Chapter 2: Dead to Me

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Amara couldn't believe it; the return address belonged to Kai. She could hear Rei in the bathroom adjoined to the room, so she quickly scanned the email.

         Hey Rei,

I hope you're not mad at me. I have my reasons for returning to Russia. I will try to get back to you guys if I can get away from my grandfather some how. The bastard's got me under heavy surveillance. Please don't speak of this email to anyone, especially Amara. She needs to stay away from me for now; I'll contact her when the time is right.

Kai

PS. Take care of her.

Amara finished reading just as she heard the toilet flush. She dashed back to the door and knocked, hoping Rei would think she had just gotten there.

"Rei?" she called, her heart pounding against her chest.

"Oh hey," Rei came to the door and opened it completely. "I was just checking my email. Mariah was supposed to write me."

He closed the open window that held Kai's letter and turned to leave the room with Amara.

"Is that your girlfriend in China?" Amara asked calmly.

"Yeah, well she's not really my girlfriend we're just really good friends." Rei insisted but Amara could see a tinge of pink in his cheeks.

They reached the top of the stairs; Rei took one step down but stopped when he realized Amara wasn't going to follow.

"I have to get something from my room," she told him. "I promised Kiki I would show her some pictures I took while you guys were in Japan."

Rei nodded and proceeded to the rec room alone.

Amara went to her room. Her heart was still pounding wildly. She knew where Kai was. All she had to do was hop a plane to Russia and she could see him. But he had said something about there being danger.

"Ah screw it!" Amara dashed to her closet grabbed her brown, sticker covered suitcase and tossed it on her unmade bed. She opened her drawers and pulled clothes out and threw them into the opened suitcase. But she stopped in the middle of chucking a hoody onto the pile.

"I can't leave now," Amara frowned, talking to her reflection. "The guys just got back and Kai did say it wasn't safe for me to go…" Amara tried to reason with herself. She knew she would have to think this through before she went and screwed things up royally for Kai.

So Amara put the filled suitcase under her bed and grabbed the picture envelopes off the desk and wandered back down to the rec room.

~*~*~*~Russia~*~*~*~

Kai took a deep breath in and opened the to his grandfather's study. Voltaire and his great grandmother were seated waiting for him.

"I'll do it," Kai said, no emotion in his voice. "It's my family duty to accept."

"Ah, I knew you would," Voltaire grinned and smacked Kai on the back.

"You will not regret your choice Kai," his great grandmother spoke softly. Her eyes seemed to penetrate his calm exterior and see that the thought truly terrified him.

Kai swallowed and nodded to acknowledge her words.

"Well there are many things to prepare," Voltaire said excitedly. "There will be the formal announcement in a few weeks and the move and so much more."

Kai left his grandfather to work out all the details. He didn't really care; he just wanted the hard stuff over with. He knew now that he never could return to how his life used to be. He would probably never blade again. Which meant he would probably never see Amara again either.

~*~*~*~ Amara's House~*~*~*~

Amara sat down on the couch beside Cat and Nicholai. She could hear the playful banter between Max, Tyson, and Rei but none of it really registered in her mind. All she could think about was the email from Kai and how she could see him again. And by the time everyone was ready to call it a night Amara had a plan all figured out.

"Bye Ams, we'll be by tomorrow," Kiki said, breaking Amara free of her thoughts. Nicholai, Mico and Kiki were heading home for the night.

"Bye…wait why aren't you guys staying too?" Amara asked, realizing how stupid it would be for them to go home just to be spending all their days at her house and how rude it was of her for not inviting them to stay.

"You didn't invite us," Mico chuckled at the surprised look on Amara's face. She had noticed that Amara had been pretty out of it for the last three hours or so.

"Sorry guys," Amara blinked, trying to clear her thoughts. "You're staying here."

"I'll get Jackson to set up another guest room," Cat offered, pulling Nicholai along with her.

