A/N: Well, my apologies for two things: One, that I haven't posted in forever, and two, that this A/N will be really, really, long. Sorry, but three things must be said:
1. This chapter does start to talk a bit about morals. I don't believe there can be a vampire story without some thought of them. These are my personal beliefs, so please, don't rant on my story because of them. If you must, say something polite in a review, or e-mail me.
2. Part of the reason I broke the chapter off where I did was I'm not quite sure that the next part is PG-13. I don't want to lose readers because I move it to R, but I definitely don't want to get kicked off of the site for improperly labeling my story. So, look at what's implied in this chapter, (which will be continued rather bluntly in the next one) and tell me what you think about the rating. Once more, sorry for the long delays, I've gotten some inspiration now so updates will be coming more quickly.
3. Okay, later in this chapter, I name someone Van Helsing. This is not the real Van Helsing. That is simply an ironic alias that the character took. Also, I code name something a Lestat later. Again, not trying to steal anyone's stuff, just an ironic code name. Don't yell at me, just review if you think they're inappropriate.
Blue Moon
The day passed slowly for Maeg, who'd managed to land in the school's most boring classes that year. Naturally, she didn't have to continue going to school, but she liked to keep up with modern technology and theory. Besides that, she was bound to hunt down vampires who fed upon the innocent, and schools were the best place for that. Like drugs, vampires seemed to attract adolescents through their mix of danger and mystery.
Though Maegith didn't believe in that Whole Earth crap that had been started recently, because no one should deny their heritage, she also didn't condone taking the life of an innocent sentient being. When something could think as deeply as humans could, it was not fair to end that life after it had truly started.
So, her day had finally ended. She went home on the bus, yawning all the way. When she got home, she printed out the Global History homework for that night. It was almost funny, but yet sad – in the eight years since she'd gone through tenth grade the last time, the school had not gotten any new Global textbooks. However, it worked very well for Maegith. On days like this, she was able to print homework without even looking. And it didn't even affect her grade; since she'd lived through the tenth grade curriculum, actually reading the book was rather pointless. Finally, with an exhausted sigh, she closed her blinds, got undressed, and went to sleep.
With a start, Maegith awoke at midnight to the shrill beeping of her alarm clock. She stretched, feeling refreshed. Now, it was time to go to work. She put on a grey suit that elegantly accented her form. Her hair was swept up into a severe bun, the look softened by the two curls she allowed to frame her pale face. She didn't look in the mirror, knowing it would be a useless endeavor. With a sigh, she transported herself to a room in a government building in a town, none of which existed according to the records.
"Ah, Maegith. Right on time, as always." The man at the desk smiled at her. We have a couple of new ones, and of course you haven't managed to catch up with us yet."
Maeg smiled back at the man, who called himself Van Helsing, though that was obviously not his true name. Sure, Maegith could have easily found out his real name, but she respected the man too much to pry into his mind uninvited. Van Helsing was the leader of a special operation nicknamed Dracula. As far as she knew, Maegith was the only actual vampire to be involved.
Maegith allowed Van Helsing to lead her to the back room where the prisoners were kept. He kept watch at the door as she went from cell to cell. At each cell, her eyes unfocused slightly as she slipped into the prisoners minds. Tonight, there was only one who was innocent. He was escorted out of the cell, and would be placed in a hotel overnight. The next day, the defense would mysteriously find some sort of evidence showing that this man was not a murderer, and for some reason, neither the prosecution nor the judge would dispute it. The man would be sworn to secrecy about what happened to him on Death Row, and life would continue for him.
After checking the new ones, Maegith continued along the row of cells. At the last one, she'd smiled. This was a kill she had been looking forward to for weeks. The man in the cell had been arrested for child rape, and when Maegith looked into his mind, she found that the rape was only one part of some grotesque demonic ceremony of worship in which at the end, the child was cut and left to bleed to death. Even this minion did not know what the hierarchy of his cult did with the blood. Unfortunately, he likewise did not know who any of the other members were.
Maegith entered his cell with a smile and a slight seductive twitch of her hips. She was baiting him, her base, predatory, instincts taking over. As her face turned slightly toward him, Van Helsing shivered. He'd only seen this most sadistic side of the vampire once or twice, and hoped each time never to see it again. He was just glad not to be on the receiving end.
Maegith felt herself sinking in red. This was one of many prices she paid for being one of the 'good' ones. When something got her truly angry, she could not help to succumb to those feelings that most vampires allowed out to a lesser degree, but more often then she. With a mental sigh, she turned herself over to it, watching her actions through the screen of her eyes.
"Well," she heard herself say seductively. "This will never do. Who ever heard of breaking out of prison dirty? Well, come on then." She wrenched the man up by the elbow, managing to brush her chest across his arm in the process.
"What? Who are you? How will we get out in broad daylight?" The man's voice was hoarse from disuse.
"Its midnight. As to how we're getting out, leave that up to me." As she spoke, she set an illusion about herself to cast a slight glow and perfect features already improved through death. This would allow her to find more about him through how he took this.
Seeing her slight change, the convict looked at her diminutive form with an awed gaze. "Goddess! I am yours to command, my Lady. I always knew you or the Nameless One would save me!"
Bingo. That told Maegith everything she needed to know as she smiled, the dim light glinting off of her sharpened, elongated, canine teeth. The 'god' was a vampire, and used the blood as sustenance. She took a tally of the vampires who would dare do such things, and were powerful enough to gather a following as this one obviously had. She only came up with a couple of names, and could only pray that it wasn't Arcturus.
Arcturus. She didn't let herself dwell in memory, not now when she'd need her wits. Maegith forcefully shoved the other vampire out of her mind. She winked at Van Helsing as she left, the room. As she escorted the murderer out of the row of cells, she heard him pick up his walkie-talkie. "One coming for the upper rooms. We've got a Lestat coming in. Check soundproofing."
Maegith grinned ferally as she heard his last words. Soundproofing would definitely be needed, as would a very strong carpet cleaner.
