Chapter 6: Never Learn

Amara was frozen to the spot.  She couldn't move, she was too stunned and Kai had her pinned securely against the wall. Finally she found her senses and managed to push him back gently. Kai was reluctant to let her lips go but he allowed her to come up for air.

"Oh Kai," Amara sighed, looking down at her hands, which were still resting on his chest. His heartbeat quickened under her touch. But his silence unnerved her, causing her eyes too flick upward to his face.

"I'm so sorry miss," Kai apologized. Amara eyed him curiously. She wasn't too sure why he was apologizing.

"Kai what are you talking about?" Amara could see the embarrassment in his eyes. He removed her hands from his chest and gave her a curt bow.

"I thought you were someone else." He turned to leave. Amara was now even more stunned now then she was when he kissed her.

Then it hit her. Her voice. She sounded Russian instead of Canadian so he thought he had the wrong girl and he still couldn't see her face since she had not removed her mask.

"Wait!" Amara screamed ripping the lace choker off her neck. "Kai wait!" At the sound of her normal voice Kai turned back to face her.

"It is you," he breathed, pulling her to him. "It felt too right, I couldn't believe I was wrong. What was with the voice anyway?"

"It's a long story," Amara sighed, relishing his touch.

"You can tell me later," Kai smirked and leaned down to kiss her again. But Amara stopped him inches from her face.

         "Please don't."

"Why not?" Kai asked in disbelief. "You're gonna deny me after not being able to touch you for six months."

"Who's fault was that eh?" Amara replied bitterly. "I'm not the one that left remember?" Amara poked him in the chest to emphasize her point. Kai grabbed her hand and held it in his.

"Do you think I wanted to leave?" With his other hand he tilted her chin so she had to look him in the eye.

"I don't know, it's hard to say since you kinda left me and everyone in the dark about it," she answered him in an icy tone but he could see the pain in her eyes. "We all had to adjust to life without you around."

"What about you? How did you adjust?"

"It wasn't very hard." Her sapphire eyes bore into his silver ones, making the pain in her eyes even more evident. "Everyone I love leaves me at some point so I guess it was just a matter of time before you disappeared too."

"That's bullshit and you know it!" Kai snapped, pulling her closer and dropping his hold on her chin. "I told you I would never leave willingly."

"Then why? Why did you leave?" The anguish in her voice tore at his heart. He wanted to hold her and kiss it all away but he knew that wasn't what she wanted right now.

         "My grandfather," he replied.

"But why? Why would he take you away from your team and your friends?" Amara stared up at him, somewhat astonished but he wasn't looking her in the eye anymore.

Kai's eyes couldn't help but drift over her. She was making this very hard for him. Her lips looked too inviting and he loved the way her dress matched her eyes and hugged her curves perfectly. It would probably have been easier for him to explain himself if she hadn't have looked so detectible but of course to him she would look good in a hoody and sweats.

"Kai? Are you gonna answer me here or am I talking to myself?" Amara had taken a step back from him and had her hands on her hips, watching him curiously.

"I think it's my turn to ask you something," Kai paused and she nodded for him to continue. " If you don't want this…" Kai pulled her back to him and kissed her quick and hard. "What do you want?" He willingly let her get away from him and awaited her answer.

Amara's hand flew to her bruised lips and stared at him with wide eyes for a few seconds before regaining her composure. "I want answers."

         "That's it?"

"Yes," Amara replied flatly. "I just want to know why you left. I've gotten use to being without you and I'm not going to sit around and get my heart broken again."

"So all you want is for me to answer your questions and then you'll go back to BC?" Amara nodded, not meeting his eyes. "Then forget it." Amara's head snapped up. Kai smiled and then turned to walk back down the hallway in the direction of the ballroom.

"What do you mean forget it?" Amara questioned following him.

"What I mean is if telling you the truth is going to take you away from me again then I'm not going to tell you anything," He walked backwards so he could face her and get her full reaction. She stopped suddenly. Her jaw dropped and she gaped at him.

"Kai Hiwatari, why must you be so childish?" She snapped after him.

"I'm not going to lose you yet," he called to her over his shoulder. At the end of the hallway he stopped and looked at her. "My grandfather is the selfish bastard that made me leave you so please take your anger out on him and for now come and dance with me like every other snobby bitch in there wants to."

Kai waited patiently as she stared at him with a scrutinizing stare. If he knew her like he thought he did, she was sure to give in soon. Without a word she walked over to him and took his arm so he could escort her back into the ballroom.

"Wait," Kai turned to face her, stopping just in front of the doors to the ballroom. "I need to talk to my grandfather…alone. Could you wait out here for just a minute?"

"Trying to get rid of me already Hiwatari?" Amara sneered.

