Summary: A one-sided love affair hurts... 250 word E/W snippet.
Touching Will was different from the accidental touches she had shared with Jack. Jack would laugh and stretch back for inspection like a lazy cat in front of the hearth, a carefully chosen phrase skipping across his forked tongue, making her blush and stutter indignantly. Will would give her a slightly disapproving look and awkwardly hold her hand.
Elizabeth was sure she loved Will, but when she would try to kiss him, he would look everywhere but at her and his cheeks would become blotchy.
"I love you," she would smile and say, pushing back his hair just as she had done the day they first met.
"I love you too," would be his reply, with a flashing smile she had longed to see and a peck on the cheek she had longed to feel; but now, both were slowly breaking her heart.
One real kiss, an engagement, and then nothing but uncomfortable, painfully strained conversation and fleeting, obligatory glances.
The postponement of their wedding hadn't been surprising, but it still hurt.
"Just a month or two," Will promised, holding her hands, his eyes locking with hers for the first time in weeks.
"All right," she said with a watery smile and a nod. She swallowed the lump in her throat and prayed that she could hold back the tears that were threatening to fall. "I love you," she ventured.
He smiled and covered her mouth with his.
It wasn't until later that she realized he hadn't returned the sentiment.
