Chapter 4

Throughout the many years of being in this world. Benjamin Wilum wished to help advance the people. However, through all his time as a Grandmaster and a leader he had hardly any time to properly educate the people.

Politics, ignorance, and even the lack of resources was always a present concern when he would bring up new ideas or philosophical thoughts. However, there was one shining advancement that always caused him to smile.

The Thopter, an aerial vehicle in a bug like design. They had been created and manufactured in Zaofu by Toph's youngest daughters' husband. The inventor was able to revolutionize many elements within the day-to-day life within the people of this world. Now, they were armed with a great piece of technological might.

Most 'thopters were winged vessels that were capable of flight through jet propulsion, as well as by mimicking the movements of insects. While the jets were the primary propulsion system, the wings assisted in maintaining altitude, as well as maneuvered the vessels.

Ben and Haru were within the thopter as they flew through the night sky. Hearing the thumping of rain, and the dreadful sound of thunder stream across the horizon.

Ben sighed. His hand going to his face as he tried to wipe away the fatigue that decorated his features. Ty Lee, Meetra, and Isaac should've still been asleep by now…and he hoped to be back by morning.

"Haru, why did you have to get me in the middle of the night?"

Haru looked back at him, and he saw the features of his old friend, his first apprentice. Haru's once dark brown hair was now a withered steel grey. His youthful features were now wrinkled with wrinkles and the tire of old age…he really did look the part of the Jedi Master.

However, he smiled. And he saw that once youthful, ambitious, and feverishly determined youth that would eventually become a great Jedi Master.

Haru sighed. "You know why, Benji," He spoke slyly, however an instant later his voice went cold and serious. "There is something strange happening. People at the temple are saying that they feel something…and some of the more connected members have even slipped into trances."

"Trances?" Ben repeated.

Haru nodded. "It's like they've slipped into comas. But from what I've been told on the radio that they have been waking up…"

Ben combed through his locks of hair. Wrapping his arms around himself as he tried to think, this was strange.

"Do you think the spirit of Lord Ruin has come back?" Ben questioned.

However, Haru shook his head. "No, Ben," He answered. "Everyone knows what the taint of the darkness is…especially the feeling of a long dead Sith Lord."

Haru's features steeled. This time he was the one ironing his features of the fatigue that generated along them. "Something is strange, Ben. I just don't like it…I feel like something big is going to happen and we must be ready for it."

Ben stared at his friend; he knew that Haru did not speak empty threats. If he felt that something big was going to happen, then something was going to happen. Ben steeled himself as he took a seat next to him, clipping on the seatbelt as he saw them leave the frontier of the city, and once again reenter Republic City.

He saw the blistering lights that generated along the high rises and buildings. Like stars within the sky, they illuminated throughout the darkness as the storm was only rumbling far harsher and only growing worse.

"So…" Haru etched the word. Turning towards Ben as he rose his hand. "How did things go with Meetra?"

Ben let out a loud groan as Haru only chuckled to himself. "Woah, that bad…"

"Yep," He murmured. "Meetra told Ty Lee that she hated her. You know that even with all that Jedi wisdom and experience, Ty Lee was really taken aback and messed up to hear that."

"I bet." Haru responded.

Ben moved up on his seat. "Did you and Kya ever deal with that?"

Haru held himself back, then…he busted into laughter. The ship taking a turn as he murmured a swear and brought them back on course.

"Benjamin, you have no idea," He chuckled to himself. "Man, that girl's teenage years was just really something…Kya wanted her to go off to college, but she wanted to always be an author. I would hear them throw insult and remark at each other every time I got back from the temple…"

Haru's smile only enlarged as the warm memories coursed through him. Ben only smiled at his friend as he relaxed within the chair, taking in the strange comradery that fathers could only understand.

"She went to college to become a writer, and then she met Brandon who was interested in making films. Kya wanted her to be anything else…and Ben, she was infuriated when she brought a film maker home," He pointed towards Ben with a smirk. "You were there that day…when she announced that she was pregnant with twins and that they secretly got married!"

Ben busted into laughter. Slapping his thigh as he nearly keeled over with tears going down his cheek from the laughter that echoed from his lips. Aiming his own finger at his old friend. "Fuck, I remember that," He bellowed. "Kya passed out and Katara had to use her water bending flask to snap her awake."

"Kya told me that the water was horrible, she got pink eye from that Ben!"

They only laughed harder. "Of course, she did…you were with us on the journey. Katara never cleaned that fucking dirty thing. When we were in the desert, we had to drink that!"

