Here we are at Chapter 4. Fuyumi begins he trek to the big city with the Crystalgloves, with plenty of interesting events waiting for her. I do not own Code Vein or Skeleton Knight. They belong to their respective owners. I only own my OCs. Here's chapter 4. Enjoy.

Chapter 4: Crystalglove City

Just as Eleonora said, everyone heads out early to begin their journey back to Crystalglove city. Fuyumi had a wonderful sleep in the bed they provided, and the food was delicious. Even if she wasn't too fond of most nobles, they certainly lived big. That's money for you. They head out in the same carriage as before, but with a new contingent of guards and Ser Conrad leading the group. Fuyumi was going to take a horse as well, but Emilia was surprisingly adamant that she stay in the carriage with them (for protection of course, was Emilia's argument). They begin their journey to Crystalglove, which was northeast from Lumiere town. Along the way, the Crystalgloves were hoping to learn more about Fuyumi.

"Lady Fuyumi, if I may ask, what brings you to the Kingdom of Anatolia?" Eleonora asks.

"Yep, I figured they'd ask about me. I'm not exactly normal. Luckily, I already thought of a cover story," Fuyumi thinks before turning to them. "A rite of courage and cowardice," she replies.

"A rite of courage and cowardice?" Emilia looks curious.

"My people are a rather reclusive bunch, preferring to stay out of the affairs of other nations, lest they cause us issues. However, part of my people's traditions, one of the most important, is the rite of courage and cowardice. When young ones reach a certain age, they much venture out into the world to learn and to grow. Many of my people are warriors by tradition; I am no exception. The time simply came for me to venture out for my rite," Fuyumi explains.

"How long must you venture forth on such a journey?" Eleonora asks.

"There is no set time, honestly. It can take years before one finishes this task and returns home. Some choose to remain away from home, while others... don't live long enough to see it. It all depends. It is said that when the time to return home comes, the one performing the rite will know it. I've just begun mine, so it will be a long time before that happens," Fuyumi says.

"So, you'll be here for a while?" Emilia asks, smiling.

"Yes, that's the plan. I have much exploring to do, knowledge to seek, and skills to improve on," Fuyumi nods, but this just makes Emilia's eyes sparkle and her smile bigger.

"I see, and that's why you're working as a mercenary. It offers you the perfect way of travelling, combat experience, and learning new things. If it weren't for your appearance, I'd say it's perfect," Eleonora says.

"My appearance? I admit I don't look like a common mercenary, but am I that bad?" Fuyumi asks, though she already knows why.

"Quite the opposite really," they look out the window of the carriage as Ser Conrad rides next to them. "Anyone who sees you would immediately think you a noble lady and swoon over you. I mean, some of the men last night wouldn't stop talking about you," Conrad notes.

"Oh, and what things did they say, Ser Knight?" Fuyumi asks, smirking.

"Only that you might be an apostle of the Goddess, or a high-ranking lady from a faraway land, or even a fairy of legends. Some of them were even trying to fight each other for the right to ask for your hand in marriage, heh-heh. Though, I took control of them to keep them in line. We have more important things to focus on right now," Conrad chuckles.

Fuyumi sighs, "Thank you for that, Ser Conrad. I have no interest in marrying any man. Though, I'm curious, aren't you going to take a shot at me?"

"Oh no, I am happily married, with my wife waiting for me back in Crystalglove city. I may be a knight, but I would never wish to incur her wrath by doing something like that," Conrad waves it off.

"I see. That explains things... Lady Emilia?" Fuyumi finds the girl staring at her again.

Emilia realizes her mistake, "My apologies, I was just wondering about your homeland. Do a lot of women there become warriors too? Or can use magic without chants?"

"There are women who are warriors. As for the magic... as far as I know, I'm the only one. There may have been others in the past, or some that I simply don't know about, but I can't say for sure," Fuyumi explains. "Yeah, I might've messed up with my blood gifts there. Too late for regrets now."

"Hmm, it's just that throughout the land, there has never been any records, or even stories of someone who can use magic without chants. Forgive us if we pried too much, but we are curious," Eleonora says.

