The Makai Code
By Lilacpurple
Disclaimer: I do not own Yu Yu Hakusho or the Code of Hammurabi. Crazy.
A/N: Inspired by my Civics teacher, who, although boring, did teach me about the Code of Hammurabi. I dedicate this chapter to silverfingers, my awesome and yet country music loving beta.

"Any man that commits thievery shall be killed, or shall pay tenfold back what he has taken. He shall also be disowned of his clan, and any honorable burial he would have received by way his clan. The manner of his death will be grotesque and painful in nature, the thief paying tenfold for his actions in suffering. His body, once stripped of materials of any value, will be cast out into the wilderness for the beasts to eat."
The words of the Makai code rang in Youko Kurama's head like the tolls of the death bells in a silent church. "Go, GO!" His partner screamed, even while his body was impaled with thousands of sharp and small bamboo poles.
Blood gushed forward onto the clean ground. The sound of the bounty hunters was behind them as they bounded through the underbrush. "Go." Kuronue repeated softly, sagging forward in the trap. The bat's wings were punctured in numerous places, leaving the green bamboo around them covered in his blood.
With one last look, Youko Kurama took off at a sprint through the undergrowth. The bounty hunters yelled triumph at seeing Kuronue's dying body, but he could still hear several of them continue, crashing through the small bushes as if they weren't there.
A hissing sound and a plop informed him that they had bows and were adept archers. That one had nearly taken off his tail.
The next one landed in the small of his back, the poison tip instantly causing his once molten gold eyes to dull to an apathetic yellow. He fell forward onto the ground, gasping at the sudden lack of air. His own blood poured onto his white robes, seeping into them with startling quickness.
His yellow eyes moved to the pool of crimson liquid at his right. He brought a wondering, pale hand to it, letting the fluid strain that as well. He realized that he was definitely going to die.
The last words of the Makai Code's section on thieves came to mind as he lay on the dirt listening to the hunters shout their victory.
". . .And his soul will never find rest."

A/N: Okay, I totally made up the Makai Code. I am proud of myself, mainly because it was so brutal. This was originally intended as an chaptered fanfiction, but now it's a one-shot.
