Chapter 5: Dead Give Away

The week continued in about the same fashion. Amara, disguised as Edie of course, would spend her days sightseeing with Tala and her evenings with Jules getting everything ready for the masquerade. Finally the night came, Jules had spent most of the day getting Amara ready and herself of course.

"Ah, I can't believe it's finally here," Amara exclaimed nervously.

"Hold still or I'm going to burn you," Jules warned, letting a curled tendril fall beside Amara's face.

"Sorry," Amara stopped her jittering. "I'm excited and nervous and scared…very scared."

"Maybe if you just didn't speak I could get your hair done," Jules grumbled. Amara had such long hair that it was getting rather tedious to curl it all.

"Sorry…again," Amara stared at her reflection in the large bathroom mirror. Amara had insisted on wearing her hair down since the dress that Jules had helped her pick out was backless.

The corset style bodice wrapped around her neck and her lower back but left the rest of her back and shoulders exposed. The long skirt poofed out princess style and fell down to the floor. It was a deep blue to accent Amara's eyes. Jules' was a similar style but it was not backless and instead of blue it was a soft shade of pink.

"Finally," Jules let the last curl fall into place down Amara's back. "Girl you have WAY too much hair."

"I know," Amara grinned. "I planned it that way so you would have to spend two hours torturing my poor head."

"Stop being a smart ass and help me do up this dress," Jules kicked the stool Amara as sitting on. Amara complied and helped Jules zip up her pink dress.

"Alright, wig," Amara handed Jules the short curly blonde wig. "Colored contacts."

"The things I do for you," Jules grumbled taking the contact container from Amara's hand. She opened the lid and proceeded to put the colored contacts in.

"You know the deal, you're Edie and I'm Edie's friend to Tala and obviously Amara to Kai," Amara stated jumping up to sit on the counter.

"You make it all sound so simple," Jules said, finishing with the contacts and putting her brown hair up so she could put on the blonde wig. "You sure Kai will recognize you before anyone else does? And what happens if Tala figures out that I'm not you pretending to be someone else?"

"Tala won't figure it out," Amara rolled her eyes and helped the other girl get the wig on just right. "And Kai's just too damn smart for his own good. He'll suspect I'm me without even really thinking it through. My hair is a dead give away."

"I hope you're right, but I have my doubts," Jules admitted, handing Amara her strappy sandals. "I don't really sound like you considering I have an accent and so do you. You may not think you do but to us here in Russia you do."

"Jules, Jules, Jules, you think I didn't consider all that already?" Amara gave her a knowing smirk. "Don't underestimate a girl with a mission honey." Amara went into Jules' adjoining bedroom and began to rummage through her suitcase.

"You're a little frightening sometimes you know that."

"Oh I know, I'm just pure evil," Amara smiled and held out two choker necklaces. They were both made out of a thick ribbon. One was the same baby pink as Jules' dress and the other the same deep blue as Amara's. The necklaces were adorned with a large diamond flower.

"They're gorgeous but how is this going to solve our voice problem?"

"These are a work of genius created by a friend of mine back home. You see the diamond flower is actually a voice changer that taps right into your voice box," Amara flipped over one of the necklaces to show Jules what she was talking about. "The pink one is programmed to make you sound like me and the other one to make me sound more Russian." Jules turned so Amara could put the choker around her neck. "Be prepared to sound like a totally different person." Jules did the same for Amara and they stood there waiting for the other to talk first.

"Jules, honey, your date is here," Jules' mother knocked on the door.

"Be right down mom," Amara answered for Jules, her voice sounding very Russian.

"Okay that was the freakiest thing ever," Jules chuckled. "Is that my voice?!?" She put a hand on her throat. "Is that my voice?"

"Better get use to it cos you're stuck that way for the rest of the night," Amara laughed, her voice held a thick Russian accent. "Well we better be going, we don't want to keep Tala waiting."

Tala was waiting patiently at the foot of the grand staircase. He was dressed smartly in a back suit; his tie was bright red, almost the same red as his hair.

"You look lovely," Tala complimented the girl that he thought was Edie.

"Thank you," Jules smiled, trying her best to sound natural even though her change of voice was throwing her off. "I'd like you to meet Jules." Amara extended a hand for Tala to shake. "I've been staying with her for the last week."

"It's very nice to meet you," Tala said sincerely. "I was hoping you'd be interested in keeping my friend company at the ball tonight. I hope I didn't assume to much?" Tala said as he led the two girls to the awaiting limo.

