Chapter 4: Telltale Eyes
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Amara flopped down on the uncomfortable bus seat and tried to calm her racing heart. She had seen Kai over Tala's shoulder. Lucky for her, his eyes were occupied on the rock he was kicking across the sidewalk. The bus had come just in time for her to make her escape.
Amara wasn't planning on staying at a hotel. She would pay her old friend Jules a visit. Jules lived in a house a few blocks away from Kai's. The bus stopped right in front of the large stone house and Amara got off. She discarded the blonde wig and shook out her long red hair. She would explain the wig and name change to Jules later.
DING DONG DANG DONG!!!
Amara rang the bell and waited. She was expecting a servant to open the door and was a little surprised with Jules was the one to open the large oak door.
"Amara Jones?!?!" The girl's green eyes lit up with surprise and joy. "How…when…why…?"
"Hi Jules," Amara laughed and embraced the stunned girl. "Glad to see you too."
Jules was about the same height as Amara with chestnut hair that fell about chest length, which was adorned with blonde, red and darker brown streaks. She had emerald green eyes with thick black lashes. They had met about five years earlier at a beyblading tournament.
"Hi," Jules returned the greeting but her voice was still disbelieving. "What are you doing here?" She held Amara out at an arms length so she could look into her friend's face.
"Can't I come see my old friend Jules?" Amara asked innocently batting her eyelashes around her sapphire eyes.
"Most people could but not you Miss Jones," Jules stared with accusingly emerald eyes. "What are you up to?"
"Up to? Up to?" Amara gaped at the other girl, trying to sound shocked and hurt. "I'm hurt that I can't come and visit without being accused of being up to something."
"Sure you are…so what's the plan?" Jules asked as if it was an everyday thing that Amara showed up at her door.
They left the front entry of the house and walked up one of the two spiral staircases to the top floor. Amara waited till Jules had closed the door to her large bedroom before telling her the whole story. Jules listened patiently, with a few nods and huhs in the appropriate spots.
"So he doesn't know you're here but some how you're going to get into his house and talk to him?" Jules looked skeptical.
"I have an in though," Amara jumped off the bed from her cross-legged position and walked over to where she had disposed of her luggage. She pulled the wig out of the bag, careful not to let Jules see it, and ran into Jules's large walk in closet.
"Meet Edie." Amara fluffed up the golden curls that fell just past her chin.
"Very cute but how is Edie going to get us into the Hiwatari Mansion?"
"Well miss Edie ran into Tala Valkov and he showed quite an interest in her and just so happens to be a close friend of young master Hiwatari," Amara smiled.
"Not a bad coincidence but how is that going to help later when Tala finds out you lied to him?" Jules asked her voice wavering on Tala's name.
"I didn't mean to lie to him…it just kinda came out," Amara answered sheepishly, pulling the blonde wig off her head. "And I'm not interested in Tala anyway, I want Kai."
"I know that and you know that but do Tala and Kai know that?"
"I hope Kai knows that," Amara sighed and sat back down on the bed beside her friend who was sprawled out on her stomach. "But no, Tala has no clue that I even know Kai let alone love him."
"Well this is quite the soap opera you've gotten yourself into isn't it Edie," Jules sat up and snatched the wig from Amara. "So what's my part?" Jules covered her brown hair with the wig and made a funny face.
"Hmmm….I still need to write you in," Amara smiled tugging the wig off her friend's head.
"I'd willingly take Tala off your hands," Jules smirked, shaking out her chestnut hair and running her fingers through it.
"That could work." Amara nodded, thinking it over in her head. "But first Edie needs to see him again."
The next morning Amara left Jules's house dressed as Edie. Jules walked with her to the corner of Kai and Tala's street.
"Good luck," Jules gave her a reassuring hug. "I hope your plan works out."
"This isn't planned yet, I'm making this all up as I go," Amara laughed. "The plan will come later when Tala gives me an opening to get to Kai."
"Right," Jules raised an eyebrow. "Have a fun day with Tala, try not to make him fall in love with you."
"What!?!? He is not going to fall in love with me," Amara shrugged. "I can't make the guy fall in love with me after only seeing me for about ten minutes the day before."
"Well, obviously you don't know your own strength after all you did make the elusive Kai Hiwatari fall in love with you," Jules smirked giving her friend a nudge in the arm.
"Whatever," Amara gave her friend a small glare.
"See you later," Jules gave a small wave and then disappeared around the corner.
Amara took a deep breath and pressed the gate intercom.
"Can I help you?" a flat voice asked. Amara could hear the whirling sound of a security camera moving to look at her.
"I'm here to see Tala," Amara replied a little reprehensive.
"Name?"
"Edie." There was a buzzing sound and then the steel gates clanked open. Amara started to walk up the stone driveway but was stopped half way.
"Edie, you came?!?" Tala was walking down the driveway towards her. Navy pants that were the same style as his black ones and a dark red t-shirt, topped off with an army style jacket replaced his all black attire of the day before.
"I was never planning not to," Amara smiled, making her sapphire eyes light up. His turquoise eyes roamed over her sweet oval face but wandered down her body. She was wearing black cargo pants, a blue and gold jersey style t-shirt and the same leather jacket as the day before.
"Tala Valkov did you just up me?" Amara's mouth gaped open, but Tala could see the teasing in her eyes.
"I think I did," he tried to match her shocked tone.
"Well don't let it happen again," Amara turned and walked down the driveway to the road leaving Tala standing alone.
