Chapter 3: Edie

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Amara hated lying to her friends like that but certain times called for certain measures and this was one of those times. If they knew she was planning on finding him they would stop her in a second. Especially Rei who had gotten the email from Kai in the first place.

Amara pulled the half packed suitcase out from under her bed and continued to add more clothing to the pile. She had made her decision; she would go to Russia and find Kai. The relationship needed to be settled. All she wanted was answers and then she would leave. That's what she kept telling herself anyway.

         KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Amara covered the suitcase with her comforter and walked across the room to answer the door.

"Rei? What's up?" Amara asked, a little taken a back by his presence. It looked like he was just about to go to bed. He was dressed in only blue boxers and a white muscle shirt.

"You are not a good liar Amara Jones," he smirked, crossing his arms against his chest.

"Who said I lied?" Amara replied, trying to act unfazed by his question.

"Your eyes give you away," Rei said as if the answer was common knowledge. "Eyes are windows to the soul and yours gave you away."

"Did they now? And what exactly did they give away Mr. Kon?" Amara asked innocently, even though she knew what he was getting at. She was planning on playing dumb for as long as she could get away with.

"Dead to you is he? I don't think so sweetheart. You read the email he sent me and now you're planning on going to Russia to find him," Rei basically repeated her whole plan to her as if he had read her thoughts. "You obviously didn't read the message too well cause you would have seen the part where he said NOT to go to him."

"Listen Rei, I don't expect you to understand but I want answers from him." Amara pleaded with him to understand. "You can't say that if you were me you wouldn't want to know why?"

"Amara…" Rei sighed. He knew it wasn't going to be easy to convincer her, she was stubborn.

"I just want answers," Amara said, putting a hand on Rei's crossed arms. "I need to know why." Rei's eyes were down cast, looking her hand.

"I promised him I would protect you," Rei said, trying to hide the emotion in his voice. It hurt him to see her hurting but he had to honor Kai's wishes and keep her away from Russia. "I can't let you go."

Amara inhaled and let the breath out slowly. Rei thought she was close to giving in. She looked utterly defeated but she needed to understand that it was for her own good.

Out of nowhere Amara's had rose and hit a pressure point on his neck causing him to collapse unconscious.

"I'm sorry Rei," she said sadly to his motionless form. "I won't let you or anybody get in my way." She moved Rei so he was laying flat on his back just inside her doorway. It wouldn't be long before he was up or someone found him so she had to be quick. Her suitcase was pack in a matter of seconds. She pulled on her black leather jacket over her white t-shirt and jeans and headed for the stairs.

~*~*~*~

"2078…2079…2080…holy shit!" standing before her was the largest house she had ever seen. It was three o'clock in the afternoon. Amara had just gotten off her plane and had headed straight to find the Hiwatari house. It turned out to be more of a palace.

"I take it you've never seen the Hiwatari's place before?" a male voice came from behind her.

Amara shook her head, her sapphire eyes still wide with shock. "I thought my house was big."

"Yeah so did I until I saw this place." The male surveyed the small curly haired blonde standing before him. She look like she had just gotten off a plane, he could tell she was a tourist by the map in her hands and the suitcase on the ground beside her feet. He also looked over her clothes and liked her motorcycle chick style very much. "You're not from around here are you?" He knew it sounded like a lame pick up line but the little beauty interested him.

"What tipped you off?" She chuckled, turning to fully face him. Her sapphire eyes caught his attention almost instantly.

"Could have been one of many things but most locals have seen or at least heard of the enormity that is the Hiwatari mansion," the tall red head smiled at her. Amara felt her cheeks heat up. "I'm Tala by the way." He extended hand to her, a hand that was covered with a fingerless glove.

Tala was by far one of the best looking guys a girl could lay eyes on. He was tall and well built with uniquely styled, flaming red hair. He wore baggy black pants, a black Linkin Park t-shirt and a black blazer, which was adorned with pins and patches. His clothes were quite the dark contrast to his bright hair.

