Chapter 3
After practice, the four of them headed back to the dorms. Jay saw Aran once again lurking outside the dorms. Each locking eyes with the other, Jay made sure Aran saw his hold on Lonnie. Keeping Lonnie's hand firmly in his, he gently pulled her closer to his side. Heading inside, both boys guided the girls toward the boys' dorm.
Carlos and Jane took Dude out for an evening walk, leaving Jay and Lonnie alone in his dorm. Lonnie looked out the window. She could see the school grounds and watched the other students go about their business. They were all heading in for the night. Either studying or dinners or other plans for all of them. For Lonnie, it would be another sleepless night.
Jay watched her for a moment, before moving behind her, observing the grounds as well. Jay reached out and rubbed his hands up and down her arms, trying to give her a bit of comfort. "Stay here 'til they get back," Jay had to admit that his own concern for her was growing. Aran's bad attitude and relentless pursuit of Lonnie were disconcerting. "I'm gonna grab a shower, just hang out here. I'll be out in a minute."
Lonnie watched and nodded as he pulled his shirt up over his head when he walked into the bathroom. She bit her lip and tried not to swoon as she watched him. He closed the door slightly, leaving it open just a few centimeters just in case Lonnie needed him. He wouldn't have minded her joining him, but Jay was certain that would never happen. They were only fake dating.
Sitting down on Jay's bed, she looked around the room. As she turned her head, she could see Jay's reflection in the bathroom mirror as he stepped into the shower. Blushing, she got up and kept herself occupied with Jay's and Carlos' things so she wouldn't be tempted to look. As tempted as she was, Lonnie knew better.
She hadn't ever really looked at their stuff before. Walking over, she saw on Jay's dresser what looked like a lion's head with it's mouth opened wide. It was a copy of the famous Cave of Wonders. His cobra necklace lay next to the lion. A bottle of cologne sat there, too. Lonnie picked it up and smelled it. Yep, it was his.
Walking over to the nightstand, she found a tourney ball and his magical history textbook. He and Lonnie were taking that and several other classes together, which made this arrangement to keep Aran at arm's length all the more convenient. Maybe it wouldn't take long for the punk to figure out that their relationship was a ruse. Or, maybe their friendship would grow into something more.
Jay was in and out quickly and found Lonnie looking at the awards he had won in the last tourney season. He was proud of what he had done, and what he was still doing in sports and in school. He grew up believing that life was all about winning and being the best at everything. His father had drilled into his head 'there's no team in I', but now he approached life differently. Now, he understood the importance of teamwork and that doing your best was more important than being the best. And Lonnie helped him see that.
"Are you excited about the new season?" Lonnie heard him come into the room. Turning, she saw Jay standing just outside the bathroom, hair still wet and tied up in a messy man-bun and no shirt on, just his black jeans. Yeah, she thought to herself, this ruse is going to be hard to keep up.
"Yeah, it'll be different without Ben being on it. We've been practicing a lot and training the new kids so… should be good." Jay walked over and looked out the window. He could see Carlos and Jane in the distance, still waiting on Dude. "Do you want to wait here? Or I can wait with you in your room?"
"I'll be okay. Maybe I've seen too many horror movies lately and I'm just overreacting," Lonnie really liked spending time with Jay, but didn't want to inconvenience him. "I'll go, I'll get out of your hair."
Lonnie headed toward the door. As she opened it, Hay was right behind her. His hand reached around her and closed the door. "I don't think so. You don't watch horror movies, and I've been watching the guy. He's up to something. I don't trust him, especially with you. Besides, I said I wanted to help. So let me." Jay turned her around to face him, his body close to hers. Jay reached up and ran his fingers through Lonnie's hair. "Did you ever think I might like spending time with you?"
Lonnie opened and closed her mouth. Looking down, all she saw was his bare chest and muscles. She honestly didn't think he was that interested in her. They were friends, yes, but nothing more. He had never given her a second thought.
Jay hesitated to tell her, but he noticed the attention she gives him. At the gym and in classes, the corner glances, Lonnie would watch Jay. He noticed each time and felt a jolt in his heart whenever he caught her looking. He just never asked her out on a date or anything. Now, he had to wonder why.
Jay had paid as much attention to Lonnie as she had to him. He even changed his workout schedule so he could be in the gym at the same time as her. He watched her during practice. She wasn't just the captain, but a very attractive female. Every straight guy on the team, even Chad who was still obsessed with Audrey, took notice. She was hard to not look at.
"I just don't want you to end up not wanting to hang out with me anymore or feel obligated to do this. You don't have to." Lonnie wanted Jay to spend time with her because he wanted to, not because he felt he had to. "Besides, what if I'm just overreacting?"
