"Daddy!" A young girl of nine cried as Draco sat up in bed. His daughter must have had another nightmare. He got out of bed and went down the upstairs hall of Malfoy Manor, to his daughter's bedroom. When he opened the door, Draco saw Lauryn, crying while her older brother Evan hugged her.
"Lauryn, what happened?" Draco knelt down and looked at his crying little girl. She had a combination of his blond hair and her mum's curls, along with big brown eyes that currently were streaming with tears. She wasn't in Hogwarts yet.
"I... saw... Mummy, but then... she just... got swallowed up by... a huge... shadow. It was going to swallow you and Evan too!" Lauryn began crying again. Draco looked up at his son. He had inherited his mum's brown curly hair, and its thickness. But he had his father's blue-grey eyes. Evan loved schoolwork, just like his mother, and was in Ravenclaw.
"That's what she told me." Evan's voice cracked as memories of his mother came up. She had been killed when he was 11 and Lauryn was 7, hunting several Death Eaters in Romania. Draco tried hard to keep his own tears from flowing. He missed her desperately.
"Lauryn, nothing like that will happen to us, honey. I promise... Voldemort's gone. He won't come back." Draco whispered. His daughter nodded sadly, but her tears had stopped. Evan was wiping his own tears furiously. He would get even with those murderers for killing his mum. They hadn't been caught yet, and it had already been two years...
Draco gave his kids one last hug, tucked Lauryn in, and ushered Evan back to his room. Afterwards, Draco took out a piece of parchment and his quill. Dipping it in ink, he began writing.
Dear Hermione,
How are you doing, love? Lauryn had a nightmare tonight. She thought you, Evan, and I were swallowed up by a shadow. Evan's going back to Hogwarts in a week. He's going into his third year now. When Lauryn gets in, Evan will be in his seventh year. Amazing how fast our kids are growing up... Seems like yesterday that Evan was a toddler, running around our backyard. Well, we all miss you so much. Just give us a sign that you still love us... Lauryn and Evan need you desperately. I don't think they will ever get over your death. Neither will I, in fact. Good-bye, love...
Draco
AN: So, this is a two-part fic. Hermione died in her Auror work, leaving Draco with their kids. I based Evan and Lauryn off two of my friends. Those are their real names too. Look forward to the second part!