"Edwina but you can call me Edie," she shook his hand. Edwina was Amara's middle name, passed down from her great grandmother. Amara wasn't sure what possessed her to use it but it seemed like a good idea

"A pleasure to meet you," he raised her hand to his lips and kissed it.

"So…do you know the Hiwatari's?" Amara asked, trying her best to sound nonchalant about it.

"I do, old friends of the family," Tala replied. "What about you? Have you had the pleasure of making their acquaintance or are you just some crazy beyblading fan out to stalk young master Kai?" Amara could hear the sarcasm in his voice but his tone had changed slightly when he said Kai's name.

"Neither actually," Amara fibbed. "I know the name Kai Hiwatari of course and I thought why not check it out while I'm here."

"Right…stalker," Tala teased giving her a friendly poke in the arm.

"I am no such thing," Amara answered tying her best to sound pissed off but she couldn't help but laugh.

"Keep telling yourself that miss Edie," Tala continued to tease her. He was very much enjoying the melodious sound of her laugh. She wasn't like any girl he had ever met, she actually laughed. Most of the girls that he knew were to stuck up.

"I will and it really is a magnificent house," she changed the subject, turning her gaze off Tala to the house.

"Would you like to go inside? I'm actually here to make a house call. I live just down the road and thought I would visit my old friend Kai. Haven't been able to see him since he got back from Canada," Tala told her. "I was away as well visiting some friends in Australia for six months."

"I don't think so," Amara shook her head causing her chin length ringlets to swish in front of her eyes. "I should really be checking into my hotel… and I wouldn't want to be a burden during your reunion."

"You would not be a burden my dear," Tala assured her.

"Maybe some other time," Amara gave him a smile that showed off her white teeth before picking up her suitcase and turning to leave.

"Where are you staying?" Tala's persistence stopped her. "Maybe I could show you around town."

"Maybe… I'll come to you instead," Amara said turning to face the tall red head.

"Sure, my house is the white one on the corner," He pointed, to make sure she knew exactly which one he was referring to.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow maybe," Amara gave him one last smile and walked back down the street to the bus stop.

Tala sighed, watching the beautiful blond walk away.

"Hitting on commoners now eh Red?" Tala turned at the sound of his familiar nickname to face a tall silver haired teen. The voice belonged to none other than Kai Hiwatari himself dressed in baggy jeans, a red t-shirt, and a beat up brown leather jacket. No one would think by looking at either boy that they lived in any of the massive houses along the posh boulevard.

"Can you blame me, Hiwatari? She's gorgeous," Tala watched Amara get on the bus and disappear around the corner.

"No I don't blame you for being uninterested in all the snotty rich bitches around here," Kai kicked a rock on the ground in front of him, not meeting Tala's eye. He wasn't about to tell the other boy about his "common" girl back in Canada. "So what's her name?"

"Edie." Kai nodded and walked up to the security guard in front of the gate. The giant steel gate opened with a clank and Tala followed Kai up the cobble stone driveway to the house.

"Caught her gawking at your house, thought she might be one of your crazy fans," Tala chuckled jabbing Kai in the arm.

"You mean to say she did recognize you, the great Tala Valkov, captain of the Demolition Boys?" Kai said, his tone teasing.  He held open the door for Tala to enter the large foyer. Kai handed his jacket to one of the butlers and lead the way up the stairs to his wing of the house. Kai had a large tv/rec room that no one but him used.

Tala and Kai had been teammates for a short while when Kai quit the Bladebreakers. When he left the Demolition Boys it had put some strain on their friendship but once Tala saw that someone, Boris, had been running their team he decided Kai had good reason for leaving and Tala broke his team away from the tyrant leader.

"Nah, but I'm glad she didn't. I was such a jackass on all those videos of the tournaments," Tala shrugged taking a seat on one of the beanbag chairs that were strewn about the large room.

The large room had bright red walls but they were hard to see in some places because of all the posters of various rock bands. One of the walls was a large mural painting of a fiery phoenix, which was actually Kai's beloved bit beast Dranzer.  There was one white wall at the end of the room that served as the screen for the projector and plenty of beanbag chairs and couches to sit on.

