Title: Gentle Oblivion
Game: Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken
Characters/Pairings: Nilus, Ninian
Rating: G
Notes: Written for fe100 on Livejournal, as theme #90, which is rain. It probably associates with two other themes, but mainly rain.
The sound of silence is a strange sound, Nilus notes. His knees are hugged to his chest, and his eyes are glued to the ground. His body is there, but his mind is lost in thought. The sound of silence, he thinks, is different, strange and yet somehow beautiful. It can be happy, and yet still sad. For silence is never completely happy. His sister, he thinks, is like silence.
Ninian smiles, but never laughs. Her smile is gentle, so gentle that the corners of her lips only curve ever-so-slightly—and yet, it is still a smile. A sad one, but still a smile. He never hears her laugh, because she never laughs, and by this he knows that she's never completely happy.
He pauses, eyes flittering upwards, then slowly back down to the ground.
No, Ninian is silence, he decides.
As he thinks, the rain begins to fall, mildly, but at a steady pace. The rain touches his almost bare arm, sliding slowly downwards. Gently, it snaps him out of his thoughts, giving his mind enough time to register that they would have to get moving soon, lest they be caught in the rain again.
"Nilus?"
Her voice, he notes, is almost silent against the rain, as are her approaching footsteps. She touches his arm softly, and only then does he glance up. But he doesn't move. Instead, he takes his flute from his waist and presses it to his lips.
The melancholy tune rises above the beating of the rain. Nilus's eyes close, and all seems to have faded into silent, gentle darkness, and the only thing that he can hear is the sound of his flute.
The bard plays on, and the dancer begins to dance, silent laughter escaping from her lips as the two slowly sink into a gentle oblivion.
