Prologue

The End Of The Past

Surrounded by darkness, the battle of blood and fire was over. The planet was spared but a life was taken. The group stood on the battle field looking beyond what they thought was 'no mans land'. The distant smoke trailed into the sky, the sounds of men became quiet, and there was nothing left.

"I don't get it" cried Gene; he slowly fell to his knees in despair. His black suite had been torn to shreds from the battle; his face covered in blood and cuts, his mind was all confused. "This wasn't supposed to happen," Gene whispered to himself. He buried his blooded face into his hands in grief. "You fucking bastards, you weren't supposed to take her!" Gene screamed as he looked up to the sun-setting sky.

"So, she's dead, what's the big deal?" A scuffed up lady appeared from the distance. She was dressed in a torn blue top that was more or less covering her and tight worn out black jeans. She approached the angry red head who was kneeling on the floor and walked right pasted him as if she didn't have a care in the world.

"How… how can you say that?" A short spiky haired boy said quietly as the cold hearted woman walked past him. "TELL ME!" He bellowed but she just kept on walking. He clenched his fist in fury and went to lunge at her; however, he was stopped by a firm grip on his shoulder. "Jim…don't…there's no point," a hollow voice said to him. Jim turned around knowing that it was his friend and buried his head into his firm chest. Gene subconsciously put his hand on the short boy's head as comfort.

"There's no point staying here you know," The half-clothed girl said, her voice held no emotion. "There are always wars here; this planet is a battle ground. You fight the good fight, and then you go home." Gene watched her fade in the distance, her slender body fading away into the darkness and shadows. She never looked back; not once.

"C'mon Jim, let's go," Gene tore the little guy away from him and started to walk towards his bright red ship.

"THAT'S IT!" Gene was shocked at the boy's outburst. "THAT'S ALL YOU GOING TO DO!" A deep rage was beginning to surface in the little mite; his anger was the only emotion he could feel. "YOU ARE SUCH A BASTARD!" he shouted at Gene. The short porcupine fell to his knees. "Melfina's gone and that's all you are going to do?" Jim turned to look Gene in the eyes but was met with the sight of his back. Gene was desperately trying to hold back his tears. He needed to be strong for both himself and Jim.

"Do you think Melfina would want us to be like this? C'mon lets go." his voice felt soft to Jim's ears. The short boy rose to his feet and began to follow Gene back to the Outlaw Star.

"Gene, where are we going?" Jim said as he caught up with his tall friend.

"Home." Gene responded. No comment dared to come out of Jim's mouth; he was shocked that Gene was going home. But in a way he knew that he was right, going home seemed like the right thing to do.
