This assignment was to write a dramatic monologue in iambic pentameter of a mythical or legandary character. I chose Freddy Krueger. Enjoy.

Sweet Dreams

You children sleep too well tonight. You brats

think that you're safe, protected from my wrath,

yet in your sleep, your dreams, I wait to strike.

You think I'm gone. Won't you scream when you see

that I am waiting in the one place that

you can't escape. Oh, I'll show you; I'll wait

until your dreams are sweet. With smiles, you'll run

and skip and jump down flights of fancy free.

Oh, you will think that you are free from me,

that you can dream without the nightmares I

will bring to all the children of the ones

who trapped and burned and tried to kill me. Hah!

Your dreams will crack, your light will fade and you

will fight. I know you'll try, but in the end

I'll eat your fears and drink your souls, oh yes.

You'll try to stay awake, but it won't last!

Then one by one, you'll fall asleep and meet

the man who brings your doom, but not so fast…

I think I want to have a little fun.

Before I end our little game, I'll toy

with you, and let you think that you might win.

I've done it seven times before. You think

I'm dead, but you can't kill what lives in dreams!

You'll hear the screech of knives on steel and freeze,

you'll smell my burned and rancid flesh and choke,

you'll see my dirty clothes and hat and scream,

and then you'll feel my claw rip through your skin.

Yes…but for now, just rest. Lay down your heads.

Good night, sleep tight…I'll see you in your dreams.