The laughter echoed for a couple of minutes. Each man being consumed by the old memories of happier times. It was almost like they were back within those moments of bliss. Old men who were enjoying their lives with their families.

Haru's features tightened suddenly, directing his attention back to piloting the thopter. He slowly shook his head as he wiped the tears away. However, Ben could feel it through the force. He could feel the happiness, the pride, and the love. However, mingled within all those positive emotions was arrogance, sadness, and regret.

"I never told Kya to go easy on her. She was her own person, and she should've been able to live the life she wanted. When she told me that she held no interest in being a Jedi, even though she inherited my potential. I respected this decision, but Kya always tried to pressure her…always tried to change her into what she wanted. Why didn't I say anything back then, why?"

Ben parted his lips to speak, but he knew not too…stopping himself as he realized that his friend did not need someone to speak to, but rather someone to listen.

"I didn't even realize that she slowly started to distance herself from us," A forced chuckle arose from him, wiping a lone tear that escaped his eyes. "I wasn't even that busy. She would invite me to the birthdays, dinners, and to talk…but why didn't I realize that she was trying to leave us. That she was sick of dealing with an overbearing mother, and a father that was too busy with pulling a blanket over his eyes."

Haru slowly shook his head. His knuckles growing white from how harshly he gripped the controller of the thopter. "Then, the accident…" His lips quivered. His eyes shaking, but he forced himself to speak. "Fucking shit. Why…they were so young and then the twins were orphaned, and me and her were given the opportunity to parent again."

Ben nodded, slowly speaking. "That's why Zana and Hysa were raised with all that freedom to become who they want."

Haru nodded, vigorously as he wiped his eyes. "I may be a fool, Ben. But I won't make the same damned mistake twice, and Kya as well worked to change. But she felt it too…the loss, and I know her guilt is far greater than mine."

Haru fixated on Ben with such a stare he felt his being slowly grow cold. "I know, I am not Meetra's father and what you guys do with your children is not my business, but Ben," He put a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Don't make the same mistake Kya and I made. She'll only grow to despise you."

Ben nodded, taking in the lesson as he stared at his friend. Haru and his wife were not bad people…they had made a critical mistake within raising their daughter, but luckily they learned from there mistake and vowed to never repeat it again.

Ben sighed. "Well, you will be glad to know that Ty Lee and I did agree to let Meetra start her formal Jedi training," he said. Seeing the outline of Haru's smile. "We didn't tell her yet, and we decided to wait till morning. It was honestly a horrible idea to send her away to the academy, and Ty Lee wants to apologize for that as well."

Haru was the only one smiling though, Ben only staring outside at the pattering rain that rocked their windshield. "Ben," he spoke his name. "Aren't you happy? Haven't you wanted to formerly train Meetra for a long time now?"

Ben nodded, but he took a deep breath. "I am happy, Haru. But," He hesitated, mulling over the words as he looked to his friend. "Meetra, she said something to me when we were driving home…something that just had me thinking."

"What did she say?"

Ben sighed. "She spoke of how she needed to learn to be a Jedi, that it was her namesake."

It took Haru a couple of seconds to realize it. The old Jedi Master taking his own deep breath as he registered the words. "I think, I get it."

There was an eerie silence before Ben spoke again. "I know there was much controversy within not only the High Council…but with Team Avatar within my decision in keeping my true origins a secret. Even Meetra and Isaac do not know where I truly come from. However, I believed that altering the legends of the great ones would be important for the next generations of Jedi. Having such knowledge is too risky, and within the political and ideological conflicts within this world can turn people against me, and in extension the Jedi Order if they were viewed as "alien" or who knows what else."

Ben took a breath. Racking through what he had said. Throughout his years on this world and reintroducing the Jedi Order and other ideas within this world. He had altered his origins, and legends from the wider galaxy.

Jedi legends, like the legend of Ulic Qel Droma was heavily altered…changed to be more adapted to this world. Likewise, any inventions or ideas that he introduced to the masses were heralded as his own ideas. Sure, it made him feel quite scummy and even he was disgusted with himself. However, he had no idea how the ordinary men would react to such information.

That random men and woman from the stars could come from some black hole with great powers that could shake the fate of this world. That was what Ajunta's Palls first Jedi did, that was what Exar did, and that was what he did. It was a scary thought to realize that one man or woman can change the whole course of the world.