"Not at all," Amara replied, smiling inside. "I'd be honored.

The drive to the Hiwatari mansion was short and by the time they were stopping at the front door, Amara's heart was pounding against her chest. A footman opened the door and Amara climbed out of the car as gracefully as she could considering she wasn't use to wearing dresses and high heels.

"Welcome ladies to the Hiwatari residence," Tala smirked offering his arms to both girls.

"It's quite the house," Amara chuckled, allowing Tala to lead her and Jules up the carpeted walkway to the door.

"And it's quite the little turn out for Kai's little announcement," Tala commented sarcastically. There were at least two or three hundred people milling around the entrance and ballroom. Everyone was wearing a mask, even the waiters and other servants.

"What kind of announcement is he making?" Amara asked, her eyes busy scanning the room for any sign of Kai.

"Can't say really," Tala answered thoughtfully. "He said he couldn't tell anyone about it until tonight."

"Huh," Amara replied absentmindedly her eyes locked on a tall slate haired figure on the other side of the ballroom talking with a disgruntled looking old man. "I'm going to find the powder room. I'll see you guys in a minute." Amara slipped her arm from Tala's and wandered in the opposite direction not waiting for an answer from either of her companions.

"I guess I'll introduce her to Kai later," Tala shrugged.

"There's plenty of time for that," Jules answered.

"Well hello there mister guest of honor," Tala dropped Jules' arm and walked over to greet his friend. Kai was dressed in a black suit similar to Tala's but his shirt was black and his tie was silver, matching his eyes, which were the only thing you could see since his face was covered with a silver eye mask.

"Well don't you clean up well," Kai joked poking his friend's tailored suit.

"Can't say the same for you though," Tala said, his expression serious. "Couldn't you have at least done something with your hair?" Tala flicked a piece of Kai's silver blue hair. Kai glared at Tala.

"You are so weird sometimes you know that," Kai rolled his eyes as Tala burst out laughing.

"I know but I just love that look of disgust you get every time I do." The two friends laughed together while Jules stood and watched.

"Well just for that I'm going to steal Edie away for a dance," Kai grabbed Jules' hand and pulled her out onto the dance floor away from Tala.

"You look beautiful this evening," Kai commented, pulling Jules close to him for the waltz style dance.

"Thank you." Jules felt herself blushing under his keen gaze.

"So how long are you staying with us?" Kai asked politely, leading them around the other dancing couples with ease.

"As long as Jules will let me stay," Jules said. It was hard to not stumble over her own name.

"Where is your friend? Tala said you were going to bring her."

"She's here somewhere," she replied off hand.

"So you're from Alberta you said?"

"Yes, have you been there?" Jules added the question to keep the subject off herself as much as she could. She didn't want to slip up and ruin Amara's plan.

"No actually I haven't but…" Kai's voice trailed off. His eyes were on something else. Jules could see it in his eyes, he was looking at Amara.

Amara entered the ballroom after wandering around the halls for about five minutes or so. The sound of the band playing a waltz had drawn her attention back to the ballroom. She spotted Tala by the buffet table talking to an older man but her eyes stopped on her friend and her silver haired dancing partner. Amara tried her best not to stare at the couple but her eyes wanted their fill of him. Suddenly she realized that he was staring at her as well. Her heart, which she had just calmed, began to beat frantically against her ribs.

Part of her wanted him to turn back to Jules and ignore the fact that he thought he was seeing her. But the stronger feeling was for him to come running up to her.

Kai watched the red head turn and rush from the room. Without thinking about it he dropped his hold on Jules and ran after the mysterious red head. After pushing his way through the crowd he made it out to the abandoned entryway and looked frantically down the two hallways. There was a retreating shadow walking in a hurry down the hallway to his right and Kai followed it.

Amara could hear the footsteps behind her. She knew it couldn't have been anyone else. So when a hand reached out and captured hers, she turned and kissed him full on the mouth without a word.

Her lips were warm and sweet. They melted perfectly to his in a mold that felt familiar. The kiss confirmed it. She had come and he had found her.

Well I just want to apologize again….I'm SO sorry about the long wait. I'll be better next time. There's just so much going on right now and like I said before I lost the computer to my brother's uncapable hands. (actually he's really good with computers it just he didn't ask me before he deleted all my stuff forever) I hope you enjoyed this chapter and I'll try to update soon. Thank you for reading and please review I love to hear from you.

Until next time (which will hopefully be sooner than this time)
