The golden sun that was once high in the sky was now sinking into the horizon, creating a warm, orange glow across the evening sky. The ocean glittered under the sunset as a lonely figure leaned against the bow rail, staring down at the dark abyss. The chill of the April wind ruffled his blonde hair while his face, though holding a grim expression, glowed against the warmth of the sunset. His eyes – almost as blue as the Atlantic Ocean – gleamed with sorrow as he watched the white foam of the water crash against the ship. The heavy black coat that he wore fluttered behind him from the strength of the wind while he listened to the steady sounds of theTitanic slicing through the ocean.

Jack closed his eyes briefly as he berated himself for ever thinking that a first class girl could ever fall in love with someone like him. Despite all this, his heart obviously told him different. He still had feelings for her – the same feelings he felt the moment he laid eyes on her. Love. He never thought he would ever experience love in his life, especially not at his age. Sure, there had been other girls before Rose, but none of them could ever compare to her. Not his Rose. Not the beautiful girl who was trapped in her world and would eventually lose that fire that burned deep within her. Jack tried to save her from her gilded cage, but he failed. She decided to go back to Cal, even though he knew she was not happy to be with him.

Rose is a unique woman – a special woman. She taught him what it feels like to love – even if she did not feel the same way for him. He felt this magnetic pull whenever he was around her. He was not aware of it at first, but when she rejected him, he felt the painful break of his heart when he knew that he would never see her again. He will never get to see her beautiful smile or her eyes shining with happiness as she spoke to him about her dreams. He will never get to hold her hand again, or laugh with her – or dance with her. The more he thought about it, the more it broke his heart. He replayed the conversation they had earlier over and over in his mind and he could not shake the feeling that he had lost her forever. A part of him wished he had never met her so that he would not have to go through this pain, but as much as it did hurt him, he was grateful to have spent the past few days with her. It was a gift that he would cherish for the rest of his life. He took in a breath and kept his gaze down at the ocean while is mind began to wander.

Rose, you're no picnic. You're a spoiled little brat, even – but under all that, you're still the most amazingly, astounding, wonderful girl – woman, that I've ever known.

Jack, I —

No! Let me try to get this out. You're amaz – look, I'm not an idiot. I know how the world works. I've got ten bucks in my pocket and I have nothing to offer you, and I know that. I understand, but I'm too involved now. You jump, I jump, remember? I'm not turning away without knowing that you'll be all right.

Well, I'm fine. I'll be fine, really.

Really? I don't think so. They've got you trapped, Rose, and you're gonna die if you don't break free – maybe not right away 'cause you're strong, but sooner or later that fire – that fire that I love about you, Rose, that fire's gonna burn out.

It's not up to you to save me, Jack.

You're right. Only you could do that.

I'm going back. Leave me alone.

The last words that she had spoke to him plagued his mind and stabbed at his heart. Leave me alone. Those three words meant that she no longer wanted to see him – no longer wanted anything to do with him. She wanted their relationship to be just as it was before they met – before he saved her, before he fell in love with her.

Rose was in the dining saloon with her mother, Lady Duff-Gordon, and the Countess of Rothes discussing Rose's wedding.

"Tell Lucille of the stationary incident," the Countess of Rothes told Ruth.

"Well, of course, the invitations had to be sent back – twice!" Ruth stated as she held her teacup below her lips. She took a small sip and placed the cup back in its saucer. "And the bridesmaid dress, let me tell you what an odyssey that has been! Rose decided that she wanted lavender and she knows how much I detest the color, so she did it out of spite."

"Oh, if only you came to me sooner!" Lucille Duff-Gordon said, shocked.

Rose ignored the rest of the conversation and turned her head towards the next table where she saw a little girl – not more than six years old – slouch against her chair. Her mother then proceeded to correct her and teach her the proper way to sit like a lady and Rose suddenly realized what she was getting herself into. Did she really want to be told what to do for the rest of her life? To have her whole life planned out for her in every detail, for the rest of her life? She closed her eyes and shook her head. She needed to do something. She glanced down at the tea in front of her and tipped it over slightly, spilling the warm liquid over her fancy, velvet dress.

"Oh, heavens. Look what I've done," Rose uttered as if berating herself. She quickly grabbed a napkin and started dabbing at the skirt of her dress. "May I be excused, Mother?"

"Rose, you need to learn to be more poised," she scolded. "You seem to be very clumsy lately."

Rose pressed her lips together and nodded her head. "I'm sorry, Mother," she pushed her chair back and lifted herself from her seat.

Rose quickly left the dining saloon and went straight toward the third class entrance. She needed to find Jack and apologize for being such a fool. She snuck in and carefully walked down the white steps and into the corridor that led to the general room. She stepped in and was greeted by loud music and a swarm of people laughing and dancing with each other. She looked around, trying to find Jack, but the room was so crowded and she could not see him anywhere. She walked along the side and kept looking until she spotted the Italian and Irish men that Jack was with the other night. She made her way through the crowd who pretty much dispersed for her and stopped in front of them.

"Excuse me," Rose said, making her presence known.

Fabrizio turned to her and was obviously shocked to see her. "Ciao, signorina," he greeted with a smile.

"Hi, sorry to bother you," she took in a deep breath and managed a smile. "Have you seen Jack around? I need to talk to him."

"Oh, he's probably up at the bow," Tommy chimed in. "He seemed pretty upset earlier and said he needed to think."

Rose felt a pang of guilt tug at her heart. "Thank you."