"Haru," Ben spoke. His apprentice's eyes going to him. "Do you think…me and Ty Lee are horrible parents. For what we did to our children?"

Haru's eyes widened as he viciously shook his head in response. However, this only rose a chuckle from Ben's lips.

"I named my first-born daughter, Meetra 'Madelil' Wilum. To some they have even called her Meetra the II regarding the name she was given. I've been told by many people that they are excited to see what she will become," he said. "For my second...my son, Isaac 'Jet' Wilum. Named after Jet, a powerful user of the force. Talented with the blade, a powerful and unique connection to the force, and a great friend…"

Haru nodded. "He was our brother," Haru hesitated. "He would've been a great Jedi. His abilities and skill were great and if he had lived, he would've…"

"…done great things," Ben finished, taking a deep breath as his false arm went to his face. "He would've done great things."

Ben looked to Haru. "Me and Ty Lee fear that we made a grave mistake. The moment that we were officially parents, we already messed up," He fixated on his friend as he spoke the bone chilling words. "Me and Ty Lee placed quite a burden on Meetra, didn't we, by giving her such a name."

The pain was visible on his face as his teeth were clenched. Slowly shaking his head as his false arm covered his features. "I'm afraid that we placed a massive weight on her shoulders. We named her Meetra, as a salute to my old master…a powerful great Jedi, a Master of the Jedi Order that is immortalized within our legends. Did she think that means that I want her to grow up to be a Jedi? Would she think she had to live up to Meetra's reputation?"

Haru took in the information. Letting Ben breath and slowly relax as he readied the question. "Does Meetra know of the truth behind the woman…of her name?" Haru hesitated, gulping silently as he realized that he was drawing on dangerous territory. "Does she know what Meetra did during those wars…of what she did on Malachor V?"

Ben's eyes widened and the answer was already evident.

"Benjamin, I get that you wanted to honor the woman that was like your older sister and your Jedi Master. However, the legend of Meetra Surik is a legend that is filled with many tribulations. You spoke of the light and the greatness of what Meetra accomplished, but what of the…"

"I know, Haru." Benjamin cut off with a glare.

His hand dug into the corners of his face as he realized the grave reality of what him and Ty Lee possibly subjected Meetra and Isaac too.

However, Haru did not stop. "The Legend of Meetra Surik is a great lesson. A tale of Jedi valor, but likewise one of arrogance. She was a knight with a powerful and mystic connection to the force, war criminal and noble knight, the fox, and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a woman. We as Jedi and philosophers realize that we cannot measure the actions of Meetra Surik in the ways of old. Right or wrong, light, or dark. There are far too many variables that have to not only be accounted for but must be assessed to the most finite of details regarding her actions. Some may say she deserved punishment for what she did during the war…likewise many would state that she was the hero that saved it and losing her connection to the force in such a severing and traumatic way would be enough punishment. Can you say she did this out of a sense of justice? Whose justice, then? Remember, we speak now of the great Meetra Surik who ordered a whole planet to be destroyed. Condemning the lives of countless Mandalorian, Republic Soldiers, and Jedi brethren, the same Jedi who denied the conventions of her Jedi training with a wave of the hand, saying merely: "This will end the war. That is reason enough."

Ben absorbed the information. Finally moving away his hand from his face as he emptied a deep breath that came from his parted lips. His heart beating rapidly along his chest as he took in what Haru had told him.

He had just wanted to honor this great woman…but now he put a great and heavy burden on his daughter's shoulder. Hell, she did not even realize the truth behind the legends that her father not only told her, but of the world itself. He believed that she was a hero, but he knew within the hearts of men…many people would have a lot to say if the truth of the great jedi general, Meetra Surik. Was ever revealed.

"I have many memories in regard to Meetra Surik. I can remember the days in which we played outside together, the way she doted on me like she was my older sister, the way she trained and helped me hone my connection to the force," The smile grew along his face, but he realized that all dreams had to end. Taking a deep breath as just as quickly as it appeared, likewise it faded away. "The stuff we did and seen together during the Mandalorian Wars when I was a child…still haunts me as an old man. I know what the world would say about Meetra, but I know deep down that there is a part of her that was within me. That part was what kept me going during the darkest hours within our journey, that part was what kept her tethered to me and reminded me of the journey that I had to walk. Without Meetra, I would've been dead on that island, and Aang would've been killed or worse. Meetra in her own way was one of the pivotal figures that saved the world. That part within me is Meetra's good part…it's not only within me, but within Meetra and Isaac. But, I know the darker parts within her are within me as well. In naming my daughter after her, my first born. I was putting an innocence behind the name. All the good Meetra would eventually do…I could imagine came not only from Meetra, but through me. My Meetra, could in turn redeem what the first did on Malachor V."

