New Girl
Riku, Riku!
The silver-haired boy looked up, seeing an overly-excited Sora in front of him. He lifted an eyebrow quizzically. There's this new girl on the island, she's down by the beach, I saw h—She's not anything like Selphie, is she?
Sora shuddered visibly and made a face. Uh-uh. If she was I would've stayed far away from her.Good. So, what, we're going down to see her? Riku fiddled boredly with a paopu fruit that was hanging from the branch of his favorite tree.
Of course, Riku! Come on!
The boy then half-dragged his older friend down to the beach. Riku squinted his eyes against the sunlight — he could just barely see the figure of an auburn-haired girl sitting quietly by the water...
There she is, there she is! Sora pointed ecstatically. Let's go talk to her!
He was not too keen on this idea. Girls confused him. The only girl he had experience with was, of course, the aforementioned Selphie, and her constant gigglefits and romanticism had scared poor Riku away from all females for good. He couldn't even think of his mother without imagining that she'd been the same way in younger years after that nightmare.
Sora was the first one to bound up to the child and introduce himself, as usual. Riku stayed behind, watching curiously. Her hair was short and she wore a cute, strapped dress with purple designs. Her eyes were of a deep blue and almost reminded him of Sora's. A necklace with a small pendant was hanging around her neck. Riku wondered absently if it had any special meaning to it.
I'm Sora! the other boy said cheerfully. The girl clasped her hands behind her back and looked down shyly.
My name is Kairi, she replied in a tiny, only barely-audible voice.
Kairi.
Riku thought it was a pretty name.
That's Riku, Sora informed her, pointing at him. The same blue, blue eyes that he had observed before were now staring straight at him, and somehow it unnerved him. He looked down immediately.
Though he did not see it, the girl, blushing slightly, had done the same. Hello... Riku.
He couldn't take it. He ran off, back to the sanctuary of his solitude.
Riku would never, ever be able to handle girls.