"And cautious," Fuyumi figures it out, surprising Eleonora. "I understand. You are right to be wary, especially given recent events. Even I do not know the secret of why I have such gifts. My bloodline, the fruits of my training, or something else. I cannot say. I simply use it when the need arises. And the need arose when it came to protecting you and Emilia, Lady Eleonora,"

Eleonora smiles, "Well, I think that's enough about looking into your past. It wouldn't be fair if we didn't do the same for you,"

For a while, Eleonora and Emilia explained to Fuyumi the Kingdom of Anatolia, a large kingdom set in the eastern center of the continent of Theoma. To the northwest is the Graylon Empire, while south of that is the Theodosia Conclave. North and south of Anatolia is the Matriox Republic and the Liniark kingdom, which are allies with Anatolia. East of Anatolia are a series of smaller nations known as the Dragon Alliance, which are commonly allied together to make up for their lack of territorial size. There are unclaimed lands in a few other spots, which remain as such due to the areas being too dangerous for settlement, as well as several islands scattered around the continent. In Anatolia, there is the royal family that rules, along with nobles who control their own districts and cities. As a ducal family, Eleonora's family is in charge of one of the largest cities in the kingdom, and one of the largest territories. Her husband, Duke Joseph Matone von Crystalglove, heads the duchy. Eleonora explained that Joseph's a family has governed the territory for several generations, with her husband being the current head of the family. The conversation was very informative and helpful for Fuyumi.

Considering prior events, they sped up their progress to Crystalglove and managed to get there the next day. Fuyumi was in slight awe at the city. It had high stone walls and watchtowers for defense, and was much larger than Lumiere town. Like in town, there were people coming and going from the city. When they reached the large steel gates, the guards let them in when they saw who it was. Fuyumi saw the city from the carriage window. People were bustling about, stores and stalls were selling their products, and other businesses were going about their day.

"It's grand, isn't it," Eleonora notes.

"It certainly has its flare," Fuyumi notes. She then notices a large building down the path they were taking. "Is that..."

"Yes, that manor is our home. We'll arrive shortly. I'm sure my husband will be waiting for us, most likely beside himself. I'll explain things to him; don't worry," Eleonora says.

They reach the manor, finding it five stories high, with white walls, blue roofs, and a large number of windows. The front courtyard is vast, with a fabulous garden. Steel gates and stone walls protect the manor. They arrive at the front gates, which open to reveal two rows of maids and male servants all in two lines, ready to receive them. At the end of the procession is a man with short, light-blue hair, a marching mustache, and wearing an outfit that seems like a cross between a noble outfit and a military uniform. The outfit was blue with gold edging, and white pants and black shoes to match. He must be Duke Joseph.

"Welcome home, Duchess Eleonora, Lady Emilia," the servants bow and greet their masters.

Conrad offers a hand to Fuyumi, who comes out first, but she rebuffs him and climbs out herself. She then offers a hand to Emilia, who happily accepts it. Eleonora then comes out, accepting a hand from Conrad.

"Eleonora, Emilia, thank the Goddess that you two are safe," the duke greets his wife and daughter with relief.

Eleonora hugs her husband, "I'm glad to lay my eyes upon you again, my dear. We are truly blessed to reunite, aren't we,"

"Father," Emilia nearly cries when her father hugs her.

"I'm glad you two are safe. When I heard about what happened in your letter, I was about to race here myself before Sebastian helped me calm down," he nods to an older man in a butler outfit and a monocle standing behind him.

"The letter stated they were safe, milord. Suddenly rushing off would only cause undue issues. What matters now is that they have returned. It is truly a blessing to see you two safe and sound, my ladies," Sebastian bows to them.

Joseph then takes notice of Fuyumi standing behind them. He looks to his wife, who nods.

Joseph approaches Fuyumi, "I take it you must be Fuyumi Kusanagi. My wife has already informed me of the situation. I am Due Joseph Matone von Crystalglove. You have my upmost gratitude for saving my beloved family,"

Fuyumi offers a slight bow, "It was nothing, Duke Joseph. I was lucky to by nearby while on a job and lent them my aid. Your family has been most gracious with me since,"

"Then allow me to invite you into my home as one form of thanks. We still have a few things to discuss, and I know my wife promised you compensation for your aid. Come," Joseph turns to leave with his wife.

"Oh no, I couldn't impose on a duke who has reunited with his family. I'm just a mercenary, and a commoner," Fuyumi politely declines.

"A mercenary who has saved the wife and daughter of said duke. I cannot allow this to go unrewarded. It would be disrespectful. Please, come," Joseph retorts.

Emilia walks up to Fuyumi, "Please, Lady Fuyumi. When my father gets like this, it's better to just go along with it. Besides, I would love to show you my home,"

Fuyumi sighs, "Very well, as long as it isn't a bother," and goes with them inside.

The inside of the estate is just as Fuyumi figured it'd be: extravagant, expensive, and full of artwork and fancy furniture. This place probably costs more than she'd make in ten lifetimes back in her old world. As the Duke and his wife escort them, Emilia walks right next to Fuyumi, happily telling her all about her home, her family history, and the city that her father governs. Soon enough, they enter what Fuyumi guessed to be the duke's office. There was an elaborate desk in front of some windows. In the center of the room were two sofas, two eats, and a long table between them all for guests. The parents sit on one sofa, while Fuyumi and Emilia sit on the other. Sebastian and Conrad stand behind the parents while a pair of maids prepare some refreshments. They brought over some tea and sweets, which were quite good in Fuyumi's opinion.