"You wish, I'm never leaving you again," Kai answered sincerely, kissing her gently. "One sec." With that he disappeared through the ballroom doors leaving her alone in the abandoned lobby. Amara sighed and stared at the closed oak doors.

"My grandson never learns," a cold voice tisked from behind her. Amara twirled around to meet the cold eyes of Voltaire. "Letting you come here was not very wise."

"Can I help you?" Amara stared at the old man in disbelief.

"I was pretty sure that by now he had accepted the inevitable and was letting you go. But no you're here," Voltaire said, glaring at her. "I was sure after he told you about the betrothal that you'd give up, persistent little gold digger aren't you?"

         "Whaaaa…" Amara gaped at him.

"I'm going to assume from you reaction that my grandson neglected to mention to you that he has a fiancé."

"Must have slipped his mind," Amara snapped, matching Voltaire's bitter tone. "And I am not a gold digger."

"Of course not," Voltaire agreed in a patronizingly sweet voice. "All those fan girls are chasing after him because he has a really great personality not a country and a kings fortune." Again Amara's mouth fell open in shock. Kai had mentioned none of this to her before. "My, my, my, you know nothing about him do you?"

"I know enough to know that you're a pompous bastard who should leave his grandson the hell alone!"

"You have a smart mouth for a fish out of water." He replied, grabbing her arm and pulling her to him in a death grip. Amara winced with the pressure of his hand. "You will not get in the way of my grandson getting what he deserves."

"What you deserve you mean," Amara hissed in his face. Voltaire's grip tightened on her arm.

"You will leave willingly or I will make you leave for good."

"So you wish to kill me do you?"

"You talk too much for your own good, my dear," Voltaire released her, throwing her hard to the ground. "You have two days to end things for good with my grandson and be out of Russia."

"And if I refuse?" Amara asked defiantly, glaring up at him from her place on the floor.

"Well I need him so I suppose you will have to be taken care of," Voltaire gave her an unsettling smile. "Two days."

Amara watched in disgust as he opened the large oak doors and slipped into the ballroom. Amara stayed on the floor and buried her face in her hands. Why hadn't Kai told her about the betrothal and that he was as rich as a king, owning a country? Yeah she knew he was rich but not THAT rich.

Amara picked herself up off the floor and entered the ballroom to find Jules and get out of there. It wasn't hard to pick out her friend and Tala, even with their mask-covered faces. Tala's fire red hair was unmistakable.

"Jules we need to go…now," Amara grabbed her friend's arm, breaking up her and Tala.

"Ams? What's wrong?" Jules could tell something was wrong but Amara's expression made it hard to decipher what.

"I'll tell you later…let's just go…now!" Amara had made eye contact with Kai across the crowded floor. In a matter of minutes he would be at her side and she didn't really think she could deal with that.

Jules nodded and followed Amara hastily out of the room. Tala, who had stood back in silence and watched the confusing exchange, followed.

"I'd like to know what's going on?" Tala called after them, managing to catch up to Jules and turning her to face him. "I thought you were Edie and she was Jules…and who the heck is Amara?"

"Tala…" Jules sighed, staring at him, unsure what to say.

"We have to go," Amara said earnestly, tugging on her friend's arm. "Come to the house tomorrow…but don't let him come." Amara gestured to the person coming up behind Tala. He turned to see Kai running up to them. Tala nodded and watched the two girls reach the end of the driveway and disappear around the corner.

"Amara!" Kai yelled. "Amara wait!" She didn't stop running. Kai had seen something in her eyes when she was staring at him across the crowded dance floor. He could tell by her look that she wasn't going to stay and wait for him to come back.

"Why didn't you stop them?" Kai huffed, coming to stand beside his friend.

"I think you need to explain here dude," Tala said, still staring at the end of the driveway where the girls had been moments earlier. "And I don't care how long of a story it is."

"Stop!" Jules pulled Amara to a halt just after they were out of sight from the Hiwatari mansion. "I can't run in these damn stilettos." Jules leaned on a light post and removed the spiky heeled shoes.

"He has a fiancé!" Amara shrieked, beginning to pace on the sidewalk. "A fiancé and a kings fortune…he didn't tell me any of this. Instead I got to hear it from that bastard of a grandfather of his."

"Well did you ever ask him?" Jules asked calmly.

"Well no but he said that the past doesn't matter…of course that was before he walked out on everyone," Amara replied bitterly. "You don't seem too surprised about any of this…why?" Amara eyed her friend suspiciously. "And don't tell me I'm being paranoid because you are being way too passive about all of this."

"I already knew," Jules answered, avoiding her Amara's stare.

"How could you already know?" Amara stuttered in disbelief.

Jules removed the choker from around her neck and then looked Amara in the eye. "Because I'm his fiancé."
