Faces trouble Cosette in her sleep.
She does not know who the faces belong to, only that they frighten her. A man's face, evil smirk aglow; a knotted woman's face.
Tonight, Cosette sees the faces of two girls. These she sees more often than any face. These haunt her most frequently.
Her coverlet tangles around her as she begins to thrash. It becomes a chain.
The faces!
Cosette begins to sweat.
She is aware of the coverlet, vaguely. It keeps her from escaping the two faces.
She is trapped. She begins to moan.
She will not be safe until morning.