"Nicholai can stay in the room with Rei," Amara said. "If that's okay with you?"

         "Yeah no problem," Rei answered.

"Goodnight," Rei and Max said as they left the room. Tyson followed after giving Kiki a quick kiss. Kenny did the same to Mico before leaving as well.

"I'm gonna head to bed too," Amara said to Kiki and Mico, who were the only people left in the room. "It's good to have you guys home." She pulled her two friends into a hug.

"Yeah, you're house feels like home," Kiki mumbled, her face in Amara's neck.

"It does, doesn't it," Mico agreed smiling.

"I'm glad," Amara smiled back. "You two should go to bed too, you must be jet lagged."

"Yes mother," Kiki sniggered, sticking her tongue out at Amara.

"Goodnight Keeks," Amara chuckled, walking up the stairs to her bedroom. "No going into Tyson's room either."

"Like I would do such a thing," Kiki feigned a shocked expression. "Besides Max is in there too."

Amara rolled her eyes. "I'll see you in the morning."

Amara closed her bedroom door and changed into her green plaid boxer shorts and black tank top that she usually wore to bed. She took her hair out of its buns and braided it in one long braid that fell passed her butt. Then she waited. She waited till she heard all of her guests go to bed.

Uncle Dickie had been called into the BBA office, which usually meant he wouldn't be home till the wee hours of the morning.

When the house fell silent, Amara crept out of her room and down the hall to the stairs. She reached the landing without attracting any attention. Her feet padded across the marble front entry to the office. Not just any office, it was the office where Uncle Dickie kept all his files on Beyblading and more specifically his beyblading team.

As nonchalantly as she could Amara turned on the desk lamp and opened one of the filing cabinets.

"A…B…C…" Amara flipped through the designated tabs. "Ah… Hiwatari."

Amara pulled the folder out of the cabinet and took a seat in the comfy desk chair. There wasn't a lot of information in the file but she found what she was looking for. She couldn't help herself from looking at the other information in the file. It made her realize how little she truly knew about Kai's personal life. She knew all his stats from watching him battle on TV but there was information in the file that she was sure the other BladeBreakers had no idea about.

A sound in the hallway outside the door made Amara freeze in her seat. She strained to hear where the person was. Lucky for her the footsteps moved towards the kitchen instead of the office. Amara let out a long breath; she hadn't even realized she had been holding it in.

As quietly as she had entered, Amara put the folder back in its place and crept to the kitchen. There was light shining under the large swinging door. Amara could hear someone rummaging through the cupboards looking for something. She opened the door, but the fridge door blocked her view of the intruder.

Suddenly it occurred to her, she had no idea who the person was and she was completely unarmed she didn't have her blade with her. So she resorted to the knife block resting on the counter near the door. She turned around to face the intruder who turned around at the same time.

"Ahhhhh," they both screamed at the same time. Amara dropped the knife, which fell to the floor with a clatter along with all the food.

"Tyson! What the hell?" Amara gasped, trying to slow down her racing heart.

"Amara! What's with the knife?" he hissed back. "Do you want to kill me?"

"No! No I thought… I was… why are you down here?" she stuttered still fighting for breath after the adrenaline rush.

"I'm hungry obviously!" Tyson rolled his eyes and tried to salvage the food he had dropped on the floor.

"It's a little late."

"Haven't you ever heard of a midnight snack?"

"At three in the morning?"

"Hunger pains know no hour," he drawled, scooping the food onto a plate. "And you're the one that scared the shit out of me. What are you doing down here?"

"I was hungry too," she lied.

"And you're bitching to me about it being too late," Tyson rolled his eyes at her again and sat down on one of the bar stools around the island.

"Shut up and pass me one of those sausage rolls," Amara grinned taking a stool beside him.

"I'm shocked you didn't wake anyone else up with that scream of yours," Tyson said through bites of cold fried chicken.

"My scream?!?" Amara laughed. "You were the one screaming bloody murder."

