Self isolating Nick the sylveon slams his head into his desk, another failure. He looks back at his attempted portal generator, the one that brought the whole world into chaos. He had spent his time trying to find a way to reverse his mistake, but he wasn't even 100% sure where to start. Should he repair the machine, would that even help, sure it started the rift issue, but that doesn't mean it can fix this, plus even if it could reverse this, it was only built to close the portals it made, and given how it's broken, but the rifts still appear, making it quite debatable that the portal generator MADE them itself, plus when it started this he had hacked into the short range teleportation complexes, the teleportation complexes that are now destroyed, even if his machine could fix this without that world wide system it likely wouldn't have the range to really make a difference. Nick slumps to the ground, these stupid things were so hard to study, appearing and disappearing at seemly random and they could bring anything with them or take something nearby, one time he even almost got burned by lava as the rift lead to AN EROUPTING VOLCANO. Needless to say, he didn't make any progress with that rift.
Nick is also emotionally conflicted, no one other than him knows where this all came from, and that is a huge cause of this bloody war. He knows the right thing to do is to admit to his government what happened, but …he's too scared, he knows they would kill him if he admitted, and he doesn't even know if it would have any effect, they might not believe him, and even if they did they might just cover it up. He just couldn't bring himself to admit to his mistake till he had some kind of solution.
"Control has to be possible" he says to himself, "if it wasn't then those negating devices wouldn't exist, but right now they would never work to scale, extremely expensive and with barely any range." Nick gets up and paces around considering what he could possibly do. He can't give up, there has to be a way. Some way to stop this. Some way he can fix everything. Unless… what if he is looking at this all wrong. Those old legends, what if they aren't just legends, what if they are actually history. He remembers reading them as a child. The humans from the stories are oddly similar to the humans appearing now, maybe he really can't fix this, maybe the worlds were already connected and he just broke the barrier, and it may simply not be repairable. What if he is looking at this all wrong. What if he can't fix this in the way he is thinking of. Maybe he can't separate the 2 universes or return to the Status quo. But maybe he doesn't need to, maybe he can make this work even with the rifts. He knows this is probably stupid, and even if he is right he probably can't fix it, but he is going to try anyway.
