My Last Breath

Song fic based on MY LAST BREATH-By: Evanescence

Prologue: Stories Unveiled

My eyes opened as light flooded them. The brightness cleared and Katara stood before me. I strained to stand but she put a relaxing hand upon my chest and I fell silent and motionless. What had happened? It was all…so vague…like it never really happened…like it was all just a dream…or a nightmare…

"Sokka? How are you feeling?" she asked.

"I don't know…I just woke up…I do feel kinda hungry, though…" I replied, trying to cheer her doleful face up.

"Sokka…" she giggled.

All fell silent as she left. It was slowly pouring into my head. The memories of the fire…of the screams… I remember…Katara had been captured by Zukko. Aang and I had to rescue her. I remember busting her out. Zukko caught me…and I remember the fire flaring into my eyes…then waking up in a strange place. Katara entered again with a warm plate of fresh-baked bread and handed it to me. I set it aside.

"Katara…" I began, my mind trailing at first.

"Yeah, Sokka? What's wrong?" she replied at the dawdling of my mind.

"What happened?" As soon as I asked, I knew that she was going to start from the beginning. "After I busted you out…what happened?"

"Well," she began, "Zukko caught us before we could reach Appa. You told me to run. I thought you were right behind me…but you weren't… You stayed behind to defend us…so we could get away. Just as we boarded Appa, I saw you weren't there… You were fighting with Zukko. He struck you several times, but you wouldn't give up. Finally, he knocked you out. He shot a fireball at your chest. It hit your neck…" Her voice trailed away for a moment, then found its way back. "Sokka, I thought I'd lost you!" She cried, wrapping her arms around me.

So that's it. I had for once been brave enough to do something without thinking. But why? Normally, I wouldn't have done that. Who knew why…brother instincts? That wasn't important. All that matter was that we were both safe. And so was Aang.

Author's Note:
This is a song fic as you can tell. This prologue has really nothing to do with the song, but it is just so you will know what happened later on. Hope you enjoy! –Niobe
