A/N: Okay, so the combat drone saved my Insanity Shepard's butt SO many times in Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition that I wrote it a literal poem (this is not it). I started joking around with my friend and one of my readers that my Insanity Shepard, Evangeline, could have a synthetic-organic love story months before Joker and EDI, she adores her combat drone so much, and that I was considering writing the combat drone's journey to sentience so that it could return her love. And one of my readers said, in effect, "Well, why don't you?"
Gee, thanks, Barbara. The idea got into my head, dug in, and wouldn't let go. So the other day, I sat down and wrote a plotline for Shepard's combat drone's journey to sentience, and what came out was not an adorable crack love story about Engineer Shepard and her combat drone but an idea for a dark, philosophical, deeply tragic, and formally experimental fic. Part poetry, part prose, part stream-of-consciousness, part dialogue, with multiple POVs and a tight focus on the experiences of the synthetic lifeforms and emerging synthetic lifeforms on Normandy in ME2 and 3.
I've never written anything like this before, but I've done some research, and I don't think anyone else has either, and I think it has the potential to be really, really good. Updates will be whenever the heck I have something for you, because I'm writing two other fics and an original novel, and everything in my life outside of ficdom is currently up in the air.
For those of you who've read or are reading my other Mass Effect fics, this is NOT Beth Shepard's universe, and therefore not the Sometimes Grace universe. Entirely different Shepard here. It's mostly irrelevant to the experience of the combat drone, but just so you know.
I hope you guys don't totally hate this.