"You aren't overreacting, the guy's a jerk. I'm helping you. So stop this," Jay smirked as Lonnie blushed and looked at the ground. His charms were working on her, and he hardly had to try. Pulling on his shirt, he pulled away from Lonnie. Jay wasn't going to let her handle this guy on her own. Plus, the afternoon had been a lot more fun with her, than if he had done it with someone else.
Once Carlos and Hane returned, the boys walked them back to their room. Carlos went in to kiss Jane good night, not wanting the whole halfway full of girls to see. Jay stood at the door with Lonnie, as the girls called out wishing Jay a good night. Lonnie watched Jay for his reaction. He nodded, acknowledging them, but saying nothing more.
"Maybe we should've been the ones to go inside?" Jay said softly, leaning his head against Lonnie's so no one else could hear. Lonnie looked around at the girls congregating around them and laughed softly. It was like they all had a radar, knowing he was in the hall.
Jay ignored the group of girls saying good night to him and focused on Lonnie. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, he cupped her face with his hand, his thumb brushing her cheek. "About earlier, I really do like spending time with you. And you know, maybe, if you're interested, we could…" Reaching down, Jay took both of Lonnie's hands in his. He took a step into her, licking his lips, Jay suddenly felt a little nervous. Seeing movement out of the corner of his eye, Jay looked down the hall and saw Aran peering around the corner. "This is getting real old fast."
Jay squeezed her hand. "Hold that thought," he murmured, before turning and yelling down the hallway, "Hey Aran, come here!" Jay barked as he stormed down the hallway.
Aran knew he had been spotted and sauntered down the hallway towards Jay. He didn't like Jay one bit. His father filled him in on Jafar and everything he had done to their family. Aran was certain that Jay would turn out just as bad as Jafar. Once in front of Jay, he crossed his arms defiantly over his chest. Seeing the audience that was around them, Aran kept his voice as innocent as he could. "What seems to be the problem?"
Why don't you tell me? You've been following us all afternoon. What's the deal?" Jay was going to nip this in the bud now.
"I don't know what you're talking about. I've been busy running all over campus, the new kid and all, ya know. Why are you so interested in what I do? Aran looked around, making sure everyone was listening.
"Trust me, I'm not. But every time we turn around, you're there. Lonnie says you're everywhere she is and you're bugging her for a date." Jay couldn't hide his annoyance anymore.
"I've been trying to get a date with her. That's really none of your business." Aran felt that he shouldn't have to explain himself to Jay. Jay was a street rat in his eyes, just like his father.
"I think it is," Jay got up in Aran's face with his shoulders back and fists at his side. He was more than ready to take this punk on. Lonnie had only seen him like this once, and that was on the Isle when Harry taunted Mal.
"Why?" Aran mirrored Jay's stance.
"Because I care about what happens to her." Jay had started to quietly tell Lonnie himself, but Aran was pushing his buttons and Jay was getting madder by the minute.
"Since when do you care? You aren't together. You flirt with every girl in school. You want to tell me, you actually have feelings for someone other than yourself?" Aran was irritated. Jay had all the other girls in the school falling over themselves for him. So why did he want this one? It's not like someone raised by villains could care about anyone but themselves.
"I do care about her!" Jay was done with this guy. "Let's get something clear. Lonnie is mine! My girlfriend! So stay away from her! No more asking her out. You don't follow her again!" Jay's hands were balled into tight fists. Seeing this, Lonnie ran up behind Jay and grabbed his hand, her other hand holding tight to his bicep. She hoped to stop him from starting a fight in front of all the girls in their grade.
"A little possessive? I've heard that about you." If Aran couldn't get Lonnie by playing the part of the nice guy, he would sabotage Jay's relationship with her. He always got what he wanted, one way or another. If Jay wanted Lonnie, Aran would make sure that didn't happen. Jay didn't deserve a girl like her, and Aran would make sure she saw that.
"Lonnie isn't a toy, she's a person. And she's mine. You got beef with me, you bring it to me. Don't even think of trying to get to me through her. If you come near her and ask her out again, you deal with me." If nothing else, Jay thought, maybe a straight-up threat would work.
Aran held up his hands, and with a slight evil chuckle, sauntered away. Jay saw the smile and the glint in Aran's eyes and knew they were far from done. Jay knew a villain when he saw one. Lonnie looked around at the girls, still hanging out in the hallway, who saw the whole spectacle and all looked very shocked and disappointed.
"Jay, you gotta calm down," Lonnie whispered. The girls moved a distance away from them and began whispering. "Why did you say that? We aren't really dating. You just got yourself a girlfriend and everyone will know it by morning," Lonnie whispered, noticing the attention they were now getting.
Jay turned around and looked at her. Taking her hand, he intertwined their fingers. Stepping closer, he searched her face for something to tell him that he was wrong, that she didn't want him too. Not finding that, Jay spoke softly to her. "Maybe I do want us to be together."
