Little White Lies
I heard him lie day after day. In the mess tent, in the Officers Club, to men like me.
"How do I know she still loves me? I mean, I've read her letters. But words don't mean anything without actions, do they? She might say one thing and do another."
He'd lean closer, struggling to catch the words. I saw him put down his Bible, with its empty promises; the rules by which he'd lived his life. "You must have faith, my son. Always have faith."
I heard him lie day after day, which is more than he could now.
