(Prologue)

Did you know that there are two other world besides this one? Well, there are. They are called the Demonworld and the Humanworld. Most humans don't know about either world. The ones that do are called Spirit Detectives. They have spiritual powers and track down troublemakers in both worlds.

Now, think about this:

What would happen if a demon fell in love with the one being that demons hate above all others: a human? Would this demon, even after shaming himself in such a way, go after the child of his human love? Would he do this after killing his love and thinking he'd killed the child too?

And what would happen if that child found out what she is? Would she want to find out who-or what-she will become? Or will the child already know this without even knowing what she is?

(Chapter 1)

That day the sky was still clouded over from last night's rain. The trees were bare, waiting for the winter snow. The wind was biting, bone-cracking cold. It looked as if it would rain again, today of all days. Because something was about to happen, something strange, something magical, that last day of school before Christmas break.

The old mansion on the hill, a creepy place, according to onlookers who passed on the way home, with ivy growing up the sides, overgrown grass, and huge, old trees. It had four floors and over fifty rooms, like something pulled out of a ghost story.

Surrounding this mansion were gardens. These gardens never seemed to die. Sweet scents filled the air from the cherryblossom trees that were planted on either side of the driveway.

A big black gate surrounded the gardens and mansion to keep outsiders from getting in.or maybe insiders from getting out.

On this day where our story starts, a young girl locked up the place for her grandmother.

This girl's name was Hope, and she had red hair with brown streaks, all natural. Her eyes were green. She had no mom or dad. According to her grandmother, her mom died just after she was born. She had also never been to public school, up until a month ago. She was fifteen years old and her sixteenth birthday was coming up fast.

Hope started down the driveway to the gate.

"Hope, you're late," a girl with short brown hair, wearing a blue school uniform, said impatiently.

"Sorry. I kind of."

"Oh, that's okay, it's just that I couldn't stand another second of Yusuke's complaints," the girl said, smiling. The girl's name was Keiko, and she had brown hair and brown eyes, and was a model student, a fact that completely disgusted her delinquent boyfriend.

"We've been out here for an hour waiting for you, and I'm freezing."

This voice belonged to the aforementioned 'delinquent boyfriend.' He had slicked-back black hair and black eyes. While Keiko wore a neat school uniform, he was dressed in bright green.

"Shut up, Yusuke! And don't whine." Keiko threw a plastic bag at Yusuke. "And put on your uniform. I went by and got it from your mom this morning."

Yusuke muttered something that sounded like "control freak" and sullenly picked the bag up off the ground.

"Well, aren't you a right little ray of sunshine," Hope said. "Hey, Keiko, it looks like rain. Better put up the umbrella."

"I think you're right; it does look like rain," Keiko said.

"Let's go find the others," Hope said.

"Yeah, come on, Yusuke," Keiko said.

Still mumbling, Yusuke got up and followed Keiko and Hope away from the mansion to meet up with their friends, Kurama and Yusuke.
