That Kind of Guy

Trey smiles when he fights. It starts out small. Some guy says something stupid, gives him a hard time, says "Atwood" like it means something, and Trey goes off.

And the smile gets bigger.

Once he punched a guy's head into a wall; paint, plaster, drywall. Through the dust and blood you could see the wooden frame in the hole.

Trey was smiling like a shark.

No one learns, though. They make a crack, he smiles, and they wake up on the floor wondering what the hell happened.

He's that kind of guy.

Girls love Trey. There's something about him that reaches into a girl, draws her in. Even the ones who should know better can't help themselves. He says, "I love you," and "I'd never cheat," and "Of course I'm staying." And none of it is true. Trey knows it and the girls know it, but in Chino, sometimes you just need to hear the words.

When it ends, there are no hurt feelings. Everyone knew what they were getting into, after all. The next time they meet it will be hard, but weeks or months later, 6they'll meet again, and they might hook-up, and it'll be nice. Familiar. And it won't mean anything, but that's okay.

He's that kind of guy.

Trey's smart, and he's quiet. Gets that from the Atwood blood. He knows how to survive, in and out of jail, because he can read people. He knows what makes them tick. He can tell when a girl is just aching for it, and he can see a guy's tell from fifteen feet away. Made some good money off that one, too.

He got through juvie that way, too. Keep your head down, keep your mouth shut, watch everyone. Act tough enough to be left alone, but not too tough, or you have the guard on your ass. If a VIP comes through, smile.

Just under two years for stealing a car and possession of an unregistered gun and narcotics, and he got out on "Good Behavior".

He's that kind of guy.
