She's lying on the table.
Cold.
Pale.
Dead.
You want to touch her. You want to touch her and feel warmth and see her eyes open to reveal that it was all Greg's idea.
A joke.
And the whole team will suddenly be there and they'll laugh and you'll be embarrassed by the tears in your eyes but you'll forgive them because they're all there together just for you. They're back together and they're yours and you have everything you want in that moment.
But it's not a joke.
So you don't touch her.
Your chest aches and you want to scream and shout and curse and kill the bastard who did this to her.
You know your pulse has to be above seventy by now.
You wonder if you could die from an elevated pulse rate alone and you think that you should know the answer because it's science and science is your life and it should bring you these answers.
But you don't know the answer.
And you don't care.
She would care. She would reach out and caress your cheek and claim there was chalk as she brushed her thumb softly, ever so softly, against your face. You would know she was lying and she would know it as well but you wouldn't care because she was touching you and you wanted that.
You wanted her.
But you know that one touch would never have been enough. One touch of your hand on her own would have lead to your fingers on her cheek and your lips bruising hers until you were back in your townhouse running your hands across her stomach and your lips down her neck as she called out your name, arching up into you.
You would kiss away the bruises and scars that mar her smooth skin and you would tell her she was beautiful.
She is beautiful.
You want to tell her she's beautiful.
But you can't and she'll never know and you stare at her until your sight blurs and your hands stop shaking.
She's lying on the table, cold, pale and dead. And in that moment you realise she was right. You're too late.
She's gone and you're finally alone.
You feel sick.
