She pulled away, her eyes shiny with something that resembled fear.
He dropped his hands from her waist, confused and disoriented. He watched as she scrambled away, fear evident in her steps. He was unable to take his eyes from her, but he wouldn't stop her.
She looked up at him as she got into her car, her eyes softening.
And then she left him there.
Alone.
He didn't know what came over him. When he heard that bastard Ben forcing her into her car, he didn't even think about what he was doing. He ended up at the Camelot, punching that idiot ATF agent in the face without even thinking about what it meant.
Didn't he know not to fuck with the few people Logan Echolls gave a damn about?
And then it dawned on him, his lips still burning from their kiss:
He could not stand to lose another person he cared about.
He was so sure that bastard was going to do something awful to her—his heart hadn't clamped up that way since his mother… since that night at the Regent…
And he couldn't stand it.
He wasn't supposed to care about Veronica Mars. Why care about someone investigating the few people in his life that cared about him?
He wasn't supposed to care about Veronica Mars. So he wouldn't.
At least, he wouldn't tell her. And he wouldn't act like he did.
He would not risk losing someone else, not when he was so close to losing Duncan that he was pushing him away, too. He'd rather have nothing than lose again.
Whoever said it was better to have love and lost than never loved at all was a fucking moron.
He left the Camelot then, satisfied with his decision, ignoring the tingling of his lips, the scent that followed him that was unmistakably her.
And the she walked into the journalism room, and his resolve was shot to hell.
He was sure the look in his face was identical to the deer-in-the-headlights look she was sporting. He didn't care. He couldn't stop his heart from hammering or his stomach from fluttering.
He was left with one simple thought:
Now what?
