-Balance-
Balance
Raven lifted her arms, spinning slowly to the beat of the music.
The instinctive force that keeps us upright
She let go, letting her body move on its own. Her mind drifted in the rhythmic beats of the music, releasing the tension in her body.
Keeps us from falling
Free in the moment, she closed her eyes, heart slowing to a soothing and constant pulse in her veins,
Tripping over ourselves
Stumbling
A knock on her door shattered the drifting sensation and she nearly fell, eyes glaring at the door even as she moved to turn off the music.
"What?" Her annoyed tone told Beast Boy he had definitely done something wrong.
"Uh… do you want to come out? You've been in there for almost a whole day now, Raven… Is everything okay?"
"No it's not! As long as you keep breaking my concentration, I'm not going to be okay!"
He winced. Her yells sounded infuriated and somehow he couldn't blame her.
"We're worried about you, Raven. We care about you- like any good friend would be! You don't have to yell; for once it would be nice if you appreciated how much we do care if you're locked up in that room for three days, only coming out to eat and then for a minute at max!"
She stood, facing the door, hands clenched as she tightened her jaw.
"You don't have to worry about me! I'm fine!"
"It doesn't seem like that to us, Raven! Every time something happens- Malchior, and now your birthday- you retreat into hiding and refuse to even talk to us! Your teammates!"
She stiffened, hearing only faintly the sigh from the other side of the door.
"I'm sorry Raven. It's just… we really do are about you." The whisper was so soft she thought she hadn't heard right. "Me, most of all…"
The door slid open and he jumped, head coming up to stare at Raven. She was in the doorway, violet eyes looking at him strangely.
"You care, Beast Boy?"
"Of course I do! I'm your teammate…" It was a lame cover up, and they both knew it.
Raven sighed suddenly.
"If that's what you say…"
But around you
My balance falters
The mask drops, for a moment
Before I raise it up again
And balance returns
"Just leave me alone, all right? I have my reasons. Good night." The door closed and she reached for the power button on the boom box.
But balance can't keep me from falling in love with you.
The music started and she relaxed, losing herself in the notes that filled her room. For a while, at least, she could escape the outside world.
Beast Boy listened to the haunting notes filter through the door, ears drooping slightly.
"Just your teammate… No, Raven, it's more than that. I lied. Please, don't tune us out. One day, you might not come out… And that scares me. Just- just don't fall, Raven."
He turned, going back down the gloomy hallway, unaware that in her room, Raven had paused, staring through the door to where he had been.
"Just- just don't fall, Raven."
No, I won't-
Not like that-
My balance is here, in you-
I'll never fall while you're here.
