Disclaimer: I don't own Fullmetal Alchemist. More's the pity…
He hadn't been the same since it happened. The man's heart was truly and completely broken.
The lights in his room were off. The only light came from the almost-full moon outside the window and from the crack under the door.
With a quiet creak, the door opened. Gracia entered. Her face bore evidence of many nights spent awake and crying. In her hands she carried a plate of food.
Maes, please…" She set the plate down on the bedside table. "Just eat something…?"
The man twitched.
With a sad sigh the woman left her grieving husband alone again. Alone in the dark.
"Alycia…" His voice cracked from disuse. His eyes were cried out.
With a shuddering sigh he looked at the framed picture sitting just beyond the plate. A little, round-faced girl smiled up at her broken father. He tried to smile back.
"Alycia…"
Maes Hughes reached a trembling hand under the pillow. He pulled out a pistol and stared at it numbly.
If he…
Gracia would be all alone…
But he'd see Alycia again…
He looked again at the picture of his baby girl. Looked again at the gun.
Hughes quietly reached towards the frame. Silently he pulled the picture out and pressed it against his chest.
The room was silent but for the thudding of his heart. But his heart had been shattered by the death of his angel. His heart was no longer whole. There were just pieces left in its place; just the splintered remains.
Still holding the photo against his sundered heart, he lifted the gun to his temple. And squeezed.
Me: Well, honestly, I had to don't you know? I just found myself wondering what Hughes would do if his daughter died. No, I don't know how she died in the story; the story wasn't about her, it was about Hughes. And it's not like I hate him or anything…I'm a fan of his actually… So why'd I kill him? 'Cause my shoulder angel was tied up and gagged by the angst that sits on my other shoulder. to Angst Where'd you put Angel, anyway?
Angst: shrugs Who cares? Let's go kill Mustang now!