"Well it sure looked like you were out to murder me the way you had that chef's knife held," Tyson shot back in defense. Amara only laughed harder and Tyson joined in. They ate in silence for the next few minutes before Amara pushed back her stool to leave.

"Sorry for scaring you," Amara offered her apologies one more time before leaving.

"Yeah me too," Tyson said, getting up from his seat as well. "Have a good sleep." He opened his arms for her to hug him.

"Nite Tyson," Amara hugged him. "I'm glad you guys are back."

"Me too," Tyson agreed, taking a step back from each other. "I think I just might stay."

"I know Kiki would like that," Amara smiled.

"Yeah," Tyson smiled to himself. "I'm glad she got to come and see Japan." Amara nodded. "Is it weird?"

"Is what weird?" Amara asked, confused by the serious look on his face.

"Having us here without…" he paused. "Without…"

"Kai?" Amara finished for him.

"Yeah, cause we're here and he's not."

"I got over that a while ago Tyson," Amara shrugged it off. She turned to leave the room.

"You know he wouldn't have left unless it was a matter of life or death?" Tyson grabbed her arm so she was looking at him. "You do understand that right?"

"It sure felt like I died when he took off like that so it doesn't much matter if he left to protect me," Amara answered coldly. "Everyone I love leaves me, it's nothing I'm not use to."

Tyson dropped his hand from her arm. "Amara…"

"Goodnight."

"Morning Tyson," Rei came into the kitchen the next morning around ten. "You look like shit."

Tyson only grunted his response. He hadn't gotten any sleep after talking to Amara. He sat up all night thinking about what she said.

"Didn't sleep well eh?" Max chuckled, coming in behind Rei.

"Try not at all," Tyson grumbled glaring at the smiling pair.

"What were you up to last night?" Max winked.

"He better not have been up to anything," Nicholai said, being a protective brother.

"Ah f*** off guys, I just couldn't sleep," Tyson's tone was final. The room remained silent until the girls entered a few minutes later.

"Guy's Amara's gone!" Kiki shrieked.

"What!?!?" All the guys were on their feet in seconds. All thoughts of breakfast completely forgotten.

"Her car is here," Cat looked close to tears.

"You don't think she…." Rei let his thought trail off.

"What? You don't think she what?" Kiki asked urgently.

"I think she might have…"

"Well good morning y'all," Amara burst through the swinging door, a huge smile spread on her face. "What we talking about?"

Every other occupant of the room stared at her as she helped herself to the breakfast buffet laid out on the counter by the cook.

"Where were you?" Mico asked calmly. She was the first one able to find her voice. Max was still staring at her with his mouth unattractively gaping.

"Well mother," Amara replied a little irritated with the interrogation. "I went for a walk."

"You went for a walk,' Mico repeated slowly, getting the feel for her response. "A walk." Mico looked at everyone else as if to evaluate whether or not Amara was telling the truth.

"Geez, guys, what's the matter with you all?" Amara rolled her eyes at them as she took her seat at the counter.

"You just left without telling anyone. We had no idea where you went. What if something had happened to you?" Kiki spat the words unable to hold her anger in any longer.

"I'm not a child, I'm fully capable of taking care of myself," Amara was on her feet going head to head with Kiki.

"Well you haven't proven yourself in the past."

"What is that suppose to mean? I've managed to live without you for the past six months I think I can go for a walk without you."

"Enough!" Mico stepped in between them. The guys stood on the sides, not daring to move for fear of having their heads bitten off. Amara and Kiki stepped back and let Mico speak. "Kiki calm down. Amara you're our friend and we love you. We got a little carried away that's all."

"I thought maybe you ran away to find Kai," Rei spoke from behind Amara. The shock of what he said was visible in her eyes.

"Kai is dead to me," Amara said without turning to face him.

"Look at me and say the same thing," Rei challenged.

Amara turned to look into Rei's golden eyes. "Kai is dead to me."
