Chrissy's dorm room was small but comfortable. There was a living area that opened straight into a kitchenette. A bathroom just inside the entrance to the room. And then a large bedroom with two beds, one on each half of the room.
Chrissy had gotten to campus as early as possible to get a head start on the crowds of incoming students. She'd had time to make her twin bed with the comfy lavender bedding she'd brought. She'd hung her clothes in her half of the closet and unloaded her toiletries into one half of the bathroom cabinet. She even brought curtains to hang, hoping her roommate wouldn't mind.
She was sticking her Polaroids of her and Eddie onto the mirror she'd brought with her when she heard footsteps approaching behind her.
"You must be Chrissy!" A girl's voice exclaimed.
Chrissy turned to see the girl who must be her roommate. She was Chrissy's height. Soft brown waves of hair framed her lovely face. Green eyes stood out above a nose dusted in freckles. She wore high waisted jeans and a Madonna tshirt, a bright pink overnight bag slung over her shoulder. She was smiling brightly at Chrissy who automatically smiled back.
"I am! I'm sorry, I don't know your name…"
The girl waved her comment off, unbothered.
"No worries! I pestered student housing to know who my roommate was. I wanted to bring a housewarming present…well, dorm warming present I guess."
She dug into the bag and pulled out a white ceramic mug with a large letter C in pretty black font.
"Oh my gosh, that's so sweet!" Chrissy accepted the mug from her with a smile.
"My name is Evelyn, by the way. Evelyn Smith. But you can call me Evie!" She pulled a second mug from her bag with a fancy E on it. Chrissy giggled. She could tell she was going to like Evie. She was kind and bubbly.
"It's nice to meet you Evie. I hope you don't mind, I just kinda picked a bed."
"No worries! I'm not picky!" Evie said as she sat her bag down on the opposite bed.
"I have to say I'm relieved. I was worried about having a roommate. I'm not very picky myself, but I didn't know what kind of roommate to expect." Chrissy admitted.
"For sure! I had the same worries. But I'm thinking you and I are gonna get along just fine!"
Chrissy nodded in agreement.
She helped Evie unpack. They kept up a steady stream of conversation as they went. Evie told Chrissy how she was majoring in Education with plans to be a music teacher. She had a scholarship to the university through band and played the flute. She was an only child like Chrissy, joking that when she learned to talk her parents must have not wanted to risk another - she was more than enough. It was true, Chrissy saw, that Evie did in fact enjoy talking. But it wasn't a bother. She had plenty to talk about without feeling the need to fill any silence.
Chrissy told Evie how she was going to major in Psychology to be a school counselor. Evie joked that maybe they'd end up working at the same school one day.
"Oh my gosh, is this your boyfriend?" Chrissy looked up to where Evie was inspecting her Polaroids.
She smiled. "It is. That's Eddie."
"He's dreamy!"
"I think so too, but you're the first person I've heard call him that." Chrissy said with a laugh.
"People at your high school didn't think he was cute??" Evie was in genuine disbelief.
"Oh Eddie is going to like you!" Chrissy teased. "No, he was considered the school 'freak' actually. "
Evie nodded as if in understanding. "I see, you had a bunch of preppy kids I bet. My high school had lots of guys into the metal scene."
"Wow . . . it's a shame we didn't. Eddie never let it bother him though. He won't change who he is for others. He's all about being unapologetically yourself."
"I like that." Evie said.
"Yeah, me too."
Chrissy gazed at the picture of the two of them at prom. She missed Eddie already and it had only been one day.
She couldn't wait to talk to him about his day, ask about what he learned and how work went. And she couldn't wait to tell him about hers. They'd probably have to make due with phone calls until they figured out their new routines - Chrissy with her classes and Eddie with trade school and work. And she would spend weekends with him of course; even with her dad's promise to change, Chrissy wasn't quite ready to run home any time soon.

My chapters may not come as quick as before. Upcoming holidays have me busy, plus I'm still trying to figure out how to wrap up my last few chapters.
I hope anyone reading this enjoys! I'm no author, but I enjoy making stories from time to time. I'll try to update soon! :)