Before they could say anything else, Rose turned on her heels and rushed back out on deck where she was greeted by the cold air of the North Atlantic. She turned towards the bow and started making her way over where she spotted Jack leaning against the bow rail, looking down at the ocean. Rose took in a deep breath and stepped closer, stopping just a few feet away from him. The chill of the wind brushed against her face, bringing some color to her cheeks while her loose red curls fluttered behind her.

"Hello, Jack."

"Hello, Jack."

Jack jumped at the sound of her voice. He did not think he would ever hear that sweet voice again. When he turned to face her, he felt his heart lift with joy. Her cheeks were rosy pink from the cold and her smile brought a warm glow to her eyes.

"I changed my mind."

Jack smiled at the sound of those words and felt his heart burst with happiness.

"They said you'd be up here —" Rose began.

"Shhh," Jack silenced her by pressing a single finger over his lips. He then reached out his hand and smiled at her. "Give me your hand."

Rose looked up at him with a gleam in her eyes. She took a step closer and placed her hand in his, feeling the warmth of his hand radiate through hers. He pulled her close and placed his other hand over her waist.

"Now, close your eyes," he said, his eyes shining under the glow of the setting sun.

Rose looked up at him, confused. Was he going to kiss her?

"Go on!" he urged with a smile.

Rose smiled and did as she was told. She felt Jack's hold on her tighten while he stood beside her.

"Step up . . ."

Rose furrowed her brows, but stepped up nonetheless. She wobbled a bit, but Jack secured his arm around her, keeping her balanced.

"Now, hold onto the railing," he instructed. He stood behind her and looked over at her. "Keep your eyes closed, don't peek!"

"I'm not!" she reassured him with a smile.

She felt the wind brush against her face while her heart pounded with intimidation. She had never felt more alive than this very moment. Being with Jack made her feel that way – he made her feel as if her life had purpose and that was one of many things she loved about him.

"Step up onto the railing . . ."

Rose lifted her foot and placed it onto the first rail while her hand clutched onto the top railing for balance. She was bent over, her eyes closed, but once she had both feet on the bottom rail, she let go of her grip and stood up. She was shaky at first, but she felt Jack step up behind her and hold onto her waist for support.

"Hold on . . . hold on – keep your eyes closed!"

Jack's face brightened as he stood behind her. He felt his blonde hair flutter gracefully against the strength of the wind while the few strands of her red curled brushed against his cheek. He heard her giggle softly and checked to see that her eyes were still closed. He pressed his cheek against hers and smiled as he breathed in the soft scent of her perfume and listened to the steady sound of the Titanic slicing through the ocean. He held onto her wrists and gave them a gentle squeeze.

"Do you trust me?" he said, his voice soft against the wind.

Rose felt the warmth of his breath brush against her skin and it sent shivers down her spine. She smiled as she had trusted him from the moment they first met. She knew that from this moment on, there was no going back. He was her future and she did not doubt that he was going to give her a fulfilling life.

"I trust you," she said without a moment of hesitation.

Jack gave her every reason to trust him. He saw right through her mask, unlike Cal who only wanted to show her off as if she were a prized trophy. Her Mother did not care for her ambitions and wanted her to focus on her duty as a daughter and marry into a rich family to maintain their social status. She did not want to live her life pretending to be something she could never be. Jack helped her realize that she had the opportunity to live her life the way she wants to and not how she is expected to. In these past few days, she had given her heart to Jack and she knew that deep down inside, her love for him will burn through all eternity.

Jack smiled and carefully extended her arms. He noticed her turn her head in confusion, but he straightened her arms until they were spread out – like wings. Her shawl fluttered gracefully behind them while he placed his hands on her waist to steady her.

"All right," he whispered softly while his eyes focused on the horizon. "Open your eyes."

Rose pressed her lips together in anticipation as she slowly opened her eyes. A soft gasp escaped her lips when she saw the view before her – there was nothing but ocean in front of her. She did not feel like she was on a ship, it was as if she were flying with Jack right behind her.

"I'm flying!" she exclaimed with a beaming smile as she turned her head towards him, her eyes never leaving the horizon. "Jack."

He placed his hands over hers and intertwined their fingers together while he pressed his cheek against hers and smiled.

"Come Josephine, in my flying machine going up she goes, up she goes . . ."

Rose smiled and let out a soft laugh as she remembered the last time they sang this song together. It felt like she was living in a different world, standing here with the man she truly love. She turned her head and got lost in the depths of his ocean-blue eyes. He lowered their arms down in front of her and held her close, his hands still intertwined with hers.

He felt the whole world stand still as he leaned in and softly pressed his lips to hers in a tender kiss. He felt sparks flow throughout his body when she placed a hand on the back of his neck and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss into something more passionate.

He felt the whole world stand still as he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers in a tender kiss. He felt sparks flow throughout his body as she placed a hand on the back of his neck and pulled him closer, deepening the kiss. It was like they were meant to be together, despite the odds that were against them. His knew from this moment on, his heart belonged to Rose. Nothing in this world meant more to him than his love for her and her trust in him.

The two lovers soared through the sunset, sharing their true love's first kiss. Their worries soon faded away as they only became aware of each other – of their love and trust for one another. Trust is the one thing that kept their love strong. Trust was what made them believe that nothing in this world could ever come between them. They knew that no matter what happens in life, they will have each other and that was more than enough as they both had the one thing that they cherished most in each other – trust.

THE END
