He was a people watcher. He had always been a people watcher, not a people person. At times he wanted to change it, but he couldn't.
Sometimes his friends tried to make him more social and feeling, but it never worked.
Then there was Sara. The woman he cared about the most. She was so much like him. In some ways, he admired that, in other ways, he didn't.
He wasn't certain if he reciprocated the love that she had for him. He cared about her, but he couldn't imagine being with her the way she wanted. Not that he couldn't imagine being with her physically, and he was already there emotionally to an extent. He just couldn't imagine a lasting relationship with her, or anyone else for that matter. It was just his way.
So he wrote her a letter to explain it to her.
Sara,
There are so many things that I want to tell you. But there is something I need to explain.
I know how you feel for me; you have made in plain more than once. I don't think that it could ever be though. Not that you aren't an amazing person. I just don't think that I can ever be the man that you need.
You need someone who can make your day brighter, and I can't.
I am also your supervisor, which would make it wrong.
But I value your friendship, and I want that to stay.
Please don't be upset by this. I know it may hurt, but I just want you to care about someone else.
Grissom
He gave her the letter; she took it and read it. HE saw tears starting to glisten in her eyes.
"At least you told me why," she said at last.
"I'm sorry."
"I'll be fine." She smiled slightly. "We're friends at least, like we used to be." The tears fell from her eyes.
"Yes."
"Good." She wiped the tears away.
They shook hands and said the same thing.
"Friends."
The End
