Chapter 7: Plans
"You're his fiancé?" Amara repeated in disbelief. Jules nodded. "And you didn't think I should know this because?"
"I've only known about it for a few days," Jules admitted. "And I guess I thought if I told you then it was more likely to come true."
"You mean you don't want to marry Kai?"
"No, I don't even know the guy. It's an arranged marriage. Neither of us have much of a choice in the matter," Jules replied bitterly.
"But why you and him?" Amara asked anxiously, desperately wanting to understand the situation.
"It's an arrangement of convenience," Jules shook her head, letting out an exasperated sigh. "He needs to be married to get the inheritance and my parents think it's a great social opportunity considering how rich the Hiwatari's are."
"Well that would explain why he was forced to come back," Amara pinched the bridge of her nose. She could feel a headache coming. "So is there any way you can get out of it?"
"There's no way my parents would let me out of it," Jules replied sadly. "And can you imagine the wrath of Voltaire…that's just scary."
"I take it that's Kai's grandfather?"
"Yeah, the old bastard's only looking out for himself. He doesn't give a shit about Kai," Jules said bitterly. "My parents think it's a great honor for me to even be considered to be the bride of a Hiwatari."
"You're not going to go through with it are you?"
"For both our sakes and his I sure want to get out of it but I don't know how. You're the mastermind, think!" Jules watched Amara pace back and forth across the sidewalk in front of her. She could tell the other girl was thinking hard. Amara wasn't one to give up easily when it was something or someone she cared about.
"Well first I think we need to explain things to Tala. Poor guy is really in the dark about all this," Amara said after a few minutes of silence. "But that's taken care of, he's coming to your house tomorrow."
"You don't think Kai will explain?" Jules questioned.
"Kai doesn't know why we were pretending to be different people but he can tell him who I am." Amara replied still pacing.
"Tala's gonna hate me now," Jules whimpered, which gained a stare of shock from Amara. She stopped her pacing and stared at her friend.
"Since when do you care what Tala Valkov thinks?" Jules looked down and fiddled nervously with the strap of her shoe. "You like Tala!" Amara's mouth fell open slightly. "You totally like Tala."
"Yes!" Jules broke in. "Would you stop repeating yourself. I like Tala." Amara sat down on the curb beside Jules, her mouth still gaping. "That would be another reason why I don't want to marry Kai."
"Does Tala know you like him?" Amara managed to ask still a little stunned.
"No, actually tonight was the first time I actually talked to him," Jules blushed.
"What!?!? How is that possible?"
"Well, I'm not nearly as gutsy as you and I could never talk to him at any of the Beyblade matches. Not to mention he always had groups of fangirls around him," Jules added bitterly. "But he was just so cute and I kinda fell for the guy that I saw not really knowing what he was like." Her eyes got a little spacey as she continued. "And then tonight my dream came true. I had Tala's full attention. The only problem was he thought I was you. So now when he finds out he's gonna hate me."
"So you've never talked to Tala before?"
"Didn't I say that already?" Jules rolled her eyes.
"This is perfect then," Amara exclaimed jumping up and pulling Jules up with her. "You like him so you can marry him and I'll marry Kai."
"Right because everyone's going to agree with that easily," Jules drawled in disbelief. "You did understand that I'm suppose to marry Kai and Tala doesn't even like me. Your plan is easier said then done."
"Okay, okay so maybe not marry but I'm sure we can convince Tala against you marrying Kai and Kai doesn't want to marry you anyway," Amara concluded happily.
"Well now that you have things worked out can we please get back to my house? My head hurts and I think I'm gonna need lots of sleep if Tala is coming for a visit tomorrow," Jules started walking in the direction of her street. Amara caught up and linked arms with her friend.
"Don't worry Jules it will all work out in the end," Amara smiled. "I hope."
"So you didn't meet any special girls in Canada, so then who the hell was that?" Tala gestured in the direction of where Amara and Jules had run off in.
"Fine so I met a very special girl while I was there but we didn't leave on very good terms," Kai grumbled, kicking a rock on the ground in front of him. He didn't look at Tala.
"Well it couldn't have been that bad if she came all the way here to see you," Tala sneered. Kai's relaxed attitude towards what had just happened was starting to get on his nerves.
"I was forced to leave by my grandfather, she didn't know where I was until a few days ago and I didn't tell her. She read an email that I sent one of my teammates and came here without telling anyone. It's dangerous for her to be here," Kai said.
"Does she know that?"
"I didn't really get a chance to tell her…" Tala noticed Kai's cheeks redden slightly and he was scratching his head nervously.
"Too busy getting reacquainted?" Tala smirked, jabbing Kai in the ribs. Kai scowled but then returned Tala's smirk.
"Little jealous eh, Valkov?"
"Not in the slightest," Tala grinned. "I had a lovely girl to dance with. She was friends with your little Canadian spitfire but it seems that I got dooped. They were pretending to be other people or something."
"You're right. When Amara first spoke she had a Russian accent," Kai said, remembering his own embarrassment. "I thought I had the wrong girl at first."
"Yeah well your girl called the girl that I thought was Edie, Jules. I don't really know who I was dancing with now," Tala shrugged.
"Did you say Jules?" Kai asked.
"Yeah but I thought her name was Edie." Tala watched his friend's expression change to something that resembled something between shock and utter horror.
"Did they say anything else to you before they took off?" Kai gulped, regaining his composure slightly.
"I'm suppose to meet them tomorrow," Tala replied. "But you weren't suppose to know that." Tala added. "Who is Jules to you?"
"My fiancé," Kai said almost sadly. He did manage to smile when Tala's jaw dropped in surprise.
"You're getting married? Since when?"
"Since my grandfather dragged me back to this god forsaken country," Kai replied bitterly.
"She doesn't know does she?"
"Amara? She didn't but I have a feeling she does now," Kai sighed.
"I have a feeling she's going to be strongly against you marrying her friend."
"Oh don't I know it but there's no way my grandfather will let her get in the way. If he feels she's threatening, he'll kill her," Kai said. He could feel the anger towards his grandfather rising. "That's why I didn't want her to know where I was. I'd rather live without her then see her dead."
"Then I suggest you keep that gold digging slut away from you," Kai recognized the cold voice of his grandfather behind him. Kai turned to meet his cold gray eyes. Tala took a step back, not wanting to get in the way but if Kai needed him he would be right there.
"Don't you dare call her that. She knows nothing of the money," Kai spat.
"Well then slut will have to do," Voltaire grinned maliciously, daring Kai to defy him again. "Now get in the house boy, I've had enough trouble trying to apologize for your disappearance. People want to congratulate you on your engagement." Kai cast a glare at his grandfather then turned obediently back to the house. Knowing better then to try and talk to Kai again, Tala turned and made his way to the street away from the house.
There were still so many things that Tala felt were unanswered but he hoped that when he saw the girls the next day that they would be a little more compliant.
