionless at the taunt Bako threw at me. He was one of Tai's right-hand men. A demon with a large body, Bako had no brains. Bako was well-known for his brute strength. "Now, now, Bako. Are you trying to insult Kou? It would unwise to do so." Seko said with dripping sarcasm. Kokatsu smirked too. Seko and Kokatsu were also Tai's right-hand men. From what I care to know, these two were brothers. They lacked strength but made up in cunningness. We're of the same positions, right-hand men, but I don't even consider us as same. Bako had an innate sense of pride that bordered arrogance with idiocy. The brothers were cunningly sly and would grovel if they were near the gates of hell. They disgust me to no end and I would never consider us as 'same'. I walked pass them, ignoring their smirks and insults.
This was a place filled with disgusting things. I had no wish to be here. I loathed the three demons, who were proud for killing ningens. But more so, I hated Tai. His actions and thoughts contradicted with all my thoughts and principles. But I'm bound to him. Bound to serve and obey him. I put a hole through the wall with my fist. [To be controlled, to be put down to such a level that I have to follow orders.] I have my own honour but it had come second to having to take orders from him. [Why can't he go get his musume himself?] Which brought me to another subject. Sairen Mizuko, an interesting onna and ningen. The look in her eyes when they fought. Determination and the need to be strong shone right through them. I had never encountered a person with such strong determination in my whole demon life. But other than that, she had sparked something else in my heart. A small fire had been lit in the darkness of my soul, burning like her fierce eyes. There was one time I felt like this, but I smouldered the flames. Now, the feeling has been awakened and it's growing out of my control.
Mizuko's POV
"Maybe we should get this one." Keiko held up another shirt. I just smiled. Unlike most girls, shopping wasn't really my favourite activity. I would prefer to sit down in a bookstore. But, Botan and Keiko gracefully asked me to go on a shopping trip with them and well, couldn't refuse now, could I? After a little while, we decided to head back. On the way, we chatted and laughed like the young girls we were. "Hm?" I grew alert. "Doushita?" I shook my head, "I don't know. But I've got a strange feeling." For one moment, we stood silently. As I suddenly noticed something jump out the bushes, I pushed the two girls away. Where we were standing just a second ago, a long menacing-looking sickle had its tip buried in the ground. Suddenly, laughter filled the air. I froze. The voice was filled with ill intent and malice. Two figures revealed themselves. They were demons, and scrawny ones at that. One of them picked out the sickle. "I thought I'd hit them." "Let us introduce ourselves. I'm Seko and this…" he pointed to the demon with the sickle. "…is my otouto, Kokatsu." He had a sly grin that I didn't like on his face. "And we are here on Tai-sama no meirei to capture you."
"Hey, Seko. Those other two looked rather pretty. Why don't we play with them?" He grinned like a sick pervert. Botan screamed at them. "Hentai!" "Don't be shy now!" Kosatsu approached them but stopped as I planted a kunai in the ground at his feet. "Leave my friends alone." "Oh, you want to fight now?" Seko drew out his own sickle as Kosatsu rejoined him. Drawing my daggers, I yelled at Botan and Keiko, "Get out of here now! Get help!" Then I ran into the bushes. I knew they will come after me as Tai needed me badly. As I anticipated they were right at my heels. I continued to run, luring them as far from Botan and Keiko as possible, but Seko suddenly appeared in front of me. Kosatsu dropped behind me, blocking any means of retreat. As both began to swing their sickle, I gritted my teeth and slid into an attacking stance.
