Author's Note: It's been a long time since I've written any fanfiction – it amazes me, but with school and life it has been extremely busy. I can't believe that it's been nearly 3 years since "The X-Files" went off the air. Time just flies. Well enjoy this very short vignette that I wrote while I was bored at work today!

The old world is gone to them – fantasy and dreams rarely echo in the barren night as they wait – anticipating. Anticipating the end, the beginning, an arrival – all balled into one. They always cling to one another at night with the fear gripping the other through their weak hands.
Years ago they would have never thought that this is how they'd end up – any inkling whatsoever at the life they have now would have sent them screaming in the other direction. Maybe not so much him since his life was ruined years ago by an abduction that he believed was supposed to be his own, but she had a loving family that assumes she's gone forever – would she have given all that up?
To be with him she would.
She has.
Nearly three years they have been clinging to one another at night afraid that once darkness overtook them the other would disappear. Even after assuming 'the perfect life' they never thought they'd get – fear still gripped them. In the back of their minds they held onto the thought that they would never be safe – ever.
They knew too much.
They always did.
Whoever told them that knowledge is power should have quieted long ago. Knowledge cost them their safety, their freedom, jobs, friends.
And their son.
He's four years old with light red hair, dark green eyes and a sultry pout, but he wasn't safe with them.
He never was.
Just a month ago she celebrated her 41st birthday on the heels of receiving some disturbing news: another life grew within her. Most mothers when finding out that they are with child would be exuberant and scared – she was terrified.
Fitting enough she was due around Thanksgiving – a holiday they didn't even acknowledge anymore. Their thanks only went as deep as knowing that they were with one another. How could one be thankful if their entire existence is in the hands of lies and men who were like rats?
Seven years are left until that day.
Could the fate of mankind be saved in seven years? It seemed unlikely – until she received the news.
The child that had already started to develop in her womb was one that came from the love of two people as they clung to one another night after night ready to accept their fate: there was no way they could fix their lives.
They were ready for the first time in their existences to just let the world become engulfed in an invasion that they fought to protect it from for a decade.
Hearing this news gave them an excuse to fight. To fight for the child that grew with in a once barren womb. She should have died years ago of cancer, but once again when their worlds seemed to be coming to an end momentum would shift – there'd be a cure, a life – Hope. Once again they had a reason to live and to fight a promising future.
"Scully," he whispers a name that has been dead to both of them for nearly three years, "There is hope."
She smiles at him and places his hand over her abdomen. They'd find a way to fight – and to live because in that moment they decided to bring a child into a world.
A child that would change everything.
