OK, people. Final chapter of the preliminary finals. Bear with me as I tear through this chapter, because things are going to get interesting after this.
"Please, Kaiba," said Yugi "Yami Marik's next to duel and you know what that means: He'll start a Shadow Game and banish his opponent's soul to the Shadow Realm! You have to do something about it!"
"I don't care," said Kaiba "He possesses a God card and I must have it! It is my only chance of ever defeating you, Yugi!"
"He'll never change," said Yugi as Kaiba walked away.
"In the Fifth round of the second Battle City Duel Monsters Tournament,' said Judge Komo "We have Makiru Koritaigo against Marik Ishtar!"
"Let's duel!"
"I'll go first," said Makiru. He was an average height man wearing a brown cloak. He had long gray hair that framed his face. In the back, his hair was held in a ponytail with a black tie. "I summon Steel Wall (0/2000)," A gigantic wall made of iron plates appeared in front of him. "And I set one card. Your move."
"I summon Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer (1800/700)," said Yami Marik "And I activate my trap card, Energy Drain. This card increases my monster's attack and defense by 200 for each card in your hand, making it a 3000/1900 until end of turn. Kycoo, attack his wall!"
"Activate trap card," said Makiru "Innocent Blood. This card forces both players to sacrifice a creature."
Yami Marik grumbled and sacrificed his Kycoo while Makiru sacrificed his Steel Wall.
"I set one card and end my turn," said Yami Marik.
"I summon Akki Lavarunner (500/500)," a small goblin wielding a mace appeared on the field "Akki, direct attack!" The goblin ran at Yami Marik and slashed at him with his mace.

MAKIRU: 10, 000
"And now, I activate Akki's special ability," said Makiru "When he deals combat damage to a player, he transforms into a more powerful creature. Arise, Tok-Tok, Volcano Born (1000/1000)!" The goblin grew taller and magical energy crackled in the palm of his hand. "Now I use my magic card, Lava Spike, dealing 1500 damage to you!" A giant fireball flew at Yami Marik, knocking him down. "And thanks to Tok-Tok's effect, when a red spell deals damage to you, you receive an additional 500 points of damage!"
YAMI MARIK: 7500
MAKIRU: 10, 000
"Ha," said Yami Marik "I activate my trap card, Nightmare Wheel!" A giant spiked wheel appeared and Tok-Tok disappeared in a flash of light, only to re-appear strapped to the wheel. "This trap card prevents your monster from untapping. As well, it deals 500 points of damage to you at the beginning of my turn."
"I set one card and end my turn," said Makiru.
YAMI MARIK: 7500
MAKIRU: 9500
"I summon Newdoria (1200/800)," said Yami Marik "I set one monster and one card. End of turn."
"I summon Junun Efreet (1500/1500)," said Makiru "To keep this monster in play, I must discard a card each turn. I set one card and end my turn."
YAMI MARIK: 7500
MAKIRU: 9000
"I summon Guardian Sphinx (1700/2400)," said Yami Marik "And I flip Summon Jowls of Dark Demise (200/100). When flip summoned, this creature allows me to take control of an opponent's monster until end of turn. This monster can attack my opponent's lifepoints directly!"
Makiru watched in horror as his Junun Efreet flew over to Yami Marik.
"Attack! Guardian Sphinx, Newdoria, Junun Efreet, and Jowls of Dark Demise!"
Makiru was blow back by the force of the attacks.
YAMI MARIK: 7500
MAKIRU: 4400
"You seem to have taken that quite well," said Yami Marik "Let's see how you fare in the Shadow Realm!" He raised the Millennium Rod and the arena grew dark as the duellists were transported to the shadows.
/How can he do that? I though we were in a virtual world/
The power of the Shadow Games extends beyond the realm of reality
"I don't know what card that was," said Makiru "But I'm not impressed. It's my turn. I summon Sengir Vampire (2000/2000). When this creature destroys another creature, it gains 500 attack and defense. Now I play Dark Banishing on your Guardian Sphinx." A blast of dark energy obliterated Yami Marik's creature. "Now I attack with Sengir Vampire!"
"I block your attack with Newdoria," said Yami Marik.
The vampire tore through Yami Marik's creature with its razor-sharp claws. It sank its fangs into the creature's neck and absorbed the creature's strength. Then it turned its attention to Yami Marik and slashed him across the face, leaving four red lines.
"End turn," said Makiru. He suddenly felt an unbearable pain and fell to the ground. "What was that?" he asked as his left leg disappeared.
YAMI MARIK: 5800
MAKIRU: 3900
"Fool, you are in the Shadow Realm. The pain you feel is the real pain being inflicted on your monsters, and when you loose, your soul will be sent to a place of unimaginable suffering and pain! I tribute your two monster to summon Lava Golem (3000/2500) on your side of the field." A giant made of flaming rocks appeared in front of Makiru. "This card inflicts 1000 damage to you on each of your turns. I set one card and end my turn."
At the beginning of his turn, the golem turned on its controller and spewed a column of fire at him, reducing his lifepoints by 1000. Makiru's torso was now the only part of his body left.

