George groaned in frustration. It had to have been the thousandth time that he counted the same sloppily painted stars on his bedroom ceiling. There were fifty-seven of them. Well, fifty-seven and a half. One didn't quite get finished. For the past three nights he had lay alone in the room or paced across the floor. Fred had been going out on nightly walks that he preferred to take by himself. These walks often took several hours and Fred never explained why or where he went. It bothered George to know that there was something his brother could not talk to him about. Something he had to do alone. They were usually able to talk to each other about everything that went on in their lives but for some reason Fred had become very secretive. It all happened without any warning.

Fred had received an owl from some mysterious person at the beginning of the week. Ever since then he had been acting strange. Then, the nightly walks started. He had pretty much been ignoring George and avoiding him every chance he had. George had been patient. He waited for Fred to come to him and let him know what was bothering him. Fred was taking to long. George knew what he had to do. He had to confront his brother.

Another uneventful hour passed. George had nearly fallen asleep. He was hardly able to keep his eyes open. Was it possible that Fred had decided not to come home? Ordinarily George would not be concerned but with Fred's recent behavior George did not know what to think.

George awoke to the sound of a creaking bedroom door. Fred was finally home. George struggled to sit up. Fred did not seem to notice any movement from across the room. He was stumbling blindly toward his bed.

"Where have you been?" George found it difficult to speak. He attempted to keep the anger that he felt out of his voice. Fred turned quickly towards George. He clearly had not expected to wake his brother.

"Nowhere, just go back to sleep." Fred snapped once he regained his composure. George refused to be left in the dark again. He had to know the truth and he would find out, no matter how much he had to push Fred to talk.

"No! You are going to tell me where you go every night." George stood and approached his very confused twin. Fred's fists were tightly clenched at his sides but it did not stop George from his interrogation. "Where have you been?" George's voice sounded like an angry growl.

"It's none of your business!" Fred shouted defensively. George had never seen him this upset. George felt the impact before he even realized what was going on. There was a sharp stinging sensation across his left cheek. Fred had hit him.

There was only silence for a moment while the twins stared at each other. George was shocked and hurt by Fred's actions. Fred was the first to move. Without a word he stormed towards the door and slammed it behind him. George still stood in the middle of the room, staring blankly at the bedroom door. Had that really just happened?
