Dreams
A blanket of stars covered the sky as she stared out past the cliff. Thankfully she was alone. Bringing her knees up to her chest, she rested her head on them and sighed. It was very quiet, a big difference to what she was used to.
"Quiet, indeed" came a voice.
"Hiei" the girl said softly.
"What are you doing out here?" he asked.
"Thinking. What are you doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I followed you."
She chuckled. "Didn't know you were that much of a stalker."
He gave his world-famous "Hn" and sat down beside her. They sat in silence for a few minutes. Finally the girl spoke.
"I couldn't sleep."
"There are many other places closer to the temple to fall asleep at rather than a cliff."
"I'm tired of staying at the temple. Genkai's place feels more like a prison than a haven."
"It's for your own good."
"Heh. The many times I've heard that."
"Sabriel, there's another reason why you're here, isn't there?"
Sabriel frowned, then looked up at the sky. "Il est écrit dans le étoiles."
"What?" asked Hiei.
"Il est—ugh, it's written in the stars. To my ancestors, it meant that the lives of everyone had been foretold by the gods, and placed in the sky for all to see. Unfortunately, my ancestors did not have the power to read the stars."
"Can you?"
"Yes."
Hiei raised his eyebrows. "Is that how you knew us before you met us?"
Sabriel smiled. "Yeah. I love to read the stories, especially those of sorrow."
"And why's that?"
"…because it reminds me that I'm not the only one."
I wish the day would never end
"Not the only one?"
"Don't question it. It would be even better if you just forget what I said."
For it brings night, and night will send
"Alright then. How many lives have you read?"
"Lives? Oh. A number too great, I imagine. I rarely ever sleep."
The dreams to me, the dreams I fear
"That's not healthy."
"This coming from the one who sleeps in trees."
Then I wake up, with many a tear
"Why don't you sleep?"
"No reason."
The dreams that haunt, the dreams that scare
"There is a reason for everything."
"…It's my fears"
The dreams that always seem to bear
"Your fears? I thought fools were fearless."
Sabriel laughed quietly. "True, but I'm not a complete fool."
Sorrow and Anger, Revenge and Hate
Sabriel sighed. "All my life I've been hated by everyone. My mother dead and my father in hiding for fear of being killed as well."
"Technically your father wasn't hiding."
"Doesn't matter. Many hated him. He was safe, while I had to live my life fearing that someone would take their revenge for him out on me. I had no one except the stars."
Telling me that dreaded Fate
"Can you see your life there?"
"…yes."
Will take me away without a sound
"And what does is show?"
"You know what? I'm tired now. Thanks for the talk, Hiei."
Sabriel got up, and began walking off, leaving a partially irritated, partially thoughtful Hiei following in her wake.
And there in my dreams I shall wait to be found
