I said I wanted 10 reviews before I would write a follow-up, but honestly, it only took two. I'm not exactly spoiled with reviews so those two made my toes curl with happiness. Seriously, they do! My toes curl themselves into tight little curls when I'm very happy or excited. Thanks Rejiita and Werewolf of Fire for making me happy and motivated to keep on writing!
Follow-up chapterWe will always miss you
"It feels strange to know that he loved me. But now that I think of it, it does makes sense, you know, some thing he did and said."
They were all gathered around the table in the living room, Tala and Ian sat in the couch while Bryan and Spencer occupied an armchair each, talking about their departed friend.
"It's scary to know that he loved me so deeply he rather died than lived without me" Ian said, squeezing his eyes shut to prevent the tears from falling. "I feel as if it's my fault he's gone..."
"It kind of is, yet you couldn't save him because you never felt for him in that way, you could never give him what he wanted, needed" Tala patted Ian's shoulder. "But still... I can understand why he never wanted to talk about it. I noticed something was wrong with him but he always brushed it off, saying it was nothing to worry about" Tala sighed. "I should have pushed it..."
"He didn't wanted us to know and he masked his decay pretty well" Bryan said, eyes closed to conceal his emotions.
"By the look of him when we found him had he not eaten much the previous few weeks. Honestly, I was shocked by how skinny he was" Spencer added, chin in his hands, elbows resting on his knees. The others nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, he looked almost like a skeleton or something, looked so..." Ian trailed off, searching for the right word.
"Vulnerable" Tala filled in. Everybody nodded.
"And fragile. So damn fragile and breakable" Bryan whispered, desperately trying to take hold of his emotions, breathing heavily.
They stood gathered before the big grey headstone marking where Kai was buried. A foot high engravement of Dranzer soared at the top, below it his name and date of birth and death, then a little poem they had written together with the Bladebreakers.
We never saw
How depressed you were
You never let us in
Your loyalty was maybe not the best
But you were always there
When we needed you
But you never let us in
Your advice was indisposable
Always given in the last minute
Turning despair and defeat
Into confidence and victory
But you never let us in
Team Captain of the Bladebreakers
Second Captain of the Blitzkrieg Boys
Mr. Sourpuss
The Lone Wolf
The wet blanket of every victory
Always nagging us to practice
Always ensuring victory
The unbreakable Phoenix of two teams
The cold, stoic and mysterious one
Always standing alone in your dark corner
You never let anybody in
But you will always have a special place
In our hearts
Then they finally came. The tears. First one little drop, shed unwillingly, then it all let loose. Sinking to his knees Tala cried and soon a once strong arm was wrapped around his shoulders, looking up through the blur the now freely falling tears created he saw Bryan, also crying freely. Soon after crept a broken Ian up in his captain's lap and Tala hugged him as Bryan hugged both of them and Spencer joined, wrapping his strong arms around the others.
Sitting together in a bunch on the cold ground they cried. Cried until no more tears could be forced out.
Three pictures hung on the plain pale blue wall, framed with painted red feathers and flames.
The first picture showed the Bladebreakers, Kai standing a bit away from the others, like he always did.
The second picture, to the right of the first, showed the Blitzkrieg Boys, Kai standing beside Tala like the second captain he was.
The third and last picture was bigger and hung below the other two, creating the lower tip of a triangle. And there he is, alone in his independence, Kai Hiwatari, one of the best and most skilled bladers in the world.
An extremely rare smile graced his features and contradicted his usually cold crimson eyes, intimidating blue triangles and overall arrogant, uncaring and superior demeanour. Thanks to the Bladebreakers who eventually got their old sourpuss to take the picture he had refused to for so long. It made him look like a completely different person, nicer, friendlier, more... human. For once did he actually look like a normal human.
We will always miss you, Kai.
Hope you liked it.
The reason I let Kai die at home was because in so many other suicide fics I've read someone always finds the committer in time and brings him to hospital where he mostly survives. I just wanted to do something else.
Even though Kai is one of my favourite characters do I not feel guilty or horrible for killing him in this fic, it's just a story.
I'm considering thinking up a storyline for another KaiIan fic since I've never seen anybody write that pairing before. It could turn out to be interesting...
Any comment is mostly appreciated.
