A/n: The song is Holy Water by Big & Rich. Review. Pairing: Spike/Dawn

He tried to look out for her for so long, tried protecting her, tried saving her. Couldn't be her knight in shinning armor though, wasn't good enough for that honor. Soulless monster that he was. And yet, she never saw him as that. He'd always be a knight in her eyes. What he didn't know, was that as he was trying to save her, she was falling. Falling and no one noticed.

Somewhere there's a stolen halo
I used to watch her wear it well.
Everything would shine wherever she would go
But lookin at her now you'd never tell.

She was angelic, beautifully innocence. He didn't know whether the Key in her tainted her or made her only more pure. It was never defined in his mind. Either way she was his savior, his raven haired blue eyed angel. Only this angel had lost her halo in a sea of purples and whites.

Someone ran away with her innocence;
A memory she can't get out of her head.
And I can only imagin what she's feelin when she's pray'n
Kneeling at the edge of her bed.

Thoughts of her growing up terrified him, and yet when he saw her in shirts that showed her breasts and skintight jeans made specifically for guys eyes, he still denied it. Then one night, he found her in her room. She was sitting next to her bed, knowing how the world was coming to an end. And he smelt man on her, teenage boy in the worst sense.

And she says - take me away
And take me father
Surround me now,
And hold - hold - hold me like holy water holy water

All her memories were fake, and he knew that upset her so much. She had never really met her dad, and every girl needs their father to tell them stories with happy endings and fairytales. In the life she lives, fairytales would have been nice.

She wants someone to call her angel,
Someone to put the light back in her eyes,
She's looking through the faces and the unfamiliar places
She needs someone to hear her when she cries.

He never knew how ignored she felt, how she had formed a distance, how she had run, never looking back. She was different now, colder. Tear tracks and alcohol fumes, cigarette smoke and pot. The things she had become in her attempt to be noticed.

And she says - take me away
And take me father
Surround me now,
And hold - hold - hold me like holy water

She was so pure, there was no doubt she would burn his flesh. But he wouldn't care to hold her in his arms.

She just needs a little help to wash away the pain she's felt
She wants to feel the healing hands of someone who understands
And she says - take me away
And take me father
Surround me now,
And hold - hold - hold me
And she says
Take me away
And take me father
Surround me now,
And hold - hold - hold me like holy water
Like holy water, like holy water, like holy water

He'd take her to heaven, just to hold her in his arms. He'd rip out her father's heart, just to hold her in his arms. He'd watch her forever, just to hold her in his arms. He'd stand in the sun, if he did so in her arms.
