A Fool's Holiday

Great. It's Valentine's Day again.

Another one of those god-awful, trumped-up holidays - a gimmick to get people to spend money they don't have on things they don't want just to be with partners they've already got. A day idiots part with hard-earned cash to buy flowers and chocolate in hopes of getting laid.

Valentine's Day sucks. Zack had it right when he called love 'phoney sentimentality'. Love sucks. It sucked the first time 'cuz - let's face it - things just never work out for me, and the Logan love-bug dealio was just cramping my style... And it bites big this time 'round too. 'Cuz this time I'm fighting it.

I wonder what Alec thinks of the holiday; whether its a big sham or a special time to declare your undying love, blah blah woof woof.

Figures I had to fall for the one I didn't want. Or was it the one I always wanted. Who knows? Who cares? Its not like it'll happen anyway.

I wonder what White's doin' right about now? Sitting down to dinner with Otto, reading sonnets and toasting their partnership? And Logan. Pasta and pre-Pulse wine with Asha? Candlelit dinner for two that's all talk and no action?

I wonder what Zack would make of the day? What he's doing on the farm, if he has a girlfriend - if he fell for the 'phoney sentimentality' we all succumb to somehow.

This blows. Everyone's hooked up for the night, gettin' cozy with the honeys and the hotties, and me, standing up on top of the Space Needle freezing my lonely ass off and thinking about what a waste it all is.

Strange though, 'cuz Alec must've thought the same. He's here. Weirder even, 'cuz he's starin' at me all funny.

Alec removed his hands from behind his back and shoved a single red rose and a box of chocolate wrapped in red ribbon in my face.

"These are for you," he said with a shy smile.

My heart skipped a beat. Alec bought me flowers and candy?

"What for?" I was struggling to understand.

"It's Valentine's Day, Maxie. Y'know, when a guy gives the girl he likes flowers and chocolate and in return the guy gets some hot monkey lovin'?" his eyes twinkled and he winked suggestively at me.

For a moment there I wanted to punch his lights out and wipe the damn smirk off his face. That boy sure had a way of pushin' all the wrong buttons! But his reply was playin' havoc with my heart.

So I did something that surprised even me. I kissed him.

And he kissed me back.

He pulled away after a while and reached out to stroke my cheek. "Happy Valentine's Day, Maxie."

Maybe this holiday doesn't suck after all. "Happy Valentine's Day, Alec."
