Forever

Disclaimer: Although this one-shot doesn't actually use names, it's an implied Draco/Hermione, who both belong to JK Rowling.

A/N: This is a one-shot I just had to write down 'cause the idea was bugging me . Please R&R!

He promised me once that he'd love me forever. He said that until the sun rose in the West, he'd always love me. "I'll always love you. Remember that, okay? Wherever you are, remember that I'll always love you, and that always is forever."

And I had nodded, too wrapped in his words of love to care that one day, all would be gone. I knew it wouldn't last; nothing so beautiful, so pure, could last forever. But we had loved each other, our love running so deeply that we didn't stop to realize that one day, we'd be separate: one day, we'd be fighting against each other.

His smile was the one thing that'd always cheer me up. Next to his eyes, they were his best feature. If he had smiled a bit more, his face would've been so bright that no one would ever mistaken him to be a dark, stoic character. But he never smiled, except around me. He once told me that I was the only one he had ever smiled for; I had hugged him tightly, too glad to notice that his eyes were expressionless as he gazed across the lake.

I should have realized that things wouldn't have lasted. I stupidly thought that if we wanted it enough, nothing would happen. And so I prayed. Every night, I would pray that we'd be together forever.

That was a year ago. One year, and already everything has changed. He and I have gone our separate ways, and we haven't spoken to each other since then. We haven't even kept in touch. I guess I don't mind too much... It's nice to have my mind occupied on something else

I saw him once, a long time ago. It was plain coincidence; both of us were just passing by. We had stopped and stared at each other, on that cold winter day. Stopped and stared. That's all we ever did, even back in school. But he slowly came up to me and gazed down at me.

"Hello. Fancy meeting you here," he drawled casually, as if nothing had ever gone amiss. His platinum eyes were as fierce as ever, boring through me.

"Yes… It's.. such a nice surprise," I said softly. I saw his eyes flicker over me for a second before they landed again on a spot away from my face. I followed his gaze, only to see that he was looking at a random spot in the sky.

"Indeed. A nice surprise."

I nodded, looking away from him, letting my eyes linger on the road beyond him. "How've you been?"

"I've been fine. And yourself?"

I nodded again. "Fine."

He nodded curtly, his eyes again on me. "Have a nice day." And he had walked away. We've never heard from each other since, haven't seen each other--nothing.

...He promised me once that he'd love me forever. He said that until the sun rose in the West, he'd always love me. "I'll always love you. Remember that, okay? Wherever you are, remember that I love you, and that always is forever."

And at the time, I had forgotten that to tell him forever is an awful long time. Too long, perhaps.