Ben took a breather. Running his hands through his hair as he felt close to tears. Feeling a spike of shame course through his gut as he emptied out his feelings to one of his closest friends. Only to be met with the warm glow of his friends smile, silently supporting him as he continued.

"My daughter, Meetra the II. She would be a true Jedi, the redeemer of the Meetra name," Ben gulped. Slowly nodding with his words as he aimed his head at his shoes. "I placed quite a burden on Meetra, didn't I, by giving her such a name."

Haru nodded along with his statement. "Yes, you did," But he rose his hand to stop Ben from interjecting. "She's strong enough to take on the burden of her name. She has you and the rest of the jedi to sustain her and keep her on the straight and narrow."

Haru's grip on his shoulder tightened. "You wanted to do something good for not only your master, but for her. You sought to purge the fears and the darkness of what you inherited from Meetra, by looking at your daughter as someone who will do good…someone who will redeem the name, and once again walk the path of the Jedi."

Ben nodded. "Am I a bad parent, Haru?"

Haru chuckled. "No, Ben," He shook his head. "You and Ty Lee had the proper intentions, and you guys feel guilt over what had happened. I believe, that you are trying to prove under different circumstances that Meetra would have always been remembered as a hero…rather the darkness that shall always linger along her name."

Ben returned his smile as he felt it. A simmering heat rising from his gut as he emptied his breath, he needed to find his calm. Who knows, maybe being back in the temple and working before dropping the bombshell to Meetra would actually do him some good.

Heck, maybe he can even start filing out the paperwork for her to get a room and a proper schedule so she can start as soon as possible. However, his thoughts were broken. Both him and Haru felt it. Like a sudden chill that rode along their spine, wrapping, contorting and swallowing them within the tumult of raw force power that echoed…

A powerful blast. Not physical, not like a bomb or some man-made object. Something lingering between the force and the spirit world as all the force sensitives within the world felt it. Coursing through them and around as they seized their heads from the constant rush of power.

Some shooting to their feet, some hurling to the floor to cough up there guts, and others simply collapsed.

Yet, Ben for a second saw it. As the lightning once again struck across the sky…almost like a wave it consumed the city. Everything the wave touched rendered the electricity within the area, to go black.

The bright lights that made up the apartment complexes, the great skyscrapers, the cars that decorated the streets. The stars were gone and were now replaced with darkness. The Thopter was taken within the strange wave. The controls going haywire as Ben and Haru broke through the lapse of concentration.

"What the hell was that!" Haru screamed.

The thopter stopped working, or rather the electricity was drained from it's fragile wings. Now, they were gliding through the air as Ben slammed his fist into the control panel. However, it proved fruitless.

"We're going down!" Haru yelled.

He seized the controls of the thopter. Gliding the thopter downwards and aiming towards the top of the Jedi Temple.

"This is going to be a rough landing, but it's the best that we can do!"

And just like that. The men and woman that were either training, gardening, or meditating within the top of the Jedi Temple watched as the sky turned dead. As a lone Jedi thopter streamed across the sky and with a massive blast. Etched itself deep within its stone roof flooring.

Casting off a brilliant dust cloud as they watched. A crowd slowly starting to form as the early shock was slowly starting to fade. "Come on, we got to get them out of there!" A lone Jedi screamed.

The crowd shaking themselves awake as they moved closer. However, the snapping hiss of a lightsaber blade echoed along there ears. The brilliant bronze blade piercing through the hull of the thopter as a hole emerged.

Ben and Haru, filled with scrapes, bleeding wounds, and bruises decorated there bodies. However, they could still move and none of their injuries appeared fatal.

Ben pushed through. His lightsaber blade hissing along the harsh torrent of rain as his apprentices rushed to try and help him and Haru. However, he saw it.

He watched as streaks of the blimps descended. Piercing like spears into blocks, roads, bridges. He heard the sound of gasp arise as he slowly rose, even as his limbs pained him from the crash. Rising as he heard the sizzling hiss of his blade.

Then he realized…that this was the start of something new. He knew deep down that this was different, that this was not like the Fire Nation, the Mandalorians, or The Dynasty of The Sith.

This threat was probably the most dangerous thing they had ever had to experience…and Ben did not know if he could win.
