Disclaimer: I'm just taking them out for a test drive. I promise not to hurt the Hulk™ or the Waif™ in any permanent way. Just ask CC, I was nice to his creations, and I'll be nice to DW's too, maybe.
Thanks: To everyone who gave feedback on Say Your Name. Feedback feeds the author's soul and can be just the thing to keep one writing. I love you guys.
A/N: Just a little drabble to pass the time. I, apparently, miss writing the kids when I don't do it for a couple of days. Yes, that means that Say Your Name is done, I'm just trying to not overload everyone. I make no promises on this one.
True friendship is seen through the heart not through the eyes. – Unknown
It had been another grueling day, the end of another hellish week. The paperwork had been stacking up for two weeks and their plans to start on it had been quickly dashed that morning by a rather inconvenient art gallery robbery.
Tension between the two had been slowly rising, little things starting to wear them down. They both were sorely in need of some time off, away from each other. But the Fates saw things differently, conspiring to force them together for another Friday night of chasing down leads and interviewing uncooperative witnesses.
After the fourth interview that yielded no obvious results, she was fed up. Climbing into the driver's seat of the SUV, she wished for a stiff drink and some peace. But she knew she would have to settle for a few moments of silence while he gathered his thoughts, and a drink of her cold coffee, residing in the cup holder to her right.
Staring blankly ahead, instinct took over and she reached numbly for the cup. As her hand closed around it, his hand closed around hers. Surprised, she pulled back quickly, tipping the cup into the console. Cursing softly, her left hand searched the map pocket for the package of tissue she kept there.
As she located the packet, she realized that he had not let go of her right hand. Turning, her question half formed on her lips, she saw the look on his face.
Despite how miserable she felt the moment before, a grin tugged at her lips. The sheepish look he gave her drained away her tension. Her shoulders dropped, her jaw unclenched and she smiled for the first time in days, her face luminous.
He ran his thumb along the back of her hand a moment before letting go. He took the tissue from her and quickly cleaned up the spilled liquid, grinning like a fool the entire time.
Satisfied that the mess was handled, he sat back and looked expectantly at her. She smiled before putting the truck in gear. As she prepared to pull into traffic, she looked over at him one more time and broke the silence.
"You never cease to amaze me, Bobby."
