Sometimes

Sometimes he loved her beyond all reason or logic, beyond everything. It could be all consuming, creeping up on him at the strangest moments, taking him in its embrace and squeezing the life out of him.

Sometimes he could glimpse her smile, her hair, her slender hands working, and his heart would thud, almost causing him to explode. Killing him softly with his depth of feeling.

Sometimes they would touch and spark, the electricity making goosebumps rise on his flesh and his hairs stand on end. He would ache all over from his desire for her. He wanted her: to kiss her, caress her, embrace her, take her, seduce her, and make love to her.

Sometimes he would settle for being with her, in comfortable silence, side by side; in animated conversation; in the same room; inside the bowels of the same mountain; on the same planet. Anywhere, anytime, any moment. He cherished them.

Sometimes he wished he could find the words to tell her; whisper sweet nothings, and sweet somethings, in her ear. Utter some meaningful and profound words to impress her or crack a joke to make her laugh. There was so much he yearned to say, and too much he couldn't speak of.

Sometimes his silence was eloquent, stating those forbidden and unutterable things. A smile, a nod of the head, a raised eyebrow, or a gesture. Those deep brown eyes would speak for him; sadness, gaiety, love, pain and torment. It was all reflected there for those who chose to see.

Sometimes she caused him great pain and anguish. When she was upset, angry, hurting or injured. Her reaction to the loss of a friend, or dispassion towards an enemy. He wanted to offer comfort and support, but was unable, incapable or both. He would veil those expressive eyes; suppress his sorrow, sympathy and empathy. He could rarely show these things to her. That saddened him.

Sometimes she caused him great joy. When she laughed with him, admired what she saw as his strength or bravery, showed affection, or became his friend rather than his colleague. They might exchange glances; a secret shared, a mutual feeling, a hope. He remembered those moments when he was alone or lonely. That comforted him.

Sometimes she was simply there and it was enough.

Sometimes she wasn't there and he felt empty.

Sometimes he wished…

But wishes are only dreams and, sometimes, nightmares. Both are neither real nor true. Both are products of the imagination, a sometimes-fevered brain.

Nevertheless, he wished…

And, sometimes, wishes come true.