MAKIRU: 2900
"I thank you for giving me this creature because I play Shock, dealing 1500 damage to you, thanks to Tok-Tok's effect. Next, I sacrifice Tok-Tok to summon Laccolith Titan (3000/3000)."
YAMI MARIK: 4300
MAKIRU: 2400
"Next, I play Viridian Longbow, equipping it to Laccolith Titan. I attack with Laccolith Titan and Lava Golem."
"Activate quick play magic card, Dark Wall of Air!"
A dark fog crept over Yami Marik's side of the field. The Laccolith Titan stopped, puzzled and returned to Makiru's side of the field.
"This trap protects me from attacks for one turn," said Yami Marik.
"I set one card and end my turn."
YAMI MARIK: 4300
MAKIRU: 1900
"I play Trade Your Left Arm," said Yami Marik "This card allows me to discard my entire hand to place one card from my deck into my hand," he pulled a card out of his deck and slipped the rest of his hand into his graveyard. "End turn."
"Before the end of your turn," said Makiru "I play Dark banishing on Lava Golem, destroying it. Then I summon Platinum Angel (2000/2000)," A winged humanoid creature appeared on the field. It was a dazzling white and held a triangular shield in one hand and a long sword in the other. "As long as this creature is in play, I cannot loose the game, and you cannot win the game. Even if my lifepoints go below zero, I do not loose. I attack with Laccolith Titan and Sengir Vampire!"
"I block your titan with Jowls of Dark Demise," said Yami Marik "And I activate my trap card, Demon Mirror of Nightmares on your Sengir Vampire. By discarding one card, I negate the attack of your monster and deal 1000 damage to your lifepoints!"
YAMI MARIK: 1400
MAKIRU: 900
"End turn."
"I play Pot of Greed, drawing two cards, and I play Graceful Charity, drawing three and discarding two. Next, I set one monster and I play Vengeful Bog Spirit. Monsters can no longer attack on the turn they are summoned. End turn."
"I summon Nezumi Ronin (1500/500)," a rat appeared in samurai armor, wielding a sword. "I attack with Platinum Angel!"
"I block with my facedown card, Morphing Jar (800/700). When this card is flipped, all monsters in play are returned to their owner's decks. We each draw until we have the same number of monsters with an attack of 2000 or less as we put back into our decks. These monsters are Special Summoned facedown and the rest are discarded to the graveyard."
The duellists shuffled their monsters into their decks and they drew until they found their monsters. Yami Marik summoned one monster facedown; Makiru summoned two.
"End turn."
"I set one monster and summon Karate Man (1000/1000). End of turn."
"I sacrifice my facedown monster to summon Ishtan's Shade (2500/2500)! Next, I flip summon Black Knight (1000/1000). End of turn."
"I summon Sagan (1000/600) and flip summon 4-Starred Ladybug of Doom. Next, I play Change of Heart on your Black Knight! I could attack full out, but I have something better. I tribute all four of my monsters and all but one of my lifepoints to summon Anubis, God of Death (4000/5000)!" The sky grew dark. The earth split as a giant man with a jackal's head pulled himself from the ground. He was dressed in rich Egyptian clothing and held a staff in one hand and an ankh, the Egyptian symbol of life in his other hand. He threw his head back and gave a chilling howl.

MAKIRU: 900
"I activate my trap card," said Makiru "Terminate!"
"Fool! Traps do not work on Gods!" said Yami Marik as Makiru's spell bounced off Anubis' skin "Now I activate his special ability: once a turn, I may destroy any monster I play, dealing that monster's attack power in damage to its controller. Say good-bye to your soul! Anubis, destroy his Ishtan's Shade!" Anubis rose the anhk. A mysterious glow emanated from it. Makiru's creature fell to its knees and leaned over, dead.

MAKIRU: 0
"Now Shadow Realm, take his soul!"
There was a blinding flash and the darkness seemed to grow as it swirled around Makiru, blocking him from view. When the darkness cleared, the mage was still standing.
"What?" roared Yami Marik "How? You are no human!"
"That is true," said Makiru "I am a Phyrexian Sleeper Agent, a machine built by the Phyrexian."
"The winner of the Fifth round, Marik Ishtar!"