"You wouldn't want her to get the wrong impression," Kai sneered, taking a seat across from Tala on one of the black leather couches.

"So anyway, enough about me. I came here to see you," Tala scowled. "How was your trip to Canada?"

"Nothing exciting, we had to forfeit the tournament, lost to a local team," Kai replied, trying his best to make it sound like no big deal and trying to discourage deep questions. "How was Australia?"

"Boring as hell," Tala said frowning. "Couldn't even pick up a hot local."

"You poor boy," Kai said with fake sympathy.

"How about you? Manage to get it on with any Canadian chicks?" Tala smirked, waiting for his friends answer. He noticed something in Kai's expression change but decided not to comment on it.

"None that were worth anything," Kai finally answered.

"What about that Champion chick, Amery or something?"

"Amara," the name was out of his mouth before he had time to realize what he had said.

"Yeah, did you meet her? She looked like quite the babe from all the videos I saw. Looked more like a tomboy but she couldn't even hide a body like that under baggy boy clothes," Tala went on, not even noticing his friends menacing expression. Kai wasn't too pleased with the way Tala was objectifying Amara.

"Excuse me Master Kai?" a maid gently knocked on the slightly opened door. "Your grandfather and great grandmother would like to speak with you."

"Thanks I'll be there as soon as I show out my guest," Kai replied, some what relieved to end his friends assessment of Amara.

"Guess that's my cue to blow this Popsicle stand," Tala got up and headed to the doorway that the maid had just vacated.

"I get to go discuss party plans with the old bastard yet again," Kai sighed and followed his friend.

"Party? What kind of party?"

"Stupid masquerade thing, so they can make the announcement," Kai rolled his eyes. The masquerade was not his idea.

"Right…Sounds like it could be kind of cool. I better be getting an invitation," Tala ordered.

"Of course, you think I'm gonna spend the whole night alone. I need someone with me to make fun of everyone," said Kai just as they reached the front doors. "Hey why not bring that new chick of yours."

"Will do," Tala waved and walked down the driveway to the street.

"You wanted to see me?" Kai asked his grandfather and great grandmother once he had entered the room they were in. They were sitting in the elegant living room enjoying their tea.

"Yes Kai dear," his great grandmother, who he was told to call Lady Catherine, greeted him with a sweet smile. She had taken an immediate liking to the young man and was very pleased with her choice. "We were just discussing about how after the announcement it's going to be a media frenzy around here."

"So you want to send me away?" he tried to keep the enthusiasm out of his voice. Getting away from his grandfather was something he could look forward to.

"Well away from this house at least. Maybe hide you at one of your friend's houses," Lady Catherine continued to explain, not allowing Voltaire to get a word in. "For a day or two, then you will have to meet the press."

"Sounds good but can I get away from Russia?" He didn't want to get his hopes up but it never hurt to try. Well it use to but since Lady Catherine showed up things had been going better.

"Absolutely not!" Voltaire took that moment to break into the conversation. He was on his feet and standing over Kai, the look in his eye menacing. "You want to go back to her."

"Sit down and shut up Voltaire!" Lady Catherine snapped. Voltaire gave Kai one last evil look and took his seat again. "Kai has my permission to go wherever he chooses as long as he's back in three days. He deserves it, once its all official he won't necessarily have the chance to go much of anywhere."

Voltaire grumbled his agreement and shot one more glare in Kai's direction. Kai couldn't help but smirk at the older man. With Lady Catherine on his side Voltaire couldn't touch him.

"That settles it then, Kai my dear you can return to Canada for three days after the masquerade," she said, her voice final. "You may go back to whatever you were doing." Kai nodded; glad to be dismissed from his grandfather's presence.

He wandered back to his rec room and turned on his computer. A message popped up telling him he had an email. Kai clicked on the box and the email came up on the screen.

Kai

She's there!

Rei

OH SHIT!
