The office of the Torch remained mostly quiet as Chloe basked in the glow of getting the weekly edition done early, complete with a splashy head line. She looked up when there was a knock on the door. It was the pink princess herself.
"You look happy," said Lana.
"Well, when everyone, including Clark, gets their articles in on time it's cause for celebration."
"Glad someone has reason to be happy," said Lana, her voice carefully flat. Chloe's keen reporter eye caught the signs that Lana had been crying. Against her better judgement; Lana could be crying over something trivial and go into a full blown tangent, Chloe asked what was wrong.
Lana remained silent for a few moments, then spoke in a whisper, "Whitney broke up with me." Chloe was only a little shocked, everyone had seen it coming, but they seemed like an inseperable couple. Then again, even Ken and Barbie had eventually called it quits.
Chloe quickly debated the pros and cons before asking, "Why?"
"I told him something he didn't want to hear," she looked almost near tears, and Chloe felt compassion rise in her. "He wouldn't even look at me when I told him."
Chloe wondered what could be that bad, "Well, you're not a meteor mutant, right?" she asked, trying to make the distraught brunette smile.
Lana only let the ghost of a smile show, "No….I told him…I told him I wasw in love with someone else."
"Clark?" asked Chloe immediately, then regretted it as Lana's face hardened.
"No," she laughed bitterly, "Not Clark, but that's what Whitney thought too. Not Clark, not anyone I should love; by Smallville's standards anyway."
"Well, Smallville's standards aren't very normal." Chloe's reporter side was silently begging Lana to cut to the chase.
"I love a girl," Lana blurted out.
Chloe paused, the blinked. Then blinked again. Lana stared at Chloe waiting for a reaction. But Chloe's brain was too busy trying to process what had just been said. Ms. Goody Goody a lesbian, or bi, or….no, she was supposed to be the one to geth the jock and they'd raise equally perfect children.
This shattered all preconceived notions the world had of Lana Lang. Chloe managed to find her voice and said, "Who?"
The room was completely silent, as if the air itself were holding its breath, waiting for the answer. Chloe vaguely wondered why there was no sound from the hall.
Finally, Lana said one word, "You." Again Chloe's brain ground to a halt and the word seemed to echo. Lana too the silence as a bad thing. "I should go," she said, swiftly moving to the door.
Chloe finally registered that Lana was half-way out the door and got up to stop her. "Wait!" Lana stopped but did not turn around. Chloe moved closer. "Lana, she whispered, "Lana, look at me."
Lana turned around an was met with a tentative kiss. Chloe's lips were so soft. She gasped as the other girl pulled her closer, allowing the blonde's hot tongue to invade her mouth. They pulled each other still closer, forming an air tight seal between them. After a few minutes they pulled apart slightly breatless and flushed. Lana spoke in a whisper.
"I guess I could stay."
