The moon hung high in the sky, perched behind tiny wisps of clouds. Its light illuminated the night, and one tiny ray streamed through the window of our damp room. I lay on the moldy bed facing Violet, who slept soundlessly beside me. Barely audible snores could be heard from Sunny, sleeping on our one pillow on the floor. Silent, warm breath escaped from Violet's lips and hit my neck, causing a shill to sweep over my body. The moonlight shone on her soft face, as I looked on in amazement. Only by the moonlight could I see Violet like this. Only when the sun set and the moon rose could I marvel at her beauty. Only when the stars shone brightly could I see how ungodly gorgeous she was and was suddenly aware of every curve in her body. She could only be mine by the light of the moon.
I fell asleep like this every night. Pretending to the sleep, so when I heard steady breathing beside me I could watch Violet slumber before I slowly drifted to sleep myself. When morning would come, Violet and I would be siblings and nothing more, though my heart desired for her so much more. The day would bring the sun, and along with the sun it would bring judgment.
I woke the next morning, blinking the early sunlight out of my eyes. I quickly rolled over to hide in the shadows of the room only to see Violet smiling warmly at me. No doubt would Count Olaf be shouting at us to get our sorry asses out of bed to get the chores done, and that's exactly what the foul creature did.
So, we got our sorry asses out of bed, quickly cleaned up, and rushed downstairs to tend to the wishes of Olaf. All day the three of us worked on ridiculous chores set by the count, while he and his troupe practiced for some sort of production in his backyard. Violet, Sunny, and I shared small conversations in between tasks, but liked to keep quiet when Olaf was just outside the doors of his 'mansion'. I snuck secret glances at Violet whenever allowed, but never once said a word about my feelings.
That evening, after our chores were done, we were dismissed to bed. My body ached from the endless strain forced upon it. Sunny slept still on her pillow, I laid my sore body into bed next to an extremely tired Violet. "G'night, Klaus. I love you," she murmured before silently closing her eyes and drifting to sleep.
If only she meant those words the way I've always hoped she would. "I love you, too, Violet," I whispered back before leaning in and giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead. I watched the corners of her lips curve into a small smile as the sun set, bring the judgment and ridicule with it.
The moon was perched high in the sky, hidden behind giant sleepless clouds on a black, starless night. I lay awake, staring into the darkness of our damp room, for no moonlight escaped from behind the giant clouds to shine upon her soft face. Needless to say, it was a lonely night.
