Doe
It was slightly awkward, with the doctor standing right next to him as he watched her sleep.
So peaceful, so silent, so beautiful, it amazed him how even when in a deep slumber, she still managed to retain her beauty.
Tears began to form behind his eyes, realisation getting the better of him.
The doctor placed a comforting hand on his shoulder; he jerked it away, caring for nothing but the woman before him.
"Liv," a tear fell, then two, then three.
At least a dozen more tears leaked their way from their cage before he could even think her name once again.
"Olivia," he said with more confidence. He wanted her to respond, God he wanted it so badly. He looked at the doctor beside him, his eyes looked vacant. He didn't care the way Elliot did.
Elliot looked back at Olivia, took her cold hand in his trembling ones and said, loudly and clearly, "Olivia?" His breath could be seen as nothing but vacant mist now occupying the air-conditioned hospital room. He held her hand tighter, even closer to his heart, excitement flooding through him, but her eyes remained shut, he could see, even through the cloud of tears blinding him, that she wanted to open her eyes, yet she did not control them.
Elliot wiped the tears using his free hand and, so that every syllable rang clearly through the room:
"Olivia!"
Nothing happened. Elliot knew she longed for the same happy ending he did. If she could hear him, she would answer him. Olivia loved him. She'd said this. Right – right before.
Elliot remained quite still for a moment, then, dropping her hand at her side, he punched the doctor square in the face. He had been convinced, for a whole, shining moment, that he was going to see Olivia, talk to her again…
Disappointment was burning in his throat; he leaned in and kissed her on her forehead.
"I love you too," he whispered before turning on his heal and blindly leaving the hospital, tears the likes of which threatened to drown him at any moment.
As he drove to his empty house, he couldn't help but wonder that this was all a dream, a terrifying, awful, sick, disgusting dream and that soon he would wake with the most magnificent thing in his life beside him, Olivia Benson. But what he didn't know, that was certainly going to confirm it, like a slap in the face, was going on at the very moment he kissed her picture goodnight.
Across town, in the hospital, the label "Jane Doe 127" had been replaced with "Detective Olivia Benson".
End.
