The Moment of Truth
By: Nakamura Michiyo
Duo was wringing his hands together anxiously, watching Heero with nervous eyes as he ate his breakfast hastily before guarding Relena in another one of her meetings. Duo scowled. Can't she get another bodyguard to protect her and her stupid pink limo? That Relena was cutting his precious time with Heero-chan. He was pulled back to earth when he saw Heero grabbing his keys to the car, getting ready to go. This was it. The moment he'd been waiting for.
"Er, Heero-chan?" Duo said, wiping his hands fretfully.
"What is it?" Heero was right about to go out the door, but stopped to listen.
"Ahh…um…well…" Duo stuttered. What was he waiting for?
Heero sighed. "I'm in a hurry. Whatever it is you're trying to say can wait until tonight."
'You just want to be with your dear Relena' Duo couldn't stop the small spark of jealously that exploded inside him. "Have a safe trip."
He doubted that Heero even heard him, because his car was already pulling out of the garage. Duo berated himself silently for thinking that he even had half a chance of being with Heero. He felt his spirit hit the rock bottom, and he decided to bake a cake, which was the only thing that seemed to cheer him up these days. As he was getting ready the ingredients, an idea suddenly struck him, and he immediately brightened. Many people didn't know it, but Heero loved chocolate cake, and maybe he could give him this particular delicacy while confessing his love for him. Pathetic, he knew, but he was determined to make Heero accept him. He started whistling cheerfully, working on his three-layer cake, and before he knew it, it was dusk. He cleaned himself up and made sure that the kitchen had no flour in its glistening counter. He briefly thought about music, but he knew that if he played any romantic song in front of Heero, he would immediately suspect something. If Duo just gave him the cake, Heero would just think he did something wrong.
"What did you do wrong?" Heero said suspiciously.
"Nothing" Duo said innocently. "I just wanted to surprise you."
He watched Heero tentatively cut a piece, checking for poison.
"How dare you think that I would poison your food?" Duo said, pretending to be offended.
"Just making sure" Heero said calmly, taking a bite.
Heero watched Duo fidget as he took another bite. He sighed.
"Do you need to tell me something?" he asked Duo.
"Nope" Duo said.
A moment passed before Duo spoke again.
"Actually…" Duo said, drifting off.
"Spit it out" Heero stopped eating and looked at him.
'You can't back out now' "I…IthinkI'mfallinginlovewithyou."
"I'm sorry. I didn't quite catch that. If only you would speak a little slower…"
Duo said it slower this time. "I think I'm falling in love with you. No, scratch that. I already love you" Duo breathed deeply. "I love you. I love you."
"I get the message" Heero stood up and headed for his room. "Why are you still sitting there? What did you expect me to say to you? 'I love you too, more than anything in the world?' You always were a bit dull in the head."
Duo felt tears sting his eyes, but he roughly wiped them away. Heero will only shun him more if he saw him cry. He turned to see Heero standing behind him.
"But if you did think so, then you're right" Heero smiled at him.
'He smiled' Duo thought, and his heart filled with warmth.
"I love you too, you braided baka."
Duo felt like crying again, but this time he let them flow, for these were tears of happiness.
