- First Chapter -

Overwhelmed by the malign power of the shadows, Ursula was helpless to do anything but watch as the riders carried Ninian away. The shamans closed on her as the dark energies pulsing in their hands grew and grew, until darkness consumed everything.

Ursula awoke with a start, her heart pounding painfully in her chest. "Wh-where am I?" she asked, half-expecting an answer from whoever had brought her here. Instead, she heard sounds: that of a heavy object - like a hammer, maybe - hitting the ground, followed by a soft noise she couldn't identify, and a voice. She couldn't make out the words, but it stopped just before she heard the unmistakable 'thud' of a body collapsing onto grass.

Moments later, a girl entered, covered in blood but looking pleased. "Oh, you're awake. I found you unconscious on the plains. I am Lyn, of the Lorca. Who are you? Can you remember your name?"

"So, you were separated from your friend, the shrine priestess Ninian," Lyn said slowly, as if she wanted confirmation. "And now you have to find her before something bad happens to her?"

Ursula nodded as she headed for the door. "I'll have to start now if I can hope to even catch up to her."

"Would you allow me to travel with you? My mother and my father...died six months ago," Lyn explained. "My people - the Lorca - they don't...I'm the last of my tribe. Bandits attacked, and...they killed so many people." She dissolved into tears.

Ursula put an arm around her. "I'm sorry, Just...please, don't cry. If it will make you feel better, you may travel with me. We can look for Ninian together."

Lyn was ecstatic. "Really? That's wonderful! Thank you! We'll be better off working together, I know it."

Somehow, it looks kind of short...
By the way, suggestions are welcome. If you want to give me any.

And...I'm sorry if any of the characters (those that appear in future chapters included) are out-of-character. It's mostly so they can fit the roles I've forced upon them, but also because some of these characters don't do or say very much (Ursula, for one...Kishuna, for another).