"So, in regard to your reward, we will of course pay you a suitable amount. Don't worry, I won't try to swindle you or anything. My family's lives are more important to me than some coin. My wife informed me you're here, away from your homeland, in a 'rite of courage and cowardice'. A rite of passage with your people. I can trust that you'll be doing more mercenary work as part of this?" Joseph asks.

Fuyumi nods, "Yes. It fits perfectly since my talents are mostly geared towards combat. And it's the perfect profession in pursuit of my rite. I imagine I'll be at it for quite some time,"

Joseph clasps his hands in front of him, "Conrad as informed me that he challenged you to a duel, and lost. That is not an easy feat, considering his skills. That, your abilities, and your status as a mercenary; well... If you don't mind me asking, would you be willing to work for my privately? As a mercenary hired by my house? You will be paid for your services, of course,"

Fuyumi takes a moment to think on it, "You make generous offer, Duke Joseph... however, I must decline," she declines, much to the surprise of the servants, and Emilia who looks a little sad.

The duchess' expression doesn't change, but Joseph seems only more intrigued, "May I inquire as to why, my dear?"

"To work as your exclusive mercenary, Duke Joseph, would mean becoming bound to you and your family. While that would have plenty of perks, there would be some downsides to that well," Fuyumi explains.

"Like what?" Joseph asks with a raised eyebrow.

"It would mean sacrificing something very important to me: my freedom," Fuyumi looks him straight in the eye.

"Your freedom? Forgive me, Fuyumi, but what do you-," Eleonora asks when a new maid enters the room. "What is it?"

"Forgive me for interrupting, Duke Joseph, Milady, but Marquess Deleshante has arrived and wishes to speak with you," the maid looks anxious as she says this.

Duke Joseph lets out a small sigh, "And he just showed up unannounced? He knows better than this. Very well, let him in," the maid bows and leaves the room while Joseph turns back to Fuyumi. "Forgive me, Lady Fuyumi, but it seems we'll have to continue this conversation later. This shouldn't take too long,"

"Is this Marquess a problem?" Fuyumi asks.

"Problem, I wouldn't say so. More like that huge pile of paperwork that you'd rather just disappear off your desk. Marquess Reginald von Deleshante. He's relatively young for a marquess, and that's because he recently inherited his position from his father who passed away due to a sudden illness. I guess you could say that he is very... eccentric. Truth be told, Lumiere town, near where you saved my family, is within his domain," Joseph explains.

Just then, the maid returns, followed by a man with short auburn hair, blue eyes, and wearing a very extravagant white suit with gold touches to it. There were even a few frills on it. The man swept back his hair and offered a dramatic bow.

"It is such a pleasure to see you again, Duke Joseph Matone von Crystalglove. I am so glad you made time in your busy schedule to speak with me," Marquess Reginald greets them.

Fuyumi can certainly see why the duke said he's eccentric.

"Yes, you're right. I am busy. If you gave me an advanced notice, I would've prepared a proper reception for you," Joseph replies, though there was a subtle hint of irritation in his voice.

Reginald looks up to cast his eyes upon Emilia, "Ah, Emilia, my darling, I'm so glad you are safe," he waltzes right up to her, gets down on one knee, takes her hand and plants a kiss on it. "Seeing you unharmed is such a relief. When I heard that you and your mother had been attacked by bandits, in my domain no less, I rushed over with my men to save you. But, you were gone and I later heard that you were safe and on your way back home. That must've been such a frightening experience. Fear not, I, Reginald von Deleshante, vow to make sure that never happens again to you,"

While most women might've swooned over such a display, Emilia actually feels a little uncomfortable by his demeanor and politely retracts her hand.

"I am thankful for your kind words, Lord Reginald, but there is no worry. Thankfully, Lady Fuyumi Kusanagi here arrived just in time to save my mother and I from the bandits that attacked us," Emilia gestures to Fuyumi sitting next to her. "She has been kind enough to serve as our bodyguard until we returned back home,"

Reginald finally looks at Fuyumi and for a moment, he is mesmerized by her beauty, but moves on quickly enough.

"I see. Well, thank you for protecting my beloved Emilia from those hooligans. Although, Kusanagi, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that name. From what family and homeland do you hale from?" Reginald asks.

"Lady Fuyumi is a commoner from a faraway land. She is here working as a mercenary as part of a rite of passage that is customary for her people, which she said are a clan of warriors," Eleonora explains.

The moment he heard that Fuyumi was a commoner, Reginald appeared to lose interest, "Ah, a common mercenary. Well, thank you again for your aid, mercenary. I'm sure you've already finished your business here, so if you wouldn't mind leaving; we have much to discuss ourselves," he waves her off.

