Rosencrantz couldn't sleep. He andGuildenstern were on their way to see their goo friend Hamlet. They had stoped for the night next to a small stream. Guildenstern had fallen asleep very easily. Rosencrantez on the other hand kept waking up. Everytime he fell aslep he saw the same thing. Two men hanging from a tree. He had no idea what it ment so he decided to ask Guildenstern.
"Guildenstern...Guildenstern, are you awake?"
"No," came Guildensterns sleepy reply.
Rosencrantz wasnt convinced.
"If you were asleep you wouldnt be able to answer me."
Turning towards Rosencrantz, keeping his eyes closed, Guildenstern said," I could be talkin in my sleep."
"Well, if you're able to converse in your sleep I'd like you to tell me what the dream I just had means. I saw two men hanging from a tree by ropes around their necks."
"Well," Guildenstern said," it means someone is going to be betrayed and then hung."
Rosencrantz looked at his 'sleeping' companion.
"Who do you suppose they are? Who is their betrayer?"
Guildenstern sighed. This will shut him up.
"It will be us and Hamlet will be our betrayer. Go to sleep."
He rolled over and was soon aslep again. Rosencrantz looked up at the stars wondering if Guildenstern had told him the truth or not.
Days later
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stood an stools with ropes around their necks. Rosencrantz looked at the rope on his neck.
"That's it then, is it? Done nothing wrong. Didn't harm anyone did we?"
He looked over at Guildenstern, who only stared forward.
"I can't remember."
Rosencrantz sighed. "All right then. I don't care. I've had enough. To tell you the truth I'm relived."
"There must have been a moment, in the beginning, when we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. We'll remember next time."
The player grabbed the ropes tied to their stools.
"Untill then."
Guildenstern closed his eyes tighty. Rosencrantz looked over at him and did the same. The player pulled the ropes. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern fell, their necks snapping imedeatly.
Rosencrantz looked at his dead body, hanging next to Guildensterns.
"I should think they'll put us in a box now. Not the same box of course, but still in a box."
Guildenstern rolled his eyes. Not again. Rosencrantz started talking about life and death in a box.
"Can't you talk about anything else for once. We have all eternity and all you can talk about is life and death in a box."