"Wait a second," Tala jogged to catch up before falling in step beside her. "How did you know my last name? I don't remember telling it to you."
"That's because you didn't," Amara answered. "You really thought I wouldn't know the great Tala Valkov? I'm shocked. After all I am a crazed beyblading fan."
Tala laughed. "Have you always been this cheeky?"
"Oh yes," Amara smiled up at him. " Especially to famous people." This made Tala laugh even harder. Amara smiled with him but it faded when Jules words came to mind. "Try not to make him fall in love with you…"
****************
Kai couldn't believe it. He stared at the computer screen reading those two words over and over , She's there. His shock soon turned to anger. How could Rei let this happen? And most importantly how did she know where he was exactly? He tried to push the questions to the back of his mind. He needed to find her before his grandfather found out she was in Russia. Kai didn't even want to think about what his grandfather would do when he found out. Kai grabbed his brown leather jacket and dashed out of the house.
****************
"I'm glad you're here to translate for me," Amara said, she saw a slight red in Tala's cheeks. "Other wise these guys would be swindling me for sure."
Amara and Tala had spent most of the day walking around the street market. Amara had tried to keep the conversation on Tala as much as possible, which he didn't seem to mind so much but he did try to ask her about herself. She would brush off his questions turning his attention to something around them.
"Nah they wouldn't do that," Tala brushed it off. "But they might not give you as good of a deal as they tend to give some of us frequent shoppers."
"I see," Amara smiled, trying on a pair of sunglasses.
"Hey look there's Kai. Kai!" Tala waved franticly trying to get his friend's attention. Kai turned at the sound of his name and smiled a bit at the sight of his friend. Amara saw him walking over and turned so her back was facing him.
"Hey man what brings you out here?" Tala asked, hitting his fist against Kai's in their usual greeting.
"Looking…" Kai spotted the girl standing behind Tala. "For something. What about you? I thought your dad took away your allowance since you charged so much in Australia?" Kai looked at the sapphire eyes staring at him in the mirror by the sunglasses rack.
"He did," Tala noticed his friend staring at something over his shoulder. "Oh this is Edie." Tala whipped the small blonde around to face Kai. Amara managed to grab the darkest pair of sunglasses on the rack before Tala forced her to look at Kai.
They stared at each other for a moment. Amara took in the sight of him. He hadn't changed that much in the last six months. The same silver blue hair, shark fins, and steely silver eyes. Eyes that were trying to penetrate the blackness of her sunglasses.
"Nice to meet you," Kai extended a hand for her to shake.
"You too," Amara answered. She hoped he wouldn't be able to feel her pounding heart by shaking her hand. Amara could see him staring at her, while still holding her hand. Tala noticed his friend's look and Amara's discomfort and tried to change the subject.
"So Kai did you work everything out for the party?" Kai dropped Amara's hand and turned his attention onto the guy who was talking to him.
"Yeah, Voltaire and Lady Catherine basically have it all worked out anyway. I think they even picked out my clothes," Kai sighed, running his fingers through his silver blue bangs. Amara was watching him from behind the black glasses. He was right there and she couldn't do anything. Part of her wanted to hug him and kiss him breathless but the feeling that was even stronger than that was the desire to punch him in the face.
"So all you have to do is show up then?" Tala smirked.
"Basically, show up, dance with some of the bitchy socialites and stand beside Lady Catherine for the announcement."
"My heart bleeds for you," Amara rolled her eyes but neither Tala nor Kai could see because she kept them well hidden behind the glasses.
Kai snapped his attention back to the small blonde. She seemed to familiar to him but he knew that she wasn't from around here.
"Where did you say you were from?" Kai asked, his eyes narrowed as he spoke. He took a step closer to her. Amara could tell he was trying to see over the glasses that hid her tell tale eyes.
"I didn't," Amara answered flatly. "Tala can you ask the man how much he wants for these glasses?" Tall nodded and turned to speak to the man in charge of the stall. Amara turned as well so she could get away from Kai's look.
"The states?" Kai asked moving to stand beside her, leaning his elbows on the counter.
"Canada." Amara answered without looking at him.
"Eastern?"
"Western."
"BC?"
"Alberta." Amara handed the right amount of money to Tala who had been to busy talking to the salesman to really listen to their conversation.
"Alright, you are now the proud owner of those lovely glasses," Tala smirked at his pretty companion.
"Thanks," Amara smiled back.
"Well…I'm gonna get going, I still have to find…what Lady Catherine sent me out for," Kai turned to go back in the direction he had been heading before Tala had called him over. "I'll see you Friday night right?"
"Wouldn't miss it," Tala answered.
"Edie, you're welcome to come along as well," Kai offered. Amara did a little happy dance, inside of course. This party was the in she needed. It would be crowded enough that she could sneak him away without drawing too much attention to themselves.
"Sounds like fun," Amara tried to keep her tone neutral, like she had been the whole time they conversed.
"I don't know about fun but it could be rather interesting," Kai shared a smile with Tala and then turned to leave.
"You don't think he'd mind if my friend came along do you?" Amara asked Tala once they had started walking again.
"I don't think so…I didn't know you were with someone…I mean I wouldn't have wanted to take you away from them," Tala stuttered.
"Oh no she doesn't mind, I staying with her and actually she was the one who encouraged me to take you up on your offer of showing me around," Amara assured him placing a hand on his arm. "But I think if she got invited to Kai's party it could make up for any possible hurt feelings."
A wide grin crossed Tala's face. "No problem, you can both be my dates." Amara smiled back. It looked like everything was going to go her way for once.