Conrad steps in, "Watch your tone, Lord Reginald. Lady Fuyumi is Lord Joseph's guest, in his home. He decides who leaves and who stays. Need I also remind you that this is the duke's domain, not yours,"

"Now, now, I meant no offense, Ser Conrad. I'm merely pointing out that the duke and I have business to discuss, which concerns both our families. I see no need for a mercenary who only came to collect her reward to be involved in those discussions," Reginald retorts with his hands in the air.

"Lord Reginald, Lady Fuyumi saved my life and the life of my mother. You will not show her such disrespect. Not if you wish to lose mine," Emilia speaks up.

"B-but, my dear Emilia, you must know that mercenaries are just servants-for-hire, and sometimes get involved in dirty business such as fighting monsters. Who knows how much blood she has on her hands? I simply don't wish for their dirty hands to stain your everlasting beauty," Reginald gets dramatic again.

Joseph speaks up, "Ahem. I think that's enough now, Lord Reginald. If you wish to discuss things between our two families, then we may do so, but only at another time after you give me a notice of your coming. For now, I suggest you return to your domain so you can rest. If there were bandits in your domain, then there might be more. I'm sure you do well in hunting the rest down in order to better care for your domain, correct?"

Reginald clicks his tongue, but regains his eccentric demeanor, "I-I see. Very well, then. We will continue this discussion again soon. My dear Emilia, I will miss you dearly. I hope we are able to come together soon. You will be more than welcome in my home," he kisses her hand again and then takes his leave.

Once he's gone, a few of the room's occupants sigh, and even Emilia wipes her hand with a handkerchief.

"When you said eccentric, I wasn't sure if you meant annoying or just down-right distasteful," Fuyumi notes to the duke.

The duke sighs, "My deepest apologies, Lady Fuyumi. I can assure you that not all nobles in our kingdom are like that,"

"I'm sure. If you don't mind me asking, what was his deal with Emilia before? And what was he saying about 'business between your families'?" Fuyumi asks.

"My daughter has reached marriageable age, and has thus ben receiving such proposals from several noble families. Since she is the daughter of a duke, not every noble family in our kingdom can ask for her hand. However, for those who can, some are more... persistent than others. Lord Reginald has asked for Emilia's hand in marriage, but we haven't agreed yet, nor have we disagreed. It's not something to be rushed," Joseph explains, though Fuyumi notices the solemn look in Emilia's eyes.

"Well, I'm sure you're all wishing to reconnect after recent events, So I'll take my leave for now," Fuyumi stands to leave.

"You're leaving? Won't you stay a while longer?" Emilia asks.

"Yes, your welcome to stay here for night," Joseph offers.

"I'm afraid I cannot. But, don't worry, I'll be in the city. I've never been here before, so I'd like to check it out first, take some jobs too. I'll be nearby if you need help or want to talk," Fuyumi says.

"I see. Very well, until then. Sebastian, please escort Lady Fuyumi out," Joseph asks while Sebastian responds with a polite bow.

After receiving her reward for her bodyguard duty, Fuyumi leaves the manor with Emilia and Sebastian bidding her goodbye. Up in his office, Joseph watches her leave.

"Is something on your mind, dear?" Eleonora walks up behind him.

"Sorry, it's just... what she said before, when I asked her why she declined my offer to work for the family. She said doing so would mean sacrificing her freedom. I never intended on treating her like a slave if that's what she meant.

"I'm sure she knew that. I believe that she meant that working for us would mean being bound to us, to our way of life. Serving a noble family may seem like a dream to some, but not so much to others. She's a mercenary; I think that gives us our answer. She can go where she wants, sleep when she wants, and walk her own path. She wouldn't be able to do so if she worked for us exclusively," Eleonora says.

"Her freedom. I guess I can't see things the way she and you see them. Forgive me," Joseph looks back out the window.

Eleonora giggles, "Heh-heh, don't worry too much about it,"

"Sir, how did it go?" a servant asks Marquess Deleshante in his carriage on his way back to his domain.

"Poorly. We found the reason why the bandits failed at the very least. Some damn commoner mercenary. She was quite the looker, but not quite like my dear Emilia. I hired those bandits to capture her, and then I would soon come in and save her. She would surely fall for me, and then I'd be able to get her hand in marriage, and her family's domain would be mine. But now, that plan is all ruined," Reginald groans.

"So, what should we do, sir?" the servant asks.

"We'll just have to try things a little differently. I don't know who that mercenary is, but she was certainly beautiful. I wouldn't mind making her my mistress while Emilia is my wife. We'll just have to adjust thing a little bit. Soon, it will all be mine," Reginald shows a greedy grin.

And that's the chapter. Fuyumi meets Emilia's father as she reaches Crystalglove city. While she's made a few news friends now, she's also made a new enemy. Things are about to get interesting for Fuyumi. What else awaits her on this journey? Until then, please Read and Review.
